This model and the 635D have incredible S/N ratios and frequency respones. The GX series XTAL-Ferrite heads are virtually wear out proof.
When Audio Arts Recording was founded in the early 80s, I used a pair of these consumer grade machines in our mobile recording rig in leiu of more expensive 1/2 track recorders as back up machines because of their transparent clarity and gentle tape handling characteristics.
Made many live Blues and Jazz recordings from performances captured on the 635Ds.
Donna Fargo---what a lovely lady and talent she was back then---sounds like a good recorder/player-----can tapes or reels be bought anymore? I heard the manufacturers don't even make Reel to Reel tapes anymore
Hello, I have a GX 636, and the left channel does not work in playback. I know it's not the playback head. I am thinking it could be leaking capacitors in the amplifier circuit. Does any one have any ideas or suggestions otherwise?
These are truly great machines! I have the similar next model down (GX-635D) as part of my main audio system. Had it since it was new (mint) Glass Xtal Ferrite heads live forever and both way auto-reverse play / record with servo take-ups and direct servo capstan drive is hard to beat! These were some of the best machines on the market--I'm taking mine with me to the grave!!
I have the same machine with dust cover. This is MUCH more reliable machine than the 635D that it's based on. But, have you experienced any problems like distortion in one channel during record?
The tape playing was recorded by me, using this machine. I connected the audio in to my cable music output channels and recorded on all tracks on both sides. This tape is completely full of music and it's working great, both directions, record and playback.
The tape itself is single sided (i.e., the music is on one *side* of the tape -- the shiny side, IIRC). But there are four tracks; one for side A and one for side B. Some machines can play the B side without having to swap the reels. Very nice.

I used to own an AKAI X300 reel-to-reel with 15 ips speed.
With it I had also two Shure Unisphere 565 microphones

I thought R2R tape was single sided ... I was wrong!!!

Some are, some aren't. This one is one of the later models that does. There are also models that even thread themself. Technology!

You think they still make R2R machines and the reels?
EclipseWebJS 4 years ago
Tape is still being made (by a company that took over Ampex's R2R functions: Quantegy). As for the machines, no. They are not being made anymore :(
