Regardless of the trumpeter having a very bad day (I'm glad I wasn't in his/her shoes), this is an astounding composition! Music written this well can withstand anything musicians do to it and still sound fantastic! I've heard the ELP adaptation of this piece far more often than the original, and I'm always moved by the original. (Ok, both really.) Copeland had such instinct when it came to putting what notes where. And what a percussion score! Focus on the negative if you want. It's your loss.
They need to work on staying together. I counted two-three times that they didn't stay together. also they need to warm up as coryrr said. I think the timpani might have a little fine tuning to do but it's not noticeable unless he hits really hard. they were playing pretty fast too.
Finally, @xptwillie Copeland’s epic masterpiece “Fanfare for the Common Man” was composed for Brass Choir – 4 French Horns, 3 Trumpets, tuba, timpani, bass drum, and tamtam. I am a Choral/Orchestral Conductor in Phoenix. I conduct both Professional ensembles and Armature as well. I am fortunate to have the finest musicians in the area. The ensembles are highly desired world-wide, known for their flexibility and responsiveness, having performed across Europe to capacity audiences in the most significant Venues. 2008/09 performing with Orquesta San Jeronimo in Madrid, Spain and with international recording artists such as Alexander Acha, Filippa Giordano & others.

This appears to be a rather small orchestra. This piece is better done with a larger wind section/symphony, additional French horns and trumpets. But they do a good job, no reason to be upset with their effort. It's a great piece of music and they do it justice.
It's too bad that some people's vocabulary is so limited that they can only use foul language to express themselves. You'd think they'd be ashamed to do it, but I guess it makes them feel big. In fact, it shows how little they are.
@karatefoxes - I know everybody can make mistakes, but when you're as exposed as trumpets are, I feel you should feel some responsibility to play well. I'm a euphist, and I'd die to have some of the great melodies that high brass gets - and I'd make damn sure I hit those high notes!
A very difficult work to conduct. Requires lots of rehearsal, which this Mexican orchestra obviously did not have. Yes, many wrong notes, particularly in the trumpets. Looks easy on paper, but it is anything but.
I wish Aaron Copland would have created a new tune for the USA National Anthem with a sense of this piece or perhaps Igor Stravinsky with a sense of the Firebird Finale......
IHSSA (Iowa High School Speech Association) uses this for the opening and closing ceremonies of the All-State festival, complete with a processional of banners....so basically it feels more like we're in Knight's Tale or something rather than a theatre competition! I got to carry a banner my last year and omg, this song makes every step epic! :D
When people talk about classical music everyone forgets American composers. Copland's music to me is the personification of classical American music!
@kyletop1 Lame. Trumpets are the ones that make the music. But I agree it kind of messes it up when someone doesn't practice hitting the right notes... :P
...disappointing. Bad attacks all over the place. intonation is shaky a lot around the 2:30 area. If you guys are saying this is good sorry but... no offense... its not. Go listen to CSO or LSO or something and then tell me that im wrong for commenting on this performence... Just my opinion though. :)
I watched the first 3 minutes or so. I heard one chipped attack. I have a Masters Degree in trumpet performance and am a music teacher. I would say it's an excellent performance overall---and I can be very critical. So to those ripping the attacks, I think you need to relax. This isn't the LSO or NYP we're talking about here.
Not a bad recording, but you usually expect those kinds of flubby attacks from Horns, not Trumpets...(speaking as a horn player myself). The Horns were actually very good.
Nice intonation and nice overall sound but the so called "wrong notes" are just some very bad attacks at the beginning of the notes....someone missed their warm-up in the trumpet section...:)

