Speed isn't everything. Buddy was amazing, in the composition and the harmony. Joey know how to drum in an average manner... Nothing too special, a decent drummer who made a name with the band. Without the band he would be nothing... Like Lars Ulrich

And just for the record I am 53, hardly a kid. I actually lean more towards Peart, but that is because I favor rock/heavy metal. And that is only MY opinion. Having said that, I do recognize Buddy Rich for the true genius that he was.

He was still able to produce the most impressive amount of footage by any drummer of all time though. Probably the most recorded drummer ever.
Buddy Rich was and is an amazing drummer. If you have ever heard some of the metal drummers have said they say that Buddy is what inspired them to play. They have said given the time he started that he is the best hands down. This coming from metal drummers themselves. So if you go by other drummers then Buddy Rich is the best drummer ever. He started playing like this in the mid 50's. Close to 60 years ago, and he can still play like this. That is great and if you disagree than you know nothing

What you have to realize, and seek knowledge about, is that Buddy ALWAYS was a band drummer first! he was the first choice of the best ensembles in the world since in his early 20s, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, Harry James etc. he brought new energy into big band playing and set new standards for keeping them together musically. He was also one of the most sensitive, tasteful brush players. Peter Erskine: "compared to Buddy, we are all just fumbling around"

@bengativo6 ...... I totally agree with you! The ONLY rock drummer that I would say is in Buddy's league is Neil Peart of RUSH. I think it is a toss up between Rich and Peart. And just for the record I am 53, hardly a kid. I actually lean more towards Peart, but that is because I favor rock/heavy metal. And that is only MY opinion. Having said that, I do recognize Buddy Rich for the true genius that he was.

He was still able to produce the most impressive amount of footage by any drummer of all time though. Probably the most recorded drummer ever.

Buddy Rich was and is an amazing drummer. If you have ever heard some of the metal drummers have said they say that Buddy is what inspired them to play. They have said given the time he started that he is the best hands down. This coming from metal drummers themselves. So if you go by other drummers then Buddy Rich is the best drummer ever. He started playing like this in the mid 50's. Close to 60 years ago, and he can still play like this. That is great and if you disagree than you know nothing

What you have to realize, and seek knowledge about, is that Buddy ALWAYS was a band drummer first! he was the first choice of the best ensembles in the world since in his early 20s, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, Harry James etc. he brought new energy into big band playing and set new standards for keeping them together musically. He was also one of the most sensitive, tasteful brush players. Peter Erskine: "compared to Buddy, we are all just fumbling around"

Who the HELL cares when you're considered to be a huge influence on drumming and the most technical drummer of all time...
