Also that chart he showed seemed to have an upward trend.. yes we warm then cool then warm again definitely, but it doesn't happen in an upward trend like stocks.... does it?
Ecoanxiety? What the shit is that? Something to eat? I've been hacking down trees, polluting the air and throwing trash into the nature for years, and I'm just not feeling it. Myth busted! Fuck you, ecoactivists!
@suvakofin oh come on. Just because the weather hasn't changed doesn't mean there isn't a 2-mile-wide island of garbage growing bigger every day in the north pacific--and just because you're not going to choke on your own garbage doesn't mean some hungry animal won't.

@Emidretrauqe Pollution can be real, I was mocking the so-called "ecoanxiety", not pollution. Call me a monster, but I'm not going to lose sleep over something that won't affect me in my own lifetime. It's not going to affect me, and I'm not going to get all hysterical about it.
@suvakofin You don't have to lose sleep over it. You just need to be logical about the things that you do. It's not about feeling bad as much as it is about feeling good, which is why the suckers in this episode are so happy to fork over their spare change. Instead of paying a moron for no reason, just make sure your garbage goes in the trash, that's all.
@Emidretrauqe Except recycling is bullshit too, another way for wnb-hippies to feel good about themselves. We're fucked, anyways. So don't give a shit, lay back, smoke a jiffy and chill out. :D
@Emidretrauqe Duhh, I thought it would be quite obvious that I'm an "uncaring dipshit" as you called it. There are many, many more acute problems in the world than pollution/global warming/massive islands of trash. Like for example impending economic breakdown, civil unrest in Britain and other parts of Europe, the whole middle-east is up in arms over something or other again etc. Do forgive me if I simply don't find it in myself to care for the environment at the moment,
@suvakofin If you're in North America like most of us, then pollution takes precedence over those since it is something that you will see and deal with here at home. Unless of course you stay at home all the fucking time. Then you probably won't see any litter. You could also be oblivious, too. But that's certainly not a defense.
There are much better reasons to be worried about fossil fuels than global warming (or cooling, for that matter). Even the Gulf oil spill - which is a legitimate concern - pales in comparison to the economic problems of oil, coal, and gas. Why are we burning all these fuels for ourselves when developing industries in countries in China and India have greater need of it? If we trade our fuels with them while investing the profits in renewable energy, we'll all come out ahead in the long run.
"global warming" and "climate change" are political terms. Capitol "S" Science is religious humanism. The real scientific tests are being performed everyday by regular people like you and I that have the most important task of analizing an overwhelming amount of information that we receive via t.v., news, web, and the general social discourse of a brainwashed society. If you believe that the truth is established by consensus then there is no hope for you, you are a tool, a robot, a fool.
Science is a body of knowledge and is the very body of knowledge that resulted in the industrial revolution, technology, medical science, and yes, even modern weaponry and WMDs. Don't let the media's horrible skills at informing the public about Science trick you into believing Science is something it is not. It is not a religion, to say it is, is to prove you don't know what a religion is.
Real Science, specifically in this situation, Neuroscience and Psychology, shows that humans typically see what they want to see. So I highly doubt, that even if I provided first hand evidence, you would be convinced. Look up Apophenia, it is essentially the reason why you see a face in a meaningless pattern of shapes like 2 circles and a line. You try to disprove things against what you belief, but exclude your own beliefs the same treatment.
boy, a weatherman. I'm sure glad they got someone who's qualified to tell us the weather on TV. I'm sure that makes hima an expert on anthropogenic carbon emmisions as insulators
To examine why people go through these bouts of "eco-guilt," one must examine why these people are suddenly going through powerful visceral vicarious anxiety. Most likely, these individuals are stressed about other factors in their life, and through facets of media or personal opinion, a transference of guilt occurs. It is easier to deal with stress and guilt once you have given it a tangible face. What NEEDS to happen is these people should treat the source of their stress, rather than THIS BS.
Take it from a 4 year psych major, people. This IS bullshit. Wait, it isn't even worth giving THAT title. This is just goofy nonsense. This is like being an ambulance chaser, but as a therapist. These people are like magicians: lots of flair and the appearance of legitimacy, but behind it all is cold knowledge that you're a fraud, preying on the desperation of ignorant people with weak constitutions and an overwhelming sense of crushing guilt.
It does when there wasn't a cooling trend, just a single radical spike in 1998. The very next year was among the coldest in the last 12 years, and was warming thereafter. I agree its retarded to treat al gore as a climate scientist, but its ignorant not to listen to the actual climate scientists. I appreciate P&T most of the time, but the absence of experts and scientists on this particular issue is troubling.

