  • I enjoy your analysis!! Very interesting!:) ThU

    Thomas

  • very beautiful

  • What is a definite "plus" of this video are the serious comments. For instance, I was suspecting that this legendary dance was composed under tragic circumstances, however now I aware of the speculation that it was composed upon Bach's first wife's death.

    Excellent!

  • I love the way you explain everything to us, it is such a great way to learn. I am a teacher and follow your playing wherever I can.I tell my pupils to listen to you and watch your playing. My pupils are sdults only and they also love you

  • @louise6894 , thank you so much for the feedback!!! I'm very happy that you and your students find the videos informative! :)

  • Muito bom... :D

  • I love how you educate us all in a pretty amazing way! Thank you Anne!

  • Dear Ann, Bach's Chaconne is my favourite piece and I've listened to so many different versions. I came across your video today in my laboratory and was totally immersed! I closed my eyes and saw (or heard!) the "shadow" of Heifetz - whom I still think was the greatest instrumentalist of all time! You infused this piece of the deepest human emotions yet retained complete and utter clarity. I never had the chance to watch Heifetz plays live - I hope I can watch you play this live one day...

  • Dear Ann, I'm from Brazil and I love your songs. God bless you all.

  • Oh, this is just wonderful. :) You've done such a great job with this piece.

And you know, I'm really no expert, but I always thought that Bach meant "stream" in German.... not "baker." And I also always thought that a "ch" in German did have a slightly more guttural sound... or at least was pronounced NOT as a hard "k." Just saying. In any case, the way she pronounces "Bach" has no impact on her extraordinary playing, or our enjoyment of her extraordinary playing. Or it shouldn't.

  • Watching you play this was one of the most beautiful things I have seen, ever. Thank you for being who you are.

  • Spent the afternoon listening to you play and studying the piece. I am so glad that i finally found someone rolling the bow down when the melody is in the bass. There is no other way to play it in my opinion and you nail it. Great job.

  • thank you for the notes

  • Simplemente hermoso!!! Gracias por compartir. Admiro tu dedicación y disciplina. Dios te bendiga.

  • Angel is right. I love this piece, and you play it very well. You also pronounce his name just fine.

  • Your performance is quite nice.

Please pronounce his name correctly. Bach was not Slavic. It's German for baker.

    Koch = Coke

    Bach = Baak

There's no BackOfTheThroatGutteralLoogie at the end of his name.

    I love art...but artists?.....feh

  • @mayej i wonder who do u think u are? God? why dont shut up and enjoy one of the most beatiful performances in youtube instead of telling no-sense commentary about pronunciation of this AnnGel.....

  • Great heart-felt performance! Thank you for sharing!

  • never. mind. the phrasing is PERFECT. God bless you!

  • very fine playing. beautiful phrasing. brava!

  • Moving... That's the only word I can think of... I'm going to watch this again to read your notation, but I couldn't do anything but listen and be stirred the first time through. Once I get over the power of the composition, I'll be able to be properly blown away by your talent of interpreting such a masterpiece.

  • Once the music started I could not stop listening. I stopped everything I was doing and became trapped in a trance. This is truly the greatest playing I have heard, and at this moment I am speechless. It literally had me begging for more. I will not only subscribe but I will wait anxiously for future videos. Thank you for everything. You're a wonderful violinist and I do hope all your endeavors become a reality.

  • 22 people have not heard, much less the brain.

  • Perfect interpretation. Congratulations. And you're a sight.

  • I thought angels only played the trumpet,,, but now I know they play violin as well!!!

  • i love the way u play and explain the stuff n history associated with it ... there is nothing better than listening to someone playing and expressing emotions through music

  • Somehow I can't stop hearing you playing the violin, it's simply beautiful, but after watch another of your videos this time I can also apreciate to hear you speaking and that's beautiful to me too, thanks for sharing this, you're an angel

  • @AlbertAmparan , You're so sweet! :) Thank you!

