  • I never heard of 'Dan Hartman' until 2 minutes ago. Dan Hartman can suck it.

  • it's so funny how things come full circle....check out dan hartmans video for "instant replay"...sufficed to say it looks like hall and oats loaned him their band...u know g. e. smith and the saturday night live band...HA!!!

  • Dan sings it much better|

  • @sympathy3k21 I don't blame you for being an asshole.

  • @sympathy3k21 Then why are you cracking on him?

  • @sympathy3k21 shut the hell up...stop being so negative...they can sing whatevr songs they wanna sing 4 as long as they want to ... where r ur grammy's, platinum records... u just dont understand real raw music...azzzhole....

  • Where can I get the lyrics for this song since they are so different from Dan Hartman's version?

  • fucking horrible

  • @tedtug I like it better than the original for some reason.

  • @haze555ful to each his own

  • : @jimibassification - you need to do some research. Dan Hartman did indeed write the song "Free Ride" which was a hit by the Edgar Winter Group. And just in case you didn't know Dan Hartman was in the Edgar Winter Group. Dan is the lead singer on "Free Ride" and he also is playing that really catchy riff on the guitar.

  • He looks fantastic, as great as his voice!!!!

  • Where the fuck is Oates' MOUSTACHE !?!?!?

  • @domrct it got it's own solo gig.

  • @BemyTheLadysLover

PULL YOUR HEAD IN YOU DICKHEAD WHAT WOULD YOU KNOW

  • The lyrics are different from Dan Hartman's version from the movie. O_O

  • i alway thought they sang it..

  • WOW!! Equally Great with the original From Dan Hartman from the 80s

  • one day in Sears i heard this version . who would've thought elevator music could be so very, very lovely!

  • @msmaneater123 I bet that you didn't want to get out of there.

  • i like the song the way dan hartman sung it , but if hall and oates had made it like their other songs ,it woulda been a hit too, its when they get all dramatic and carried away they dont sound as good

  • After hearing this, Dan was right to do his own thing. All respect to Daryl but this wouldnt havebeen a hit the way this is sung here i dont believe.

  • Is that Baba Booey?

  • @bdaleypsu Thats exactly what I was thinking! LMAO

  • it sounds like they were making up the words as they went along

  • Hall & Oats are one of my favorite acts in music they are legendary for sure , But this version of the original song sung by Winston Ford fails miserably, thankfully they didnt record this version it wouldve never been a hit. Interesting version though but the melody and dragging arrangement is too sappy to work or work in that movie . They changed the song from an upbeat finger snappin' dance grove to a mid tempo boring ballad ZZzz Thumbs down on this version-Shes Gone is incredible however!

  • @InfinityNebula when you sing a song you are free to play with it as you please...however, i agree, lousy version..(i learn about dan hartman singin this about 3 months ago ,allwas though it was hall & oates!!!!)

  • Best live act I have ever seen.

  • dan hartman was a real talent- wrote also wrote the megahit "free ride"

daryl has such great taste in music

  • @dontkr You're an idiot. Dan Hartman didn't write Free Ride, Edgar Winter did.

  • @jimibassification wikipedia it. Dan Hartman did write it.. If I remember right, both he and Edgar sang it together on the album, Edgar in falsetto

  • @jimibassification He also co-wrote "Living in America" by James Brown from the Rocky 5 soundtrack

  • Interesting, I didn't know he wrote this song for Hall & Oates. I wonder what a real studio cover of this song would sound like.

  • The best of the best!

  • way to completely ruin a great song, Daryl. I'm sure Dan would appreciate you not even knowing the words.

  • @StarWarsAlabama if you know the story behind it. Daryl had changed the words when they recorded it back on the Our Kind of Soul CD. Daryl even says he changed the words so that it would sound better.

  • quite an intro..

  • RIP TBone.. love you Hall and Oates.. or as my mom would saying "hauling oats".. lol.. inside joke..

  • oates had the best back voice daryll ever had XD

  • Daryl has the most pitch perfect voice in this universe!!!!

  • By themselves they are half the show and that is exceptional . . . together they are Hall & Oates . . . they will forever be a duo even if they do not play together anymore . . . maybe some day they will realize what they are together

  • fantastic version of this song!!!!!!!!Too bad neither of them did a moonwalk...LOL :-)

  • If Hall & Oates could stay together long enough, they could record a studio version the way they would have back in the 80's. They keep breaking up, I've had tickets refunded twice to their concerts because they weren't together and touring anymore.

  • Outstanding, Simply!!!!