You don't want to miss a serious condition because you didn't trust doctors.
Penn and Teller's opening bit on this one sucked. There overall point, that carbon credits and that kind of bullshit is bullshit is right. But the bit at the begining.. well It was a article from time magazine which is not a scientific journal, it was not substantiated and Global warming is a fact but it is not just CO2 it is caused by CO2 the sun and more factors than we know at this time. Look for a chart that combines CO2 and solar activity and you get a near perfect fit for increased temp.
Oh and when looking for charts always look for ones that go back at least a thousand years. That way you get a better perpective on CO2. Especially if you get one that accounts for solar activity.
Oh and the weather guys graph is crap because it uses the ARCTIC air temperature. It should be useing Global Average Temperature. Which would result in a completely different graph.
The weatherman is misinterpreting his own chart. Yes, the temperature does fluctuate as the solar activity fluctuates, but overall, temperature is on an upward trend. The temperature line at the end of the chart is way higher than the starting point, just like the line showing fossil fuel consumption. Despite all the fluctuations, it never goes all the way back down to where it was.
Its funny when people say that theres science on boths sides, last time I checked there was Al Gore, a graph and a couple of crack pots on one side and a petition signed by 15,000 scientists on the other...
Shadyhunter is right, his comment shouldn't be mass thumbs'd down. The Time magazine article is not representative of the majority opinion of the scientific community.
I have to agree - 99% of the time Penn and Teller are awesome but they did in fact make a mistake here :/