  • Hello Ann

I have recently discovered your video music on UTube and want to thank you for sharing this work. You playing appear effortless and is a joy to watch.

  • You are wonderful, I love Bach and you

  • very very exceptionally !!! perfect for release and soul recover !

  • Dear Ann

I personally love your performance as much as your comments on pieces. They give us beginners a key to understand what music really means. I hope you keep on going with this great job. Thanks and greetings from Spain

  • What type of violin is that? I am interested in that sort of thing! Sounds amazing

  • I absolutely love Partita No. 2! I like this movement and the Sarabande the most though, I'm planning to snatch up the music soon and learn it on the side from my lesson works. Keep making wonderful videos :-)!

  • Dear Ann, you're amazing and personally I think that your playing is awesome,

Recently i started my studies as a violinist player and i would like you to give me an advice and I even wonder if there is a chance to be my teacher because I really want to becom a great violin player as you. I really hope that you have the chance to be my teacher.

  • @twist246 , I do teach, as well. Where are you from?

  • @Annfontanella I'm from Puebla, Mexico

  • @Annfontanella I'm from Puebla, Mexico and I hope that you can give me one class cuasie that would be perfect! (:

  • Violin musics are so great! I find it the coolest musical instrument to hear!

  • Wow u've recited the whole thing!!!!!!!

  • You are amazing. I hope one day to reach and conquer your tecnique... I know that I have a long road to go still... I have started just 5 months ago but I know that with constance, patience and discipline i will reach you jejeeje I like a lot your performance... let us know when you visit Buenos Aires, Argentina, (Piazzolla´s country) it would be really nice to hear you play in live.. hope you understand my English, im not used to this language ... mine is Spanish. I wish you good luck :D

  • Ann,

Thank you for your wonderful commentary during these videos. Your intonation is great!

  • very fine !

  • @raphberry She says "like spinach," not "Spanish."

  • will you marry me?

  • perfect as a flower

  • @IcarusDrowning88 i remember when i was 13 years old and exaggerated everything i said to sound like i knew what i was talking about, she's not as good as heifetz but this is far beyond "playing notes". also, very creepy that you keep commenting on videos of attractive female violinists to say "yawn nice eye candy" and "playing not so great but she is hot"

  • this is amazing!

  • Yeah but I can't even concentrate on the music because she's so freaking hot.

  • At first I missed the ambience and reverb of the "church" sound that I'm so used to hearing but it soon became unnecessary. That says a lot about the playing....nice interpretation. I wonder what is the history of the violin. Great sound overall.

  • No depth here... totally removed from the structure and balance of Szeryng's Chaconne or the tragedy in Heifetz's Chaconne... There is a difference between playing notes and making music.

  • Wow you really need lessons! -.- ahhaha jk sounds awesome-

  • could someone write me down what is she saying at the begining of the vid?

i whish i could understand her but my english is not good enough :|

    Thanks!!!

  • @MsDennify Heifetz actually played Bach a lot when he was going over to play for the troops in World War 2 (...) that maybe it's not the most entertaining thing to listen to, but it's very good for you, like Spanish :)

  • @raphberry

Spanish? Good for you? I speak spanish and I can assure you there is nothing good for you about it, but rather, it is incredibly pleasing to read, especially. If I want to read a classic, and I want to really get a feel for it, I'll read it in spanish. Conversely, if I want to understand a book, without reading too extensively, I'll pick it up in english.

  • @Acruz9301 i am just writing down what she said in the beginning of the video for someone who asked what it said. it's a quote by heifetz.

  • marry me hunney!!

  • Dear Ann, Thank you, great performance and I keep on coming to watch it again. One question: Why must of the young players do not pause after the first 5 notes? In your opinion, is it a mistake?

