technically james cameron had been planning avatar for quite some time. he had it partially developed before titanic but decided that he didn't like the technology at the time. so he stalled it. so really he's had the idea for longer than hellboy did. though i don't think either copied from the other.
The way James Cameron talked about his movie and the claims of him "copying" or "stealing" came down to: "I did Aliens and other movies, where other successful franchises drew inspiration (ex: Halo). So I have full creative freedom to steal all I want from other franchises, but I'll do it prettier and hipper for this HD generation"
The comparisons here are interesting but in terms of behavior and movement they aren't too similar. Its not like he went out and copied it but they share some looks.
they totally stole sound effects from jurassic park too when that thing roars at 1:58 I seriously think this movie is crap along with the Titanicesque song that is played ceaselessly throughout.
James Cameron Cheated? LOL? He just copied some ideas from other movies, or maybe he even do that in the first place =) Many directors and producers and writtters have taken ideas from other movies and modified them a litte bit, we see it all the time not only in the movie industry but also in serveral others. Someone has to have ideas from somewhere =) Hlboy took ideas from somewhere as did the movie that hlboy got ideas from =) Nothing wrong about it =) Great Director =)Excelency Of A Movie =D
Wow good catch but I actually thought you would point out the NA'VI design similarity to "Abe Sapien" cause that's the one that stood out more in my book but, anyway who cares..No idea is original anymore as long as you make it interseting.
close but nope....in the art of avatar book Jim designed the thanator in 95 it has his drawing in there...a pretty bad one actually...colored pencils and all. But it has the date of 95 on it so I think this is just a random fluk but still two great scenes.
well I don't know but the tanathor doesn't look like the Hound of resurection. Cool movies though but not that they ever looked at hellboy and said "We just have to get one of those". the little things that are the same are probably just coicedence
Cameron came up the the concept of the Thanator long before Hellboy ever. He was going to make Avatar immediately after Titanic, but the technology didn't exist yet. He posted the scriptment (between a script and a treatment) on the internet for a time. Besides, the Thanator is more feline while the HOUND of Resurrection is more canine. My vote is in favor of the originality the Thanator and Cameron.
didnt james cameron have most of teh creatures/story etc done in the mid 90s and was waiting for technology to catch up to film the movie??? even if it was stole, avatar pulled it off way better! i do however think that they ripped off the sound that it makes form the trex from jurassic park... have a listen at 6:21 and you can hear it really well!
i see the similarities between the two creatures, but James Cameron actually came uo with the idea of and created the Thanator himself. Of course not to say that the HoR(lol) wasnt a point of inspiration for some of its features.
at this point in history nothin is original, so saying he came p with it by himself is a mute point. However that's not to say he directly stole it either, it's just a lot of the features
I wasnt saying he did, theres actual proof and sketches that he himself has drawn of the creature, therefore i highly doubt he stole its design from the Hound of Ressurection. It was most likely a coincidence, i mean the man created an entire universe, i dont think he ran out of idea's at any point in his journey through that.
Edit: I thought you were referring to the main characters. The creature from Hellboy does have semblance to the creature found in Avatar HOWEVER--I could make a case that they are many creatures in Scifi to draw inspiration from in producing the creature called Thanator --I mean, think about Predator for a moment and you'll see what I mean.
I referred to drawing inspiration and taking aspects from Sci-Fi creatures...when I first saw the creature from Hellboy---it didn't scream originality because I've seen similar creatures from different mediums albeit slightly different. in appearance.
I'll send you a link to a picture which might peek your interest. Remember, avatar trailer wasn't released until winter of 2009 so the person couldn't have known how the creature, Thanator would look like unless the person was a part of the team created designed Pandora and its inhabitants.
(con) This brings me to my point --that certain aspects of Sci-Fi creatures are seen in other fictional creatures. Obviously, you cannot rule out that they (creators of Avatar) simply copied the creature but you have to think about other reasons like coincidence or drawing inspiration from other fictional creatures.
I When you look at the picture look to the bottom for the creature; you'll see it's EXTRMELY similar to Thanator in certain aspects. Decide for yourself. Talk to you later. Peace.
Isn't Hellboy red? Doesn't he also have a stoned hand or whatever his hand is made of and also--doesn't have smaller eyes and possess horns?
The characters in Avatar seem to be more lemur like physically. They are long legged, big eyed, and agile while traversing the wild forests of Pandora.

Cameron is a noted thief (Terminator) but I don't think I would count this as theft even if that's where he got the inspiration for the model.
