nick cave's best when he's completely psychotic. I'll take The Birthday Party over the Bad Seeds any day of the week. Bad Seeds are too polished for my liking.
what's sad? I had no clue nick cave was the lead singer of this band.. I'd heard of them a bunch of times but never looked into them.. must say I'm surprised to see him.. I always assumed his first band was the bad seeds..
"can you tell us a bit about the birthday party?" "hummm, no!" christ! no wonder they never made it! if the members themselves won't promote the band, how is it supposed to work exactly?
It's called 'making music'. You know, that thing real bands actually do, i suppose most bands today concentrate on being marketing tools than musicians though.
I wonder if anyone knew Nick Cave has a priceless sense of humor? Met him twice in '82 in Rotterdam, Holland. We shared the same habit. The 1st time he invited me for a fix in his dressingroom in: Hal 4, a small concerthal & former Watertower Building, which is still there after 28 years. Even hooked on heroïne he was damn funny & intelligent. He said while preparing his fix before the show started:'as you can see am mixing it with water as it is very expensive stuff'.
Amazingly new way of songwriing...very impressing...but it sounds so damn sad & abandoned...it's the soundtrack of DEATH, just like sound of the track 'Street Hassle' on the album Street Hassle from Lou Reed released around 1977(?)
@pw342 Thats the best story around here, i am jealous :D Maybe the only way to upgrade that is fucking Nick Cave during a Birthday Party gig on stage *giggles*
i was at the gig in New Zealand when the whole Phil Clavert came to a head and they did their show with a substitute drummer on loan from The Marching Girls. The set was short but memorable.
Surprise Surprise! A little known band from Greece was doing exactly what the Birthday Party were doing at the same time. Unfortunately I no longer see the friend who gave me a copy of the tape. And I lost the only copy I had.
oh damn damn damn it. i would die to see that. to stay there in the first row and...just go in that space between insane and complete madness...there where you meet not good but outstanding music
FUCK....is he sexy or is he sexy? I never thought that i would think something like that first while watching a nick cave/birthday party video (and i am only here to watch videos of them). But...damned...his movements....i would also have snatched his shirt that evening...hrrrrrrrrr. I am paralysed...fingers down the throat of love nick :D
@Angrautimas You know nick sucked my cock in return for me letting him fuck this hot youngy i was pumping at the time in Adelaide in the early 80s when i was using hammer
so glad to see this...love tracys bass sound.....from philly here where, apparently, vurtually no one got this music when it was a'happening -- too authentic for the goths and too artistic for the punks......they always agreed with me quite well, especially the junkyrad lp.
@EuchridEucrow1 bullshit mate,we were watching this band live since the 70s,aussies knew of our great rock n rollers, especially the party,saints,ac/dc,radio birdman and others, goths weren't even "invented" then,we punks fully got it and yes the peel sessions were great
I always loved the simplicity of this band, and how they could make magic out of just plucking instruments, banging things and screaming. No wonder they got together with Blixa Bargeld later, lol.
The Jesus shirt makes it. =] God, I love Nick. I think it's hilarious that he didn't consider the Birthday Party actual music. That is was just something to do and that only crazy people would enjoy. Then I supoose I'm crazy, I don't care. =P He's amazing.
His Mom must be so proud!

The only bands that are on par with this band are Scratch Acid. Big Black and Jesus Lizard. They are all totally fucked up in a good way.

@RadioFriendlyNoise I'll agree with you on the Jesus Lizard (and maybe scratch acid, but shameful as it is, I like their newer stuff better).

people all around were staring at us but we didnt give a shit
the music was manic and loud and we were wasted.
so it happened quite naturally

yep. definitely one of my weirdest memories.
dont think i ever knew her name actually. but we did meet again at another gig a week later.
i wasnt even sure i'd seen the birthday party til one of my friends confirmed it a while ago.
those were the days eh. mental music, alchohol and drug fueled sex with random strangers in public places. lolz. :)

@pw342 Hahaha ur my new personal hero, mate.
Wish these guys were still around :/
I never got to see them live *cries*
I was born in the wrong era
all the music I love was in the late 80's :/
Hate being young lol
So I can't remenisce with you about ye good olde days,
But I'm envious of you for having embraced and been part of them, none the less.