  • @fmarcos7 , Thank you for taking the time to write and thank for watching! I don't quite understand your question, but I'm guessing you are referring to the phrase length after the Dm (5th chord). I think a lot of us feel that it is not the end of the phrase (since the tune is on the mediant), but rather a mild resolution leading to the continuation of a longer phrase.... Does that make sense? :)

  • @Annfontanella ann i so need u to help me on my violin DD: i wish u came here in texas so u can help me!!

  • ann this true master peice to hear see musican who love music of legend who made music what is today like guys Johann Sebastian Bach, Mozart, Franz joseph haydn you made a justice with peice i love it .

and my favorites is james Honner wrote my heart will go on for celine dion keep up the hard work.

  • Wow u play amazingly good, even though I play guitar I like how this sounds in the violin...congrats :)

  • The music was beautiful!

I love the way you talked me through what was happening within the music. Thanks for that. I'm 40 now, so it's been a while since music class, and tbh, we where never taught things like that. You've made me listen harder to the music, making me understand why I like certain pieces better.

  • No sabía que Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) tocara el violin! jaja.... Felicitaciones, está muy bueno!!

  • I'm still trying to figure out why I love your music so much, because I really do not like classical. Up to now, the only thing I like in Classical is Beethoven, Stravinskys rites of spring(?), and I saw performed 3 compositions that were penned by a jewish boy (can,t remember his name)who penned one composition at the age 10(?) just before his parents fled Natzi Germany. I never liked anything from Bach, it must be something you do different than others? In any case, you are an amazing artist.

  • You did a great job and I very much enjoyed the notes you provided (no pun intended) to explain what was going on. I feel I understand this piece a bit better now.

  • Absolutely wonderful. I would be lying if I said it moved me as much as Heifetz, but it was superb nonetheless. I do detect a hint of his romantic fluidity here.

  • I wanna Play this for my Senior Solo in 2 years time, I've had the music for 2 months, and still struggling to get past the first page, just because I can't hit the chords, any tips? :l

  • So, I've been playing violin for 3 years now and my teacher has got me started on the Giga from Partita No. 2 in D minor. So, I guess my question is: do you have any technique tips on have to play Bach and/or the Giga?

    Thanks

  • @DrCheezburg , for the Giga - and anything that is technically challenging - don't ever rush! :) It will jumble you something horrible :)...

  • Nice to see a bit of old skool portamento in there- why is portamento considered so unnacceptable? I found the interpretation unfamiliar and hurried in the spicatto sections, but I don't find Heifetze (if that is your influence) fully 'does' Bach as he has other fish to fry! I love the bowing (nice to be able to see a full performance and take notes!) and adherance to the bass line. The commentary was also informative! No doubt we'll be seeing more?; a good performance.

  • Damn that's awesome! I personally like this better on the viola, though (we violists take pride in stealing violin and cello solos and making them sound better XD). Thanks for the annotations they really help in understanding the music itself. Keep the awesome vids up!

  • Ann can you be my new private teacher ?! XD

  • @javierahs09 , LOL, only if your time zone isn't too far away! :)

  • VERY GOOD

  • Bravo!!!!!!

  • Bravo! I liked the notes explaining how Bach structure his music, and your aproach to perform this masterpiece, congratulazione! I´m truly delighted and happy to find this video and stunning performance

  • Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • oh hell some of those finger positions just kill my hand

  • Ohhh my!!! amazing!

  • That's right! Bach is like spinach, is good for you.

  • I just found this. I have to say, I love her disposition as a person here. She sure seems like a real human being. Her bow hand looks a little crimped, but she sure makes it work for her, and that's the main thing. She plays without the shoulder rest, and I love that. The interpretation is pretty good for a live performance, although I would REALLY LOVE to hear her in about 25 years! All in all, I would take her over Hillary Hahn or any other 'young modern' player I have seen. BRAVO!

  • Intonation is really hard, especially once the D major part starts.

  • BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I sure would like to play with her.

  • You are amazing! You're very beautiful and I love your playing! I am a big fan now haha so glad I found your videos. I play cello by the way, 12 yrs and counting (^_^), you're very inspiring to me.