Yeah fair enough. My comment wasn't meant in any way to be a dig at Penn & Teller, I love Penn & Teller, it was just saying how silly it was that someone pointed out a legitimate mistake they made and had his comment mass thumbs down voted :(
Gobal warming is thought to be able to cause cooling by stopping or slowing ocean currents. I usually agree with P&T but this time the science is against them. Burning (waste) of resources and the release of toxic or climate changing emissions most certainly does have environmental impacts. Also those graphs the weatherman used were unrelated. You have to graph emissions with respect to avg temp change, not compare two different graphs of unrelated units and properties.
No raising temperature can cause a temperature collapse by melting fresh water deposits and diluting the selenium concentration in the ocean. Ocean currents are responsible for heat distribution and are powered by a balance of fresh-salt water concentrations. Too much fresh water and the currents stop thus cooling the planet in some regions.
I know I'm replying to a really old post, but can you show me where they admit they were wrong? I've seen their 'arguments' (such as that ridiculous graph shown by the weatherman) be debunked by real scientists, and it's nice to hear that P&T actually admit when they're wrong. I just wanna see them do it.
@jtbovis penn and teller are typically extremely liberal. i've noticed however, that anything where money is involved immediately turns them ultra conservative.
@StegosaurusGaming That's because Penn and Teller don't fit into the Left/Right paradigm promoted by the Republican and Democratic parties: they are Libertarian.
Mass Media / Science - some people don't know the difference
Mass media = Sensationalism to SELL stuff
Science = Observation and the testing of hypothesis to LEARN stuff
Al gore (a politician) or mass media (trying to sell you stuff) are irrelevant -- so is John Coleman (who has a degree in JOURNALISM - not science) and Penn and Teller (who are magicians)
Not once here was a SCIENTIST asked anything -- the majority of them say we're in trouble.
whats sad is my friend moved into the city with hippies and has a bigger green attiude now he doesnt eat meat because it is all so enviromentally bad except kangaroo meat which has the lowest carbon emision i said to him why does he eat that he said "what will i say to people" he was worried what people were thinking
Sometimes I wonder why people are so radical about this issue. They either drown themselves in "eco-guilt" (I didn't know the word until now) or deny the whole process of human-induced climate change. The thing is: global warming is happening and it is fueled by human emission. Denying it is, to quote P&T, bullshit, it is ignoring what science proves and what is a logical result of emission of greenhouse gases. That's physics. But what these "hippies" talk is unscientific and, well, bullshit.
the science indicates that only a portion of global warming is due to CO2. farming, urbanization, the sun, natural cycles, etc. have a bigger effect. The eco movement has been taken over by the politicos with anti-capitalist agendas and that is what they push without being honest about it.
lol good job p&t. I find it very fun when I meet people that are environment nuts and global warming freaks and proceed to tell them they are the dumbest people on the planet. My favorite part is when I ask them to show me the proof and they either just stare at me or start stuttering about about what "someone" told them. Morons
I would really like to know where that data comes from at 4:45 because if you look at the world mean temperature graph on wikipedia, it is very different, and the same goes for the sunspot data. So the question is which data is the real raw data, and which has been systematically transformed, and for what reason?
A weatherman? A fucking weatherman? That's their "expert" that is supposed to stand up against the hundreds of peer-reviewed scientific studies demonstrating climate change?
They should be embarrassed. In every episode, they grill their victims for their lack of scientific backing. Now that they're taking the side with zero scientific/academic credibility, there's suddenly no time for talking about the scientific literature...
You're my hero. Because you don't let the fact that you know nothing about a very technical topic stop you from arguing about it. What are YOUR qualifications that enable you to deny something that is accepted by the majority of experts?
Indeed. X3 Oh and sorry singedrac, I meant to hit reply to yours and missed, twice. rofl. And to you, in the other episode they said they wanted to say it was BS but didn't have the information yet.
Well of course. But remember that we are talking about 2 different things here. 1) Global Warming. This can be debated since their is science on both sides. You could see it as we give an impending impact to the earth's climat (which we do in some way) but that on the other side of the debate you can see that "Global Warming (+ cooling)" is an inevitable climat chage that goes back and forth history vise. The only thing that would change is that we make this shift of climate faster.
2) And this one is what it's about in this episode. "Eco Guilt"! (Not intirely all about Global Warming per say). This Eco Guilt is built upon the mixture of ideology's such as "Doing the right thing" and "Doing something that feels satisfying". When these 2 exists within the so called "Belifes of Science" you can see that people will do pretty much to do "the right thing" without actually trying to find out what the right thing to do is. But in this debate it is hard since there is science
on both sides. So, it's really more of having different opinions at this point than actually having 100% facts against the other part of the debate.
So to make this easier to understand. You must be able to see that there is no way at this point to either dismiss or fall 100% for Global Warming "End of the world crap" since we still don't really have all the facts. + There is a difference between "Global Warming" and "Eco Guilt" debate! One is science and one is more of a feeling by
and what do they do? they show two sides of an issue and when one contradicts, its bs? they are doing this show for money, they are puppets.
yeah, never mind two million people dying each year from air pollution and fish too toxic to eat, while saying "green is bs". and someone had to give up their forest, so they can waste paper for this show.
and if they would be smart, they would know that email from al gore's secretary is one of those automated emails, instead of taking it seriously.
Well. Doing it by the "Eco" books would not exactly be the best way either you know. If we would remove all Non-Eco food products right now then 1/3 of all people in the world would not eat. Secondly, It's not "Green is BS" it's "Eco Guilt is BS". "Eco Guilt" is about sending a message to people that they are ruining the world by NOT being a part of the Eco culture. Yet, there is science on both sides. Thia is alot like the time you paid for religious sins during 13-14th century.
And you might say "No, Global Warming is real!". But think about this; how much money do you think the world in general make by bombarding with 1 sided messages? (You said BS made money, so from that perspectiv it wasn't too hard to think about money) Don't get me wrong. If you want to be a person whom works for the "Eco" movment that's ok. But don't think that it is ok to abuse Fear and Guilt to force people to believe in what you believe in.
don't be silly, noone in the USA gives up forests to have paper, they have huge farms for that. the US has MORE forested land now than 20 years ago. in the third world countries, forest is cut down for farms so they can feed themselves. It's the eco nuts that are causing millions of deaths in Africa by keeping them from modernizing.
wtf is wrong withamericans that they never want to take responsibility for their actions? why all the excuses no 10-12th country in the world?