  • This is a very Hall and Oates song. Yeah, the Dan Hartman version is better, but... it's also a studio version... and this is live.... and many years later... Stuff wears out a little bit over time. HOWEVER: Darryl's voice has stayed pretty strong over time.

  • I can dream about you baby!!

  • Dan Hartman's version is far superior. Daryl recorded it from his memory in a shack in the bahamas. He has said, what he didn't remember, he made it up. That's why the lyrics aren't exactly the same.

AS for Everytime You Go Away, while Paul Young's studio version was better than theirs; H&O do a great version of the song live. There's a great live version on the 2002 release- Behind The Music Cd

  • Damn! That's golden right there!!!

  • Dan Hartman must have been rolling in his grave now, denying he ever got to know this guy!

  • Génial !

  • これは珍しい。

    一応Dan Hartmanのやつのカバーということになるんだろうか。

  • Beautiful I'm glad I listened ......awesome

  • This is a letdown. I agree it would probably sound better plugged in.

  • Might have sounded better in the studio, but even as a huge fan of Hall & Oates...I don't know if they could have done it as well as Dan Hartman did.

  • @bomb1977 This is a similar story to"Everytime You Go Away." This song, Dan Hartman writes the song, offers it to Hall/Oates, he turns it down, Hartman has a hit with a song that came out incredibly, "Everytime You Go Away": Hall writes the song, doesn't see it as a hit, Paul Young covers it and it becomes one of the greatest love songs of all time.

  • There's a girl I love but I can only dream about her - maybe that'll make it alright...

  • Hall and Oates are amazing....but I have no idea what Darryl is singing lyrics-wise. It sounds like he just made words up as he went. This one, while nice, does not even sniff the original by Dan!

  • @putt4dough21 - I agree. I like the way the music went on Dan's version. I think if H&O did it with the same type of music, then it would have went over. But we are talking 20 years ago, but different era.

  • like to see them to do this song full non acoustic.. it sounds ok this way but if was not acoustic I think it would be alot better.

  • Don't hate me for saying this but I like Hall and Oates version much better. They're just a legendary band.

  • the best musicians GET BETTER with time....... As a teen I played a gitah and sang, and NEVER got the responses I do now at 50 with standing ovations, autographs, newspaper writeups and fans from four nations. What sets H&O apart is first their SONGWRITING, if that sucks it matters not one OITA if you can sing or not, Darryl and John have had incredible songwriting chops since their beginning, get their Abandoned Luncheonette album, Along the Red Ledge, or anything early and be really amazed.

  • Dan Hartman wrote a few other songs..he wrote and sang INSTANT REPLAY.. He also wrote FREE RIDE for Edgar Winter Group. Hartman died of a brain tumor resulting from AIDS on March 22, 1994 in his home in Westport, Connecticut at the age of 43.

  • Better late than never and still awesome sweet!

  • Who remembers Dan Hartman? His song "I Can Dream About You" was intended for Hall & Oats to actually perform it. Since Hall & Oats had just finished their album, they did not record it. So Dan Hartman had to sing his song himself. It was a classic hit for him. Here's Hall & Oats singing it a very, very long time after.

  • when i first heard I Can Dream About You back in 84 i really thought it was Hall and Oates.

  • Yeah, Hartman did it better .... if you like over slickly produced 80's studio music. I prefer my music live as this. Sounds like it was impromptu as well. Makes it even better.

  • I'm glad Dan sang this song , Man H&O messed up this song!!!!! I'm A VERY BIG Hall & Oates FAN!!!! Dan Hartman's version is waaaaaay BETTER!!!!!

  • I love both versions both interpretations that's music for you don't compare the 2 each is unique and just damn good in it's way Peace

  • @sarahjeanluvsmusik Soming from a musical family, you said a mouthful there. I not only agree with you, but couldn't have worded it better. Thank-you for ones like yourself. Take care.

  • this is a real folk version Oh My Good is great

  • ugh, Dan's version is way better. sorry guys.

    5/5 for vid though.

  • I love this song so much... everytime I view this video I picture myself laying my hands on Daryl's face... like a sculptor would loving fondle fresh clay... that may sound strange but it's one of those unusual impulses I get, I want to reach out and touch people. I mean just imagine this, look at that nose and chin and those strong browbones... irresistible to an artist. I'd give him a fine anointing facial...

  • Daryl and John, my loves for life! No matter what they sing! One of my favorite 80's songs!

  • Safe Journey Tom x

  • I love both versions!!! Yeah i can imagine Daryl singing the original song. He would have killed it!!!

  • If Hall and Oats had recorded a studio version of this music, but EXACTLY as Dan Hartman's version (in other words, only changing the voices), it would be even better the the one recorded by Dan Hartman.