  • non hai per niente uno stile barocco della ciaccona

  • Bow is too tight. Hold violin more to side and your left hand will open up. You will last longer. Will also help your bowing and tone. Bow should push/pull. That being said. You roxxors!

  • @dokeywinklebean I believe Miss Fontanella is doing quite well with her current setup. There are many ways to play a violin and the rigid teaching of today discounts that ideology; look at Milstein's low violin hold. Her tone is amazing and I see no problem with her bowing. Sure, it's unorthodox by today's standards, but she delivers an amazing and unique version. Just my thoughts. :)

  • oh I loved it!! I am limited and held back by how words just cant describe the amazing place I go, when I hear you play! Bravo! Bravo! :-)

  • I am obsessed with this piece. I heard it played by Grumiaux on my front porch one night and was transfixed. Four years later I am still in the same boat. I've spent no less than six hours a night for the last two weeks working on five measures and I still don't have it down, (AAAaaarrgh!). Your splendid video has been invaluable to be. I'm still a bit of a violin novice (4 yrs) but I have been working on this piece for three years. Your video is the best training aid I have found. THANKS!

  • i envy your playing. unlike me im a celloist. learning the violin as I continue to be involved in music. like. raw. no teacher or anything. xD but I love this song.

  • Could Someone write down what is she saying? I cant understand her :$

    Thanks very much!

  • Time to practice....

  • So beautiful... Thank you!

  • Perfecte ! ♥

  • In his heaven Bach is enjoying this even more than I do. Fantastic precision

  • REALLY BEAUTIFUL! NICE NICE NICE :D

  • WOW Thank You. From 4:43 until 6:58 I was just so moved I found it hard to breathe and brought tears. Truly fantastic!

  • I'm learning it on viola. :)

  • By any chance did you use Auer's edition? Or does Heifetz has his own edition? O_O Or did you use your own markings? Your phrasing works so well, it's really "expressive" the fingerings & choices of strings you use! lol I looked at the Auer edition and he wrote out every single note of the arrpegiated section... I read somewhere it is usually more improvised... but theres no way i'm gonna improvise that let alone all the struggling to get through it in practice LOL.This movement is epic. . .

  • :( i need to work on those arpeggiated sections a lot lol... u handled them so masterfully

  • beautiful and talented, i hate you... <3

  • I cant stop listening! it is the best playing of chaconne ive ever listened so far !

Everyday when i come back to home i watch this vid . its so wonderful and relaxing ..

    Thanks for sharing Ann ;D

  • Oh man. You are so amazing. And taught by Heifetz's student! Holy cow!

    I'm jealous. Haha. (:

I'm 15, and I've been off-and-on playing violin (we move around A LOT, and not everywhere has string classes).

Any tips? I'd really appreciate it! I'm just teaching myself vibrato now. How often do you practise? Who's your favourite composer? I really like Chopin.

And, I love your playing. You get so many different, beautiful sounds out of your violin. Ahh. (: Mine mostly squeaks aha.

  • i was wondering about what type of violin do you reccomend? i am passed the student violins and looking for something along the lines of Scott Cao or Snow. the really expensive ones like from the 1700's are out of the question but which one do you think would be good for my first actual violin that will carry me through college?

  • HELLO MY FRIEND CONGRATULATION VERRY SPECIAL I LOVE IT

    GOD BLESS YOU

  • How delightful to discover Ann Fontanella! I just randomly clicked on "Bach Chaconne Played Live" (all of Bach's Partitas and Sonatas are amongst my favorite works of his, my favorite composer) and what a pleasure it was to alight on this impressive rendition.

  • AWSOME !

  • why cant i stop listeninG!

  • beautful remake to bach master piece i love how made a justice and your own version of it and feel did it better than bach made it this a true classic to listen well done

  • im back again....listening :D

  • ive listened to this more that 100 times eversince this summer... and your version is the best! you are so amazing.

