The whole projext is very promising as all humans interpert the world through all their senses, then linking them to certain feelings and emotions.
However, In the effort to create a humanoid that people will feel familiar with, you have entered deep inside the uncanny valley as first observed by Masahiro Morι, negating all usefulness since very few people would feel connected and trust such a being.
Before you making a machine that picks up on our emotions we need to figure out how humans share emotions. One may look into the electromagnetic field and explore the communication happening there. This may make robots experts at telling feelings because of superior sensors.
While not wishing to to disparage his work, i for one do not want a computer to try to read my emotions and reflect them, because i'll know its all fake. I want it to perform it's task correctly, or account for why it has failed. To pretend to empathise with me is infantilising. Perhaps satnav is the wrong application for this research, it may find a better home in other applications, none of which i can think of yet.
I wonder about what kind of values (human, ethical, social and technical ones) is involved in this research, and how would we react to the introduction of such a inovation in our personal lives.
I see everyone is very keen to give advice to the developers - hey, if you've got so many great ideas, why aren't you doing it yourself, instead of being armchair critics?

Amazing project. I doubt anybody would need a plastic doll in the car.
I'm curious how did you teach computer to recognize your facial expressions.
Also did you use supervised machine learning techniques? The weak point of this approach is it can be only applied to people that can persuasively express their emotions in the training phase
I find your work to be very interesting. However, I doubt that you actually need to have a creepy plastic head as road trip companion. You should consider projecting a non-distracting hologram over your windshield.
That aside, I would like to have more information about the telecommunications aspect of your devices (from sensors to actuators). Are you using wires? Are you planning to go wireless? Please, provide me (Private Message) with a link to some material. Thank you.
Why build all these robotic prototypes? Wouldn't it be more sensible to use the software face in your GPS simulation? At that point you're not constrained with mechanical design. I mean the study isn't about trying to develop a mechanical facial simulator.
I wouldn't personally like to interact with tools at such obscure levels; I sense a tide of frustrating misunderstandings there might possibly be. The voice/tone sensors would be useful though, particularly in emergency situations when people calling out for help.
Did the improved navigation result from reading emotions or simply understanding speech: "I think I'll go straight?" What difference did it make if he was angry, sad or ebullient when he said it?
It's a great idea Mr Robinson ! If you ever have difficulties funding your research, you can commercialise human size dolls "who" can say « yes » and mean it !
Obviously I know this is in its early stages, but one of the things that could be misinterpreted by the computer about a persons emotional response is anger. Unlike your example where you start waving your arms around more and generally start being louder. My beginning early signs are when I start talking quieter my voice lowers and gets deeper I do less hand gestures as this is all a subconscious thing that I do to try and stop myself saying something really nasty to the other person.
fully interactive computer! wow!