It is good hearing H & O singing this music but, the way they did, the original one is better.

  • they are the best. Love Daryl's house-Eli 'paperboy" Reed has a terrific soul voice/

  • I like this version...it doesn't sound so commercial - like the original.

  • The Guitars & Vox sound out of tune. What a surprise comming from these guys. Maybe CSN shoulda had a crack at this one. Thaey flat out don't give it the justice it deserves.

  • I totally agree - this is not a patch on the original -and a disgrace to Hartman's memory. What WORDS is Hall singing in the first verse? When he says he's 20 years late - he shoulda said 20 years BEHIND.

  • This version might have been an early draft of the song that Hartman showed them. Nice to hear this straight-fwd arrangement with slightly different lyrics. It helps keep this great song alive.

  • YIKES!

    What a rough mix.

  • They should've used more synths on this, dissapointing, nothing beats the originals anyways, but Hall and Oates still sound great

  • TrainmasterCurt

how much would you pay to have this in MP3 vercion? I can make removing it from the video with excellent quality,

  • buen tema

  • This is wicked on the album and I am so happy they finally did a cover of it, as it was meant for them in the first place. Well done boys, keep up the great work :)

  • Buen cover :)

  • With all due respect to Daryl and John...yikes. That was abysmal. That song truly belongs to Dan and he should thank god they didn't record it on an H &O record. When they "folked it up", they robbed it of it's new-aged motown feel.

  • Hall & Oates are my all time favorite band, but I have to agree with you.

  • I agree Kage, not really feelin this version either, but I think H & O just folked it up 4 this acoustic performance...I'm sure if they had recorded the song & it had been included on their album at the time(Big Bam Boom), it would've eneded up sounding just like the other songs on the album, prolly similar 2 METHOD OF MODERN LOVE or Out Of Touch.

  • Couldn't have said it better..they didn't even pay Dan the decency of singing the original words. Abysmal is correct.

  • This isn't bad but I agree it definitely isn't as good as Dan Hartman's version.

  • These guys can take any song and make it sound more soulful than even the original medium!

  • YOUTUBE is awesome, i have sat here and watched hall n oates age from the early 80's to this through all their work. amazing how ppl age and change, but this band still remains great.

  • thanks 4 this h&o RULE

  • WWE's Undertaker looks like Darryl Hall's lilttle brother.

  • dan heart man did it better but its nice of them to remember them thanks guys

  • holy jesus thats daryl!! what the freak happened? john doesnt look too hot either! wow perhaps they shud stay in the 80's!!!!! yah dan's version was much much better!!! love 80's music tho..hall and oates are the shiz tho..in their prime! got their record h2o good stuff!! love u guys!

  • I can answer your alarm..lol..we the fans tend to mentally stay in the past..believe it or not...Daryl is in his 60's..so I think he's holding up quite well esp that voice..

  • I'd love to see you twety some odd years later...

  • I love these guys, I love this song, but I have to agree with mervun... Hall gives Hartman major props then changes the lyrics. Or more likely, forgot them. That really does SUCK!!! I know they're stand up guys, but come on... That's just laziness. Sounds good though.

  • I agree, this is the only cover that H &O has done that I don't think is as good as the original. too different from the original..it lost something in the transition.

  • Daryl is GOD - give him anything - he'll sing it!

  • Daryl Hall can sing the phonebook and make it sound good

  • I second that is this not just raw, cold pressed talent or what? If these cats ever come to Nashville or somewhere within a four hour drive, "Yeah Im gone B there." These guys and Micahael McDonald, who sold out last time he came and I missed seeing him.

  • Wow Dan Hartman's version was so much better!

  • a perfect song. the glory years of Top 40 radio. bring it on. where were you then? where are you now?

  • That SUCKS!!!!!

  • They changed all the words!!!!

  • that is an acoustic solo sound i have yet to hear--i like it

  • Dreams = Survival

  • I love hearing a group of acoustic guitars with some good vocals - and Daryl Hall is one of the best! Love it, thanks for posting!

  • Simply wonderful these guys are the best.

  • Wonderful. So glad they've both sung it now. Dan ruled

  • Wow! I didn't know about this story! I thought that was specially made for Streets of Fire!

  • What a perfect song - perfectly played

  • Oh yeah, I can see why Dan Hartman thought this was a perfect song for Hall & Oates.

  • yeah......very very big *THX* 4 this video....and i can also dream^^...this music was actually and i was an 15 years girl =))

  • gee kone if you kep posting these vids I won't have to look for the dvd of the concert, this the way to watch darryl and john acuostic and doin' some old tunes,