  • Thanks for not just being a player of sublime music, but also an enthusiast and sharing the mechanics behind Bach's genius in a comprehensive way.

  • This audio reminds me a lot of old gramophone recordings, and we all know how highly considered those recordings are. I am not a big fan of Heifetz, but you, young lady, may very well tip the scales to his favour.

Am very glad to listen to you. Keep up the beautiful work, because music is the best thing when words run out.

  • I have fallen completely and madly in love with your music. The emotion that you send through your instrument is beautiful. Journey well knowing you have more than greatly inspired me.

  • You remind me a lot of Heifetz in all your pieces. Did you just kind of stumble into sounding similar to his style of playing, or was he someone you always strived to emulate? Very nice.

  • This is my favorite piece of all time. I've been practicing it for the past 2 years (along with other pieces of course, I also love Paganini) and I still don't have it this perfect, although, of course with 2 years I do have it memorized essentially backwards and forwards. I don't know, maybe it's because I love this piece so much that I can't play it perfectly. I can't go all the way through without crying. You play it so masterfully, it really amazes me.

  • just a little thing i found that was a little warkd, where the rests n:s. everything else was great =)

  • Beautifully played, refined yet carries great emotion

  • I'm so jealous of how well this is played!!! I have so far dedicated my entire violin career to learning how to play this specific piece!!!

  • @hippls1013 , Keep practicing :-D!

  • @Annfontanella I will!!! Thank you!!!

  • @hippls1013 Me too!

  • I was transfixed by this fantastic video. As a big Heifetz fan I was delighted to hear this and wondered if I was actually dreaming (as I am left cold by many of the modern performers of today). It was the first time I had come across you and wondered if there was a link to Mr Heifetz I now see you studied with his star pupil, amazing. Beauty, colour, and franckly rock 'n roll(in the spread chordal passages). Words cannot describe how wonderful this is(as I have just amply demonstrated!)

  • @mrwasbesonders , Thank you very much! Heifetz was my hero as a child and I admit to growing up on his recordings!

  • Gosto muito de ver seus videos , adimiro o seus talendo e a sua forma de tocar * belíssima * *-.-*

  • i love your playing so much, i hope that one day i can play as good as you

  • Wonderful! Goregous tone, beautifully shaded notes, pensively interpreted, introspective, soaring, -- this is music so sweet to the ear. And the vibrato, so perfectly executed.... a whisper on the string, perfect intonation, not a cover up for... ! Ann I love the way you play, as so well performed in this work of Bach.

The bel canto is clearly evident in the way you play. Like the great singers, this playing you have shared with us in the Bach Chaccone clearly exhibits a great violinist!

  • you can playy this without score sheet by memory?? what the.. you rock!! i would not play more than 4 notes without score sheet. But i enjoyed your playing well

  • @Fusion2222 Lol - you don't play Bach's great Chaconne from a page of music. Baha. Besides, many violinists will never play it period. It's an ultimate solo piece. For real musicians only. Getting the idea?

  • @Fusion2222 , Thanks!! Memorization may come to you with time. Not everyone can do it naturally. Start by memorizing how a song goes, sing it. Once you have that down, start trying to play it without music - even it's just a few notes at a time!

  • @Annfontanella I can recall almost everything I've ever played, but I cant remember my own cellphone number. I think it comes with practicing any piece.

  • Hi, congratulations!!! i´m a violin estudent from peru, i began to play the beethoven romanza in F and let me tell you, see and hear your performance is inspiring, thank you for be so open and nice, that reflects in you play. The german technique is the best jejeje, thank you again, bye.

  • Absolutely perfect. Ann, you inspire me more than any other musician!

  • Im learning this right now and this is amazing! Thanks so much!

  • I think I just fell in love with you

  • This is truly lovely. You have made this piece your own - and it is so clear that you love it.

