Always did love this stuff. It was such great music it didn't need a whole freaking opera to support it, like they need nowadays. A great voice, a guitar, some bass, a bit of drum and then there's magic!!!!
Wow a 78 rpm Record was was upgraded to 45 round about 59. If you would have dropped one of those graphite slabs it was goodbye because they were heavy and would definitely break. They really partied off of this type of stuff in the 50's, this was good stuff. This is the roots of rock & roll and much more. Amazingly they only had a few record labels then like Vee Jay, Chess, Atlantic and later King.
23, this stuff was way before my time, but i love this old stuff. My pops was playing this in his car and the song was going in my head the whole drive til now. Oldies and Goldies. They just don't make music like they used to.
@buzzler745555 I am glad that you like old songs. Just because something is old doesn't make it not cool. This song also came out before I was born and I have loved it all my life. You must have a great ear for music I am glad that this fine Artist can give you a present of her talent, even today. Lavern was a great woman, she still keeps giving, What she leaves behind is a wonderful good feeling, I am glad that as young as you are that you appreciate it, and I know she would to.
When LaVern was flying to Australia, she took out flight insurance at the airport and sent it to Gibbs with a note: "You need this more than I do because if anything happens to me, you're out of business."
My great niece is just five and she absolutely loves this song. Every time I watch her I have to play this song for her. She also likes "Numbers Boogie" by Sugar Chile Robinson. Great post!!
I m a lucky so and so to hear this song forever on U Tube. Lavern was the greatest! Sometimes there is no way to improve on what came before you. That is a mark of a true Artiste.
@pjgumby Yeah, you're probably right...but I love this song and have loved it all my life...wouldn't have visited it here and offered my smart alek comment if that wasn't the case.
@joseph60us sorry if I mistook your remark, I thought you were critical of this fine Artist. But now that I knew you were not, I have to say your remark was really funny and I did find a chuckle in that. You really are very funny, and I do appreciate good humor, you are very witty.
@pjgumby Now that you mention it, someone really does play a mean cow bell!LOL. You know I never noticed that before! You are funny!!! Be my friend! I need more funny friends in my life.
I love you Lavern, you didn't get the rewards you should have gotten in your life, but then, who does? But you were so special, I know it's crazy , I didn't know you, but I miss you. It's like I've known you before, but in another life. I still miss you and always will.
Glorious song! One of the best songs ever written i believe! The lyrics are sublime. I'm going to put her version/style as a clean split btw. blues and pop. She's got the blues sound but she definitely added the squeaky clean pop feel. Then of course Dorothy Collins takes it to pure pop cleaner than a brand new whistle. Then of course Elvis who sang but never recorded it infused his Rockabilly roots..um shall we say pure raunch? But beautiful fun raunch! God bless them all for the glorious music
Wow what a great find!! It's good to listen to these rare old gem. Lavern Baker had such a nice raspy voice, I love it. Thanks for posting this great old song so the entire world can enjoy. Adding to my 50's Playlist so others may find and enjoy.
can't help but to hear this one over and over again. Talent like this is rare, and she is a gem in the gravel!! We speak to you Lavern from the future generations, God said that if you are worthy, your children will rise up and calll you blessed. You are blessed Lavern!
It's strange, but when I hear this song, it's like I miss those days, though I wasn't even born then . Maybe it's a ghost of a former life, who knows.......
LaVern Baker was a tremendous talent, sadly however, her record company often saddled her with often poor material, as they seemed to promote her as a novelty act. At one point, even forcing on her a "boyfriend" named "Stumpy" (Who seemed to have walked out from a "minstrel" show), who sat on stage, looking bored, while she sang!
@brcr29 You are so right on, you have great taste and have a fine sense of Art. She really was a great Artist. Most of us are rare ducks, I'm afraid. Kids nowadays rarely have a clue of what went before them. It's sad that they missed out on all this great music. Lavern was really something in her day, and she still is .
I love this.
