8 bits vs 12 bits is not a difference of 4 - 2*12 (4096) - 2*8(256) = 3840
this is binary not base 10 math - so those 4 bits make an enormous difference and that is why RAW has so much more information than a JPEG image - not disagreeing with your reasoning on how to shoot only on the math - RAW image has 16 times more information than the JPEG
I have started out on RAW... and enjoying all the tweeking'..and getting some good results..However .I am trying all settings..but a white washed out sky still cannot be recovered,,, /.I am off out again to try with with some graduated ND. filters. Any tips ? for 'awesome' sky shots..?.....Dj..UK.
@FOXHOLESLODGE When you shoot RAW you have to pay more attention to your histogram than the jpeg preview you see at the back of your camera. Expose your picture so everything is "in the middle", including the sky. Maybe the foreground will seem a bit underexposed at that point, that's ok. A blown out sky means your picture is overexposed and that cannot be recovered. When everything fits into your histogram, you can do what you want with it in post-processing.
@pfilteau Many thanks for your input....I must confess that I have not took much notice of the information shown from histograms....I rely more on what I see in the viewfinder....I have absorbed your info' and will follow your advice... many thanks again.. much appreciated... Dj...UK.
its all about style in a picture, every photographer has one. other prefer set the picture style before they shoot to see immediate result (JPEG), other prefer to set one on a computer (RAW).
Shooting RAW isn't just about fixing problems, it's about editing your pictures like YOU want them to be. Of course if you don't want to edit your pictures at all on your computer, shoot JPEG! But if you're getting serious with photography, post-processing is something you have to learn. What do you think is better: to set your parameters (wb, contrast, saturation, etc) BEFORE taking the shot and hope for the best? or to set the same parameters LATER while you're looking at your shot?
Ive been watching almost all of your videos. Now, I was like: ˜Hey, let me check this related videos to see other professional opinions". I just wasted my time!!! They al tried to teach the same things you are teaching and in BORING ways. I`m a graduated teacher myself and I can tell you man that teaching is a part of you as a human being. Congratulations on finding a way into photography as a profession and spreading your knowledge the way you do!
I always shoot raw, but what I neva figured out and really pisses me off is the difference btw jpeg and raw, I can't agree that the difference is indistinguishable, for me is very obvious, but I must admit it all also depends on which program you use to open it..........I wish I could find the answer to solve it...:(............BTW luv ur work!!!
dude thank you sooo much it's about time somene on youtube said take your photos' perfect the frist time dont leve it t photo shop every video on here are like fix your phot's in photo shop later
I love watching this! You're SO entertaining as well as informative. Thank you! I'm planning on getting the T2i very soon. So, you've helped me a lot. Thanks again!
I shoot JPEG if I'm doing candid photos because it really does slow your processing speed of your pictures. Depending on what class of memory card you have it might not make a difference with a Class 5 or higher card. I used RAW for Photoshoots or Landscapes.
Shoot right first time. We're lucky to be shooting digital so we CAN be frivolous, but the art is getting it perfect first time, like you'd have to get the art right, shooting film.
Hey man, you should do a video about shooting with auto settings and shooting manual. 80 -90% of the time i shoot manual, and it has taught me a lot about how a camera works in terms of which shutter speed and f/ to use for what type of shot i'm going for. Due to trial and error i can confidently say i am a more knowledgble photographer. I like the feeling of having more control over how i shot and what i shoot depending on the situation of course. what's your insight to this Fontana?
Thanks dude, good info. I have been struggling with the same thing, "JPEG or RAW" and I guess the thing is when I shoot RAW only, I don't even get a preview and that is a bummer to have open up everyone just to see what it looks like. So, I have been shooting on RAW/JPEG setting. But again, more memory space. Just don't know what to do. Take care.
you need to install a codec to see thumbnails on your computer. Since every camera manufacturer has it's own format, you have to download it on the internet.
RAW doesn't stand for anything. It's not an acronym. Just like raw meat needs to be cooked before eating (for most people), and just like a building is built from raw materials etc. The digital data that is captured during exposure is in an uncooked raw format so to speak and needed to be manipulated to some extent to create the finished photo before being saved to another format...usually jpeg, but not always.
Great Info Rob! As usual :P I just sent you an email to photomagic, with a HUGE question that I really need help with. Check it out please? Stay cool mate!
@Vpshufflerz RAW is not about fixing when you messed up although it helps. RAW is a negative of a photo, like in the old days when you take a picture thats not it, its barley the start! before you would retouch it in a red room now we use photoshop or lightroom. skipping that is like telling me you ca shoot a movie with out editing.

My camera has Raw and JPEG simultaneous shooting. I don't see the point because just having the RAW file makes the JPEG unnecessary.
