Apparently the Allies didn't think the reprisals outweighed the benefit because they didn't try to take out any other Nazi officials in this fashion. I question the wisdom of the operation since there was no shortage of thugs within the Nazi hierarchy to replace any one single cockroach that might get squashed.
@1276epr Interesting insight. I think the elimination of this particular beast was driven by the Czech government in exile. It they weren't pushing for it, it probably would not have happened. As far as the rest of them, I think the Allies realized what you are suggesting, however as far as Hitler was concerned they eventually came to the conclusion that his skills as a war leader was actually shortening the war and helping the Allies, so they had no desire to take him out.

not as often as is sometimes proclaimed, but due to it's open bolt and very large charge-handle slot, difficult to keep clean and to even worse, it exposes precisely those areas that really must be clean to function properly. It is however a masterpiece of modern mass production and certainly not worse than most SMG of the era, costing ten times as much or more to produce. Then again, reliability is still somewhat of an issue with rapid firing blowback operated firearms.
Are you sure about Heydrich riding in the back seat? Almost all the Nazi leaders tended to ride up front with the driver in imitation of Hitler. They would ride in back seat if they had a guest.

there were/are 4 common causes of jamming in stenguns.
1. failed extraction
2. failed feed
3. indentation of the bolt housing
4. bolt seizure (overheating or excessive fouling)
No. 2, 3 & 4 were eliminated in the Mk.III and later, after the war, the extractor issue was solved with the introduction of the Sterling SMG.
It's noteworthy that all these issues existed in the Bergmann and Erma designs (MP18. 22. 28). Overall however, the Sten was better, and lots cheaper than the originals.

@ehunter2 I don't think it actually jammed. I believe what happened was that he forgot to take the safety off, i.e. move the bolt to the firing position.
@ehunter2 since they used grass to conceal the weapon, it may have clogged the weapon. Or perhaps because they requested that the stengun to be made in 3 parts. This may have contributed to it, historians could not collectively agree to one single reason :)

I based my view on the belief that killing him didn't shorten the war or end the occupation of Czechoslovakia. I don't see how killing him helped the allied war effort. And the reprisals were terrible. Just my opinion, its a very debatable point. In my view the best forms of resistance were economic in nature. Industrial sabotage, work slowdowns, damage to transportation infrastructure, etc. Note how the Soviet partisans concentrated almost exclusively on paralysing the rail network the Germans used in the USSR. It was the best way to go and they weren't worried about moral restrictions either. Killing Heydrich was a 'headline grabbing' story, but it didn't really change anything.

@1276epr Interesting insight. I think the elimination of this particular beast was driven by the Czech government in exile. It they weren't pushing for it, it probably would not have happened. As far as the rest of them, I think the Allies realized what you are suggesting, however as far as Hitler was concerned they eventually came to the conclusion that his skills as a war leader was actually shortening the war and helping the Allies, so they had no desire to take him out.

If I had been residing in Vichy France, for example, I would have told the Allied politicians that they got me into this mess with their inept policies so they can come with their armies and get me out. came from inside the car as if the grenade detonated while rolling on the floor boards. Hard to say. Another detail that suggests the grenade went off inside the car is that Heydrichs over coat

It was a new gun from factory so it had a lot of grease as protection measure, they didn´t clean well the sten gun. It It would have died with the bullets? We don´t know because it could have survived his wounds

@colacas I think a lot of fear too... it was not easy shoot the highest SS chief in the country.

@colacas He kept it in a suitcase with rabbit food. That caused it to jam. That, and it was a notoriously piss-poor automatic weapon at the best of times.

there were/are 4 common causes of jamming in stenguns.
1. failed extraction
2. failed feed
3. indentation of the bolt housing
4. bolt seizure (overheating or excessive fouling)
No. 2, 3 & 4 were eliminated in the Mk.III and later, after the war, the extractor issue was solved with the introduction of the Sterling SMG.
It's noteworthy that all these issues existed in the Bergmann and Erma designs (MP18. 22. 28). Overall however, the Sten was better, and lots cheaper than the originals.

