I think John Sessions, the guy who plays Dr. Prunesquallor, is an absolute riot in this scene. All his little tics and gestures and reactions are beautifully timed and delivered.
Tehee, the look on Steerpikes' face when he first saw Irma XD
I imagined the doctor much thinner, Fuchsia more like a child and Steerpike a whole lot uglier, but still it captures a great deal of books atmosphere (though it seems much cleaner and lighter here) and Mrs Slagg and Irma were just perfect!
i read the books while i was in jail for a few weeks and this seems completely different from what i read- i had imagined a much more medieval setting- this seems more victorian-
Oh my..This came from TV many many years ago and I loved it because of the stimulating young man..ofcourse in those days I didn´t know he was Jonathan Rhys Meyers. This serie has been a distant memory in the back of my mind, thank you for posting these clips.
yeah me too, great character- at art school i drew him a lot! - hey i tracked down mervyn's son- his email is SebastianPeake@aol.dot com and is quite a friendly chap- i sent him my website: google 'stephen harrison artist'if ur interested-- long live gormenghast!
thanks for the info. I checked out your work and its very interesting. Very dark. But I like dark... maybe thats why I'm so fascinated with Gormenghast. They should really make a movie on the first two books. Mervyn Peake was good illustrator himself, but his literary genius painted a far greater picture than his pencils.
MeganPhntmGrl - good point. But Steerpike managed to be charming without good looks, thats what was so amazing about him. Mervyn Peake often mentioned that Fuschia fully recognized the lack of physical beauty in Steerpike, but was strangely attracted to him. He was all brain. But its hard to find an actor who can be charming and ugly at the same time, so they went with the easy route and casted a charming handsome man.

Steerpike is suppose to be high shouldered, pale, with a huge forehead. Very thin. Casting went commercial... fucked it up. Fuschia is uppose to be younger. Prunesquallor too fat. Irma looks perfect.
Irma does look perfect. But see, I have to say that as much as I loved me some ugly Steerpike in the book, it really doesn't affect the story adversely to make him attractive. If anything, it gives his manipulations another level- JRM!Steerpike is CLEARLY using his looks in some scenes to his manipulative advantage. It therefore works, in my opinion.
Damn this show rocked. I didn't read the book, but it's a damned fine movie. Yeah, steerpike is too damned good looking, and clever. No wonder he rose so far in rank.
Fushcia did die in the trilogy, so thats fair enough! And she was never particularly clever either, working from instinct more than anything. Her instincts, considering her first love was for a murderer, left something to be desired as well. However, she wasn't the inane bimbo portrayed in the film either.
I think the reason they portrayed Fuchsia as a insane bimbo, is they had to make people like Steerpike---the director had a thing for this character---and so the only way that could be done is at Fuchsia's expense. Notice how we almost feel sorry for him for him being "in love" with Fuchsia and wishing him to live. Few was suppose to be the sympathetic character we liked--NOT Steerpike lol
I know! They KILLED Fuchsia's character--and romanticized Steerpike! Ugh! I mean, he cared about her in a sense, but yes--his attempts to woo her were political.
And the chapter when he calls her fool and shoves her in the room with there meeting---they warped that way too much!
Surprising Rhys Meyers comes off as less "pretty" and more sturdy in The Tudors. Prunesquallor reminds me too much of myself earlier on in my career ;).
Woah! I'm a fan of the books, and though the books themselves are strange I was afraid that the TV show might be awkward and bad. But I'm surprised! The acting is great, only I imagined Dr. Prunesqualler as much jollier and hyperactive.
Steerpike is too pretty

Prunesquallor is great, but fuschia is profound in the book, not a bimbo

Great they turned Fuschia into a retard. She's eccentric and dramatic, not slow. *facepalm* Not AT ALL how I envisioned her.

Yes. He was being typecast in weaker pretty boy roles, so he decided to train and added 25lbs. of muscle to look more masculine. He's also older now.
