THANKS BRO, awesome bulid. Jimmy "Rhino" . By the way what size barrel and length is that? The overal length i mean from beginning to end of battlecomp. I like the proportions, not like a dissipator end. Looking to build a similar black one but cannot locate the Daniel Defense barrel at Brownell's. Let me know bro and good vids.
@disorderindminor ...I used federal .223 bulk, Tula .223, Brown Bear .223 all FMJ 55gr. It short stroked the most with the Tula, and I had 1 round of federal that didn't fire due to no primer was in it...LOL
Daniel Defense barrels are known for having under sized gas ports in their barrels. I have read that some people have gone as far as using a 1/16" drill bit to increase the gas port. This is why I went with a yankee hill barrel over Daniel Defense.
@stebo211 - experiment with it. get an extra spring and cut of an inch of coil at a time and test it. you may have a really small OEM gas port hole. most of the pistol and milspec rifle kits are ported to run the good ammo. most of us never do. i just finished assembling a friends 7-1/2 " we opened the tiny port to 5/64. he has fired several hundred rounds through it without one single short stroke or failure.
maybe too heavy a buffer, gas port may no be sufficiently aligned, low pow ammo, spring too strong... in general AR platform needs more time and trouble tuning them when barrels are below 16 inches... you almost need to build them @ the range...
Hey man, check your buffer weight, and also try locking the bolt the the rear and store it that way for a week or so....the spring may be a bit to strong.
You are probably aware, but just incase you're not: enlarging the gas port should be the absolute last resort. Double check the gas block alignment like you said. What about the gas key on the carrier, are the bolts properly staked? Check for tightness there. Now that I'm seeing the video, I'm not sure you have a short stroking problem, If it is feeding then what is the problem? A midlength is going to be less harsh than a carbine.
One more thing. Was dwell time taken into account? You don't have lots of barrel in front of the gas block. My understanding is you need bigger passages in the gas block for guns with a short dwell time. Maybe call the manufacturer of the gas block & ask about that. Just my 2 cents worth. I do agree with you in that it is probably in the gas system. That's the only thing I have had to tinker with after swapping parts out or rebuilding something. Good luck! Great looking build by the way.
nice builds man one thing Ive learned about having the mid length gas tube is you should try swapping out buffers if its short stroking you may not have enough compression to move that heavy buffer correctly try using 5.56 and if you already are try swapping the buffers to a normal buffer it should run fine with a different buffer also see if your spring is in backward I swapped mine around and noticed I had it in backward and it ran fine after
It's highly unlikely the barrel is actually drilled wrong. I would check to make sure everything is aligned first. I would put that ring in there. The gas system is really finiky , they gotta be just right. Then I would check for something binding in the carrier and if it's still doing it I would make sure the buffer & spring are correct. Thats all I can think of that would cause a short stroke but I have only built stuff stock, never a full custom build so take that with a grain of salt.
It looks like it is hardly ejecting. I would look at the gas block and make sure everything is lined up correctly. You could also check the size of the gas port hole in the barrel and make sure it's in spec.
EU0335 spacer shim from armalites website might solve the problem or you can space it by sight. i think your right. those gas blocks are right on target. you need to make sure they space right or you'll cut off the gas. it sounds like a short stroke to me. you can always hack up a factory end cap and us it .
it could be the ammo. if its under powered it will short stroke. Your also using the H2 buffer. More weight in the buffer makes it harder for the gas to push back the BCG. If you have a Commercial H buffer try that. Its lighter which will allow that under powered gas to bush pack the lighter buffer. I would try that before I try drilling holes or messing with the gas block.
@datzitteezy also correct. Id also try a standard car buffer. with a middy gas system you really dont even need a H, and certainly not a H2 buffer IMHO
@datzitteezy ....I have another middy upper I use on this same lower with Zero issues, so I'm going that's it's gotta be the upper, since the other one works perfect.
I would try a lighter buffer.

you get it worked out? if not it could be gas port off of a fraction of an inch.

Check alignment of the gas tube to the gaskey to make sure it`s not binding :).Lovely looking rifle congats
thematrix248 2 months ago
make sure the gas block it correctly positioned over the barrel port. if its only hanging over half way, you can have that problem.

what do you mean by short stroking?
jeffxl12 2 months ago
@jeffxl12 .....the bolt is not being cycled fully to the rear to strip another round off the mag, so it's "short stroking"
fatboyR6 2 months ago
nice...
GlockNinja 2 months ago
On your carbine length system you have more gas blowback towards the bolt which is why it may be working better than your midlength.
