Awesome idea! Saves trash, and moeny I'd spend on other germinating media. Money saved to help pay for the electric the florescent grow-lights will use until after first frost! Thanks!
I have a giant bag of TP rolls hanging on my doorknob in the restroom now :) I was thinking, wouldn't it be easier to fill them up with soil buy taking the roll and pressing it into the container of soil instead of trying to sprinkle or shovel it into the rolls?
This was soo Kool I always wanted to do this but never wanted to pay for those peat pots. I heard of newspaper as well but I am too lazy to make them into pots. Who knew! paper toilet rolls I have tons of these! Thanks Garden girl!
@seoulsistah53 ... Home Depot carry's a product called Hypergrow, a coconut coir product, that expands to 2 1/2 cubic ft.. This is a renewable resource replacement for peat moss. Normally you mix this with vermiculite (or perlite) and potting soil or compost.
Loving the toilet paper roll starters. I've used them to hold Jiffy Pellets up while germinating but never thought to just fill them with coco or soil. I love growing with coco coir. Such an easy medium to use. I loved that I didn't have issues with pH growing with it. For about $3 a brick you can't beat it!
Nice idea. I love this !!! So much warmth and love. Im happy you are teaching your daughter..I plan to take my grandson to jamaica to teach him chicken raising and gardening.
When I started growing pepper seeds in July 09, I bought into the "Starter Seed Kits". Now I start them in 4" pots in Miracle Grow in a small greenhouse. 10 out of 10 sprout and are healthy. I have 10 Trinidad Scorions to prove it. MaxiCrop Seaweed, and superThrive in the right amounts are the key.
Love the coir brick. Also that home made seed tape is saving my life! And yes, garden gnomes and clowns. Terrifying. Did you know there's a movie featuring garden gnomes. RUN!
@plalelal "Coco brick" is a product made from coconut husks. The husk is beaten with mallets, made to rot a bit in standing water, and shredded before being compressed into bricks for ease of transport. The stringy part of the husk is known as "coir" (pron. "choir"). VERY useful material in tropical regions (especially as rope material) and, on its own, makes a great "soil" for germinating seeds.
Years ago, I used the same method to grow my weed seeds. it was cool! Then, when the plants were ready to go into the bigger pots, I would gently break the bottoms of the rolls so that the roots could splay out. A recommended way of doing things!
Dirty work.Take some spoon maybe...I am doing same stuff with acacia seeds with idea to transfer it into the ground after sprouting together with the roll..
I can definitely say I would've never thought to use paper rolls to start seeds.
Cool idea.
Thanks again.

I've tried this before, but the TP rolls always get moldy and it ruins my seedlings XD Do you have any tips?

That's hilarious, I've never seen anyone else do this with TP rolls, but I do it too. They do start to dissolve pretty easily though.

So you saved money on peat pots and then spent it on cocoa bricks instead of using homemade compost ;-)-