    Thank you - great playing.

    gc

  • a Great song ! a Great Violinist! and memorizing all the song it's amazing too!!!

  • Play "Ode To Joy" and publish it in youtube, you play great and I'll listen it to study! Great play! By the way you are veeery cute! :-)

    Regards!

  • Magnificent, Ms. Fontanella. Thank you!

  • This is amazing, congratulations!!!

  • I've so far downloaded 41 versions of this piece from YT, and on some days I play them all or most of them, one after another. It purifies my soul. There's nothing "dark" about this masterpiece:)

  • I love Bach, but never "got" the Chaconne until I heard you play it. You play with such warmth and feeling. Do you have any plans to record (so I can purchase) the Violin Concerto No. 1, Op. 26 in G Minor by Max Bruck?

  • Haha I actually enjoyed this a lot, it is good for you xD

  • Also, I read unclejuniorsoprano's comment about elements of Heifetz and Milstein in your playing. I suggest that you hear hilary hahn's major section in this piece; she relaxes the rhythm to bring out more of the feeling in the chords.

  • Great performance! I hope to play as well as you on the chaconne one day.

  • Very Nice rendition, also love the commentary - helps me understand this piece, which is not so easy. I have listened to Chaconne many, many times with the score in my hands and i find something new every time i listen to it. Milstein performance from his last recital is my favorite so far. P.S You're not only talented but also hot ! :)

  • Over all i liked the performance, i also like the fact that it was LIVE without audio (= which make the strings shine more.. and you actually get the purity of Bach and the Violin. But, i also can see.. that you can still improve the Chaconne, for many reasons, TO me, you play a little to soft for my taste, but over all i loved the performance

  • I see, this is Jascha Heifetz version kind of. Very interesting ^_^, i prefer Nathan Milstein over all violinists!,

  • This is such a beautiful rendition. I dont play violin myself, but constantly listen to it, Heifetz being my ultimate favoured player. It is superb you create a similar sound/tone to him. Its fantastic his playing lives through you!!! STUNNING tone and expression. What violin do you play? Every part of this Chaconne is highly perfected and detailed in the most extraordinary way!!! Thank you so much for sharing this!!! You should be more recognised, you are a much better player than most today!

  • I like the video annotations. I was brought immediately back to AP music theory. Haha

  • Way To Go, Ann!

    Good Job, Ann!

You're Very Very Awesome With That!

  • Thanks for the video, the captions are interesting and you play well. I notice you focus a great deal on the music theory aspect in the captions, such as explaining counterpoint and harmony. This is also reflected in your playing. I'd personally like to see another similar video with the focus on the voices and mood because I think that gets more at the heart of what Bach was writing. For example, take the voices you describe in the 3rd variation. Tell us a story, I'd be interested in hearing.

  • @aimson, Thanks!! I'll give that a shot next. I sometimes feel like my own feelings about the music don't matter too much or aren't very interesting, so I tend to focus on more "objective" things! :)

  • @Annfontanella That was the sense I got from the captions and reflected by the playing as well. For me, the next step up from the objective is the subjective - the interpretations you give that are unique. I don't think it can be a sterile and emotionless interpretation though, which is often the case with violinists. The sort of bland and lifeless playing heard far too often with Bach literally breaks my heart (I won't mention names). I only wish Neveu had recorded the Chaconne...

  • Stunning and superb interpretation !

Love the emotion at 7:00 and in the finish 12:40

I wish one day i could play like that. Looking forward for more video of you Ann !

  • @whylf, You are very kind! I am glad you enjoyed it!

  • @Annfontanella I was wondering where you are in the world. Partly out of curiosity and would love for you to my teacher. My teacher now is a nice person but bad teacher, I need someone who know's what they are doing.

  • @qwertyui201 , I live in a few different places right now because of concerts and personal affairs (Philly, NY, and FL). I'm sorry to hear that it isn't working for you with your teacher. Have you spoken with her about your issues? :)
