Update: Punch this into a search - Flathead Meltdown 21 stud grudge match - You will see me in Old Rusty beating my pal Gavin in his 32 truck - both running old 21stud flatties.
He ran a 20 I ran a 18. i later squeaked a high 17.. Not bad for a 21stud on a single carb through a 3 speed and banjo axle.
Pull the plugs and fill cyls with ATF,let it sit for a day, spin it with no plugs, fire it up. No kidding it works done it a hundred times (buy and sell old cars)
mart that is truly a beautiful car! and what a pritty drive on that ol road! thanks for sharing with the world. i dream about having one of my own someday.. if my days will last long enough,
Thanks for all the comments fellas. The car is now running a new built french flatty with a 4" stroke crank. It also has a newly rebuilt 39 box. It's running great, except for a bit too much blowby. I'll be pulling the pistons and rings to rehone the bores. I ran 17.03 at the Nostalgia Drags on my second run, which I was pleased with.
It's not a biggie. The wrist pin is offset slightly to one side to reduce noise when cold. One of mine is in backwards so it's a littlle noisy at startup. I always baby it when cold so I don't worry about it.
the engine had been running well for a long time before I noticed the odd piston, so I left it alone.
Love this vid. From the water on the engine & hand cranking it, to the switch for the pump - letting it heat up to evap the moisture, then the clanky run dow the road... Classic home video. Nice!
This guy that owns this car is not too bright .starting it up with a piston in backwards, doing not even checking the oil or the engine after it has been sitting for so long,I would strangle this idiot if I was there the english moron has got his head too far up his ass,I had a 49 flathead ford and I would never run the engine like that without doing maintenance on it
wouldnt mind having one for myself, of course I Have to give it a bit more kick then a flat-head can give. Hopfully you get a fair bit of money to rebuild and correct The ticking, were it me IT would drive me insane.
You can get a fair bit of punch out of those flat heads if you build them right. My friend's Dad built and raced them his whole life, and he was getting 350-400 hp out of them. It's hard to believe, but i have no reason at all to doubt him, and have even seen his work.
Mart, nice video if you still have the car, can you give us a video going through gears?
