According to Alison Weir Lady Jane had ample opportunity to save her life by converting to Catholicism, as Mary I was reluctant to execute a kinswoman and was sympathetic to the ways in which she may have been forced into being queen. Are there any contemporary accounts that support the theory that Jane's refusal and resolution to become a Protestant martyr resulted in her execution?
Mary beheaded Jane Grey, and Elizabeth beheaded Mary Stuart. Each of them beheaded a Queen. Their father beheaded two. They must have gotten it from him.
@MightyPopzilla But for completely different reasons.. Mary and Elizabeth had to behead them to keep their throne, especially with mary queen of scots, as the catholics in England were plotting to overthrow Elizabeth and make Mary the new catholic queen. Henry was just a fickle with his wives, and would do anything to be rid of one he grew tired of.
@EmzLuvzCatz Reasons aside, they are the only royal family in England's history to have a record of beheading royalty. Granted, only Mary Stuart and Jane Grey had royal blood, but you have to wonder if having Henry for a father affected their decisions.
@nmrstora you must be very proud for having such a brave strong woman in your family :) while her husband and father in law cried and begged for mercy she held her pride and dignity till the very end
Jane might not have wanted to be queen, but she was not a poor helpless little girl. From what I've read she more than held her own against the Catholic priests who tried to convert her to Catholicism before her death.
@Toops144 - excellent answer. Same reason why Henry VIII ordered the execution of anyone with Plantagenet blood, even the elderly Margaret, Countess of Salisbury. The Tudor claim was shaky at best, and Henry's insecurity and drive for a son illustrated this. It is obvious that some people here do not understand that one cannot judge the actions of those in the past without understanding the times in which they lived. Atrocious to us, yes, but perfectly understandable to them.
The music being played during the scenes of "Jane Grey" in this video, is the same song as in The Other Boleyn Girl, when Mary Boleyn sings for Queen Katherine :')
Poor jane she was a victim of circumstances, she was condemned because she wouldnt change her religion if she had become catholic she wouldnt have died.Mary tryed to help her by sending a catholic preist to her but she wouldnt change so she perished.Mary didnt want to kill her they were cousins.
@mindistorted - I respect your views, but you must realize that Mary Queen of Scots had contrived not only at Elizabeth's overthrow but assassination. As long as Mary remained alive, she would have been a magnet for Catholics in both England and on the Continent to dispose of Elizabeth.
I'm sure Elizabeth realized the implications of her decision regarding her cousin. But it came down to her very survival. It must have been with much trepidation that she finally signed the death warrant.
@Cissy2cute I think you are quite correct in this point of view. Not sure Elizabeth was willing to tolerate her Catholic and Protestant subjects living with freedom of religion (as portrayed in the Cate Blanchett movie). Does appear the Catholic Church was reluctant to accommodate. Yes, Mary was a magnet for Catholics- a potential time bomb for Elizabeth. With the plotting to. minimally, overthrow Elizabeth and ultimately, to kill her, it seems Mary Queen of Scots brought on her own demise.
@sawleo - I think Elizabeth was tolerant of Catholics as long as they kept quiet, did not make a spectacle of their beliefs and did not threaten her rule or her life. That probably was as moderate as any ruler of the time could be.
Mary Queen of Scots' behavior was so erratic and her judgment so skewered that there is a theory that she suffered from severe bipolar disorder. After reading Jane Dunn's book on Elizabeth and Mary, I have to concur. It certainly explains much of her actions.
@Cissy2cute Thanks for those clarifications. Toleration of Catholics as long as they "stayed in their place". Makes sense! Who wants to be bothered with unnecessary war.
All of this is all quite interesting and fascinating. Whether villainous or charitable, I marvel at the power roles played by women, in England, during those times.

Scum bastard shitbags they dress as if they are honorbale people but they are all lowlife sadist carelss worthless beasts from the inside. ..0..
The Victorian era was the 19th Century, Jane lived in the Tudor era, which was the 16th Century. You're only confused because the painting was created and was popular in the Victorian era when attitudes had changed dramatically, not least because by the 19th Century England had become mostly Protestant and Jane had and still has become a tragic heroin.
..0.. Anyone who dares pull an axe of torture or kill a defenseless helpoless poor woman should be sent to hell. No matter what she did, its wrong to end a poor girls life? What could have she done that makes this right? What good will the girl losing her soul give? Disgusting capital punishment judges should be burned in hell! especially when its a poor helpless woman being decapitated or slaughtered!! ..1..
..1.. Lowlife scum, we men are responsible to take care and guide our women, not to kill them if htey did wrong! Fuck those types of men. they act as they care? Fuck em this is all acting. But you're judging the events through the eyes of a 21st Century Western person. Remember that this happened over 450 years ago, when England was a totally different place and English people were totally different to those who live here now, or even in Victorian times come to think of it. What we call ghastly terrible events now weren't viewed anywhere near as much in the 16th Century. You might say that what we were then is what the Middle East is today.
..2.. A priest is supposed to show love and forgiveness, not snuff and killing!A young girl, a young sweet girl? My God this poor girl didn't even know what was happening to her! Well you know what, she had abig heart and forgived you but God will not and he will burn and torture you in hell forever you shitfaced scum!!..3..
..4.. You cut her head!! you should have your balls lit on fire and shoved in your mouth while you shoke on them you shit face. A man has the honor to defend and protect a girl. Only a coward dares put an axe on a poor girl's neck! they just act sad so they won't feel guilty of having not felt sad for her. But they didn't do anything, they just stood there while she was wondering scared where the axe is comming from. instead of stopping it, they guide her to where her head should be cut!!
@attie3 this was done against Mary's better judgment. She truly loved Jane. She actually helped raise Jane (cousin) and Elizabeth (sister). After the family plots. Jane was left alive. This was bad news for Mary's husband to be Philip of Spain. He wanted Jane dead before he arrived. There was already upraising in Jane's name. For Mary there was only one choice. The protestant line had to be removed. As they wanted the Catholic line removed. Mary had the same problem with Elizabeth, but she lived
In 1554 Sir Thomas Wyatt and Henry Grey led a rebellion against Mary. As a result Lady Jane Grey and her husband, Guildford Dudley, were executed. The decision to execute her was not made by Mary, but by Sir Thomas White.
I have always wonderd if Lady Jane was the first queen of england not because of marrige either her or mary tudor but to me it is tragic that Jane had to die at only seventeen did mary rember that she also could've die at also a very young age in her teenage years?
@MissJasperHale18 . This is a thought. It can be said Jane is the first Queen Regent. Some would say Mary I. Others will say it was Queen Empress Matilda some 300 years earlier. Matilda was named by her father the King, as Jane was by her cousin, the King. In both cases there was open support for the appointment till it happened. Jane was killed, however Matilda proved formidable and actually took the thrown for a time against Steven. Maitilde's son did succeed after Steven.
I've read that at Jane's execution there was an "unusual amount of blood", though I've never been able to find out why that was. Can anyone shed a light on this?
Jane didn't even WANT to be queen. She refused but she was forced into it. The fact that she was executed just sickens me- she didn't do anything. She was just a scared, young girl that was thrust into something she didn't want + she hardly even got to live her life. RIP Lady Jane.