i play trumpet in this song..the rythem are simple but confusing i say that the trumpets in this while a bit crackly at times are great with intunaion
I thought they were just practicing until the audience piped in at the end .Hard piece to orchestrate I know, but did seem a bit sloppy here and there. Hate to be negative
Im sorry to say that the percussion kind of ruined this song. I say so because I am a percussionist and I have played this song and its extremely messy perc wise and they could have done SO MUCH BETTER seeing as how they are professional.
I think the video was not well taken, I've hear the Orquesta Sinfónica de Xalapa in other occasions, and I most say, they play beautifully, I don't know why in this video play like that, maybe is not of Xalapa...
Well, I wasn't condoning that sort of performance. I admit, those trumpets were awful. I think I was just frustrated over the overwhelming amount of unconstructive negativity in the comments.
Take it easy on the trumpets. Unless you can play it better yourself, don't criticize. And if you can play it better, you should have the maturity and humility to respect their effort.
Gotta give credit where credit is due. So what there were a few cracks and what not. Still very well done in my opinion. Flamers should lurk more, and say less.
could you play this???? i didn't think so, so don't criticize unless you can play this, and if you can, be mature enough to respect the hard work that these muscians put into playing this.
I heard 3 trumpet cracks. 0:48, 1:06, and 3:15. They stick out in your mind because they're at the beginning and end of the song. I bet the trumpeter and the conductor wanted to crawl in a hole and die after that. Also, as a musician, I hate it when the crowd starts applauding too early. Don't applaud after solos unless it's jazz, and don't applaud until the conductor puts his hands down!
anyone remember chuck mangione at the Lake Placid winter olympics with his band placed all arond the grandstands and the sound coming from all diretions? wow.

lol my friend and I both play trumpet and we both can play that high in tune. it really doesn't go that high, probably up to c above the staff at most. these trumpets are just not that good, though it is a hard part becuase they are so exposed at the beginning. still, they should be playing a piece at their level.
this song is really cool! my professor played it in class and we had to write a short essay on it, relating to a book re read recently. :) it's awesome!!!

I think the video was not well taken, I've hear the Orquesta Sinfónica de Xalapa in other occasions, and I most say, they play beautifully, I don't know why in this video play like that, maybe is not of Xalapa...

no matter your skill level, i think it's ok to criticize if it's this bad... even if its one crack, that's still very unprofessional.

Second. Critics are master readers, not master writers.

Well, I wasn't condoning that sort of performance. I admit, those trumpets were awful. I think I was just frustrated over the overwhelming amount of unconstructive negativity in the comments.
whoatherejohnny 3 years ago
Take it easy on the trumpets. Unless you can play it better yourself, don't criticize. And if you can play it better, you should have the maturity and humility to respect their effort.

Being a brass player myself, i love the brass sound. The recording kind of ruins the effect because its on a video tape, but it still sounds amazing

Gotta give credit where credit is due. So what there were a few cracks and what not. Still very well done in my opinion. Flamers should lurk more, and say less.

What kind a "band" is this? God save us
genoa4ever 3 years ago
could you play this???? i didn't think so, so don't criticize unless you can play this, and if you can, be mature enough to respect the hard work that these muscians put into playing this.
candylvr07 2 years ago
I remain in my opinion, nothing more nothing less.

Hint: Don't play music that's to hard for your group, it makes you sound like shit.

I love this piece, even if the tuba part is easy as balls.

This is an insanely hard song to get right and I would love to hear you try to make it sound any better.
mammle 3 years ago
thank you mammle, I bet half the people here posting can't even play a trumpet, let alone play that high in tune.
myshilohmy 3 years ago
lol my friend and I both play trumpet and we both can play that high in tune. it really doesn't go that high, probably up to c above the staff at most. these trumpets are just not that good, though it is a hard part becuase they are so exposed at the beginning. still, they should be playing a piece at their level.

I like the ELP version better. This is way to slow for me.

this is a fanfare and so it must not be legato (that also doesn´t sound very good to me)

The trumpets gacked a tiny bit, but who cares. If you know anything about music, this is one of those simplistic songs, wih fricken HIGH notes!

this song is really cool! my professor played it in class and we had to write a short essay on it, relating to a book re read recently. :) it's awesome!!!