@ehunter2 there is a *story* that the gun wasnt jammed and it work but Gabčík doesnt want to fire becouse behind Heydrich car - in fire line - was a trolley and he dont want to hurt czech people

@ehunter2 Sten guns also had a quirk where the rounds could be loaded so that they easily jammed and would not feed properly from the magazine.

@ehunter2 I don't think it actually jammed. I believe what happened was that he forgot to take the safety off, i.e. move the bolt to the firing position.

@ehunter2 since they used grass to conceal the weapon, it may have clogged the weapon. Or perhaps because they requested that the stengun to be made in 3 parts. This may have contributed to it, historians could not collectively agree to one single reason :)

Makes me wonder what I would do if I lived under a truly criminal, totalitarian, fascist state. My morality would tell me to violently rebel like the assassins did. But look at how many more innocent people died as a result... I dunno

I argue the hit was a mistake. It changed nothing. It cannot be shown that the war was shortened by a single day by it. And the reprisals.. too many innocent people were killed to justify it. There is the natural human reaction to see it as heroic or daring or deserved payback for an S.O.B. getting his...but he would have got that after the war anyways & all those killed in the reprisals might have still been alive. Were the people of Lidice asked if they wanted to sacrifice themselves for this?

Good points and I'm tempted to agree but would you say the same if it had been Himmler assasinated at the same cost? Who knows what direct future role Heydrich was destined to have in the prolongation of the war or the efficiency of the 'final solution'. He would probably have become more influential as the war turned against the nazis. Or maybe he would have led a revolt against the nazi leaders... who knows.

I based my view on the belief that killing him didn't shorten the war or end the occupation of Czechoslovakia. I don't see how killing him helped the allied war effort. And the reprisals were terrible. Just my opinion, its a very debatable point. Now had it been Speer, or Manstein, Guderian, or some brilliant Nazi scientist who was an inch away from building the atomic bomb, etc,,,,,, that MIGHT have been a very different story.

Part of the thinking behind the hit on Heydrich was that under his control Bohemia and Moravia were the most productive and efficiant war industries outside of Germany itself and killing Heydrich might have been meant to shake things up.

Undoubtedly true. Probably this was an embarassement to the Czechoslovakian government in exile too. I just don't think it was worth it - but admittedly I'm saying this with the benefit of hindsight. Any assassination act should be subjected to three questions. 1) Will it shorten the war? 2) Will there be reprisals? 3) if question one is yes does it justify question 2?

I guess that would need some kind of profit and loss calculation,will the war be sufficiantly shortened to justify the cost of the reprisal?

Yes, of course. If it could have been shown that killing him shortened the war, that would have been a powerful argument. I don't think that it did though. But admittedly I am saying this with benefit of hindsight. Also please consider that the people doing the calculations will not be suffering the reprisals.

wasnt Heydrich Hitler"s chosen successor? what if if a core of anti Hitler top brass deposed Hitler and replaced him with Heydrich?(if he hadnt been assassinated of course) do you think it would have altered how the war ended?I have no doubt the Allies would have still won.But would the post war situation(especially with regard to the Russians and the formation of East Germany) have been the same?

What this hit did was to take out a top nazi, create heroes and (to be brutal) perhaps steel the resolve of czech resistance fighters by murdering innocent people. You seem much better informed than me. I don't know too much about the subsequent role of the czech resistance in ending the war so maybe you can answer this? Did the resistance play an important role and was their commitment strengthened or weakened by this assassination?

In my view the best forms of resistance were economic in nature. Industrial sabotage, work slowdowns, damage to transportation infrastructure, etc. Note how the Soviet partisans concentrated almost exclusively on paralysing the rail network the Germans used in the USSR. It was the best way to go and they weren't worried about moral restrictions either. Killing Heydrich was a 'headline grabbing' story, but it didn't really change anything.

Apparently biologically warfare was used here. The bomb was laced with botulism. They said he died of poisoning from horse hair in the car seat. This explanation always sounded suspect.