Burning (waste) of resources and the release of toxic or climate changing emissions most certainly does have environmental impacts. Also those graphs the weatherman used were unrelated. You have to graph emissions with respect to avg temp change, not compare two different graphs of unrelated units and properties.
daiitokumyouou899 2 years ago 2
So if the temperature goes up, it's global warming. If the temperature goes down, it's ALSO global warming. Wow, sounds scientific.
fluff125 2 years ago
@fluff125
Hm...wow nice strawman.

Thanks :)

@jtbovis penn and teller are typically extremely liberal. i've noticed however, that anything where money is involved immediately turns them ultra conservative.
StegosaurusGaming 4 months ago

I think eco-fad people are ridiculous too

@BeondaPale Penn and Teller don't do the research, they simply present it.

Schensue 2 years ago
the science indicates that only a portion of global warming is due to CO2. farming, urbanization, the sun, natural cycles, etc. have a bigger effect. The eco movement has been taken over by the politicos with anti-capitalist agendas and that is what they push without being honest about it.
rationalCrash 2 years ago 3
I think it's cheaper (for most companies etc ) but in the long run more expensive to just deny all of it.....lol

lol good job p&t.

Hypocrites.

Says the moron who has al gore as his hero!
What qualifications does he have in regards to the myth of global warming?
moggott 3 years ago 16
@moggott
You're my hero. Because you don't let the fact that you know nothing about a very technical topic stop you from arguing about it. What are YOUR qualifications that enable you to deny something that is accepted by the majority of experts?

How odd. Other Bullshit! episodes claim global warming is real. :O
Heh, well they are entertainers. :D
singedrac 3 years ago
Ohh I get it. They're talking about the bullshit "green" industry of con-men that has risen up over this situation. That makes more sense.
singedrac 3 years ago 6
Indeed. X3 Oh and sorry singedrac, I meant to hit reply to yours and missed, twice. rofl. And to you, in the other episode they said they wanted to say it was BS but didn't have the information yet.
BaronVonTrout 3 years ago
Well of course. But remember that we are talking about 2 different things here. 1) Global Warming. This can be debated since their is science on both sides. You could see it as we give an impending impact to the earth's climat (which we do in some way) but that on the other side of the debate you can see that "Global Warming (+ cooling)" is an inevitable climat chage that goes back and forth history vise. The only thing that would change is that we make this shift of climate faster.
ProdigyBigBoss89 3 years ago
2) And this one is what it's about in this episode. "Eco Guilt"! (Not intirely all about Global Warming per say). This Eco Guilt is built upon the mixture of ideology's such as "Doing the right thing" and "Doing something that feels satisfying". When these 2 exists within the so called "Belifes of Science" you can see that people will do pretty much to do "the right thing" without actually trying to find out what the right thing to do is. But in this debate it is hard since there is science
ProdigyBigBoss89 3 years ago
"Do [anything]" Sorry, missed that one
ProdigyBigBoss89 3 years ago
on both sides.
One is science and one is more of a feeling by
ProdigyBigBoss89 3 years ago
the mixture between the faith in science and the faith in doing the right thing (which in this case is based on politics and science).
ProdigyBigBoss89 3 years ago
actually, I heard a report that the maximum predicted height from the icecaps melting will be 3 feet...
which will only cause problems if you started off below sea level...
vactrox 3 years ago
and what do they do? they show two sides of an issue and when one contradicts, its bs? they are doing this show for money, they are puppets.
yeah, never mind two million people dying each year from air pollution and fish too toxic to eat, while saying "green is bs". and someone had to give up their forest, so they can waste paper for this show.
and if they would be smart, they would know that email from al gore's secretary is one of those automated emails, instead of taking it seriously.
HolySpringRolls 2 years ago
ProdigyBigBoss89 2 years ago 2
And you might say "No, Global Warming is real!". But think about this; how much money do you think the world in general make by bombarding with 1 sided messages? (You said BS made money, so from that perspectiv it wasn't too hard to think about money) Don't get me wrong. If you want to be a person whom works for the "Eco" movment that's ok. But don't think that it is ok to abuse Fear and Guilt to force people to believe in what you believe in.
ProdigyBigBoss89 2 years ago
don't be silly, noone in the USA gives up forests to have paper, they have huge farms for that. the US has MORE forested land now than 20 years ago. in the third world countries, forest is cut down for farms so they can feed themselves. It's the eco nuts that are causing millions of deaths in Africa by keeping them from modernizing.
