I love this dance/song. I am learning about Egypt in my TAG class. My teacher showed us this video. We saw who was the best dancer. One dude could do the exact dance!
When I was a kid I listened to his concert 8 TRACKS over and over. He changed it all. The first big concert comedian. (Friends have said he's an ass in real life though.)
@cosdown what???? every move he makes is funny. This was done at the time that the king tut exhibit was new and traveling all over - he was the greatest comedian of that time - and I think the first king tut was done in full costume on saturday night live -
how someone can find this not funny i do not know.
To those that don't understand why this is funny. In 1979, every school kid in America was taken on a field trip to see all the things discovered in King Tuts tomb. There was HUGE lines to get in to the exhibits. I'm guessing you are too young to get the cultural reference of this song.
@Volcanic9 wait... does that mean you think the majority of comedy TODAY is funny? Because today all you have to do is show animated people stabbing each other to get people laughing.
@icanhearyoubreathing oh, right ...as simple as that :P ...didn't recognize him there...strange, somehow the bit got even funnier with that information, anyway, thanks!
He said Henry Winkler because Henry Winkler came out behind him and was holding that tropical backdrop behind him at the end. He was announcing him and shook his hand at the end.
@elbowslapper you're right, you got me, i'm not a performer. i guess i shouldn't criticize steve martin's wacky zany hilarious performance as being fucking stupid then should I
Saw him do this in his next-to-last ever stand up show on August 27, 1979 at Carowinds. I was 15 and went with my best friend, who was also a Steve Martin fan. One of the greatest nights of my life, and my best friend is STILL my best friend 32 years later!
i was listening to internet radio and they played the oldie song about Muhammad Ali Theme Song Black Superman---and it reminded me of the King Tut song by Steve Martin---really enjoyed watching---funny and you can dance to it too :)
@xar51 Who the hell listens to what Opie and Anthony have to say? They are nothing but idiotic, childish fools. And if you are going to try to insult someone, at least use words you know how to spell.
King Tut exhibit was a really big deal & Elvis hadn't been dead long. Great parody of both "kings" - concert in white suit & guitar but with "Egyptian styling."
"They'd line up just to see him."
"Rockin' for a mile."
"The ladies loved his style."
"He gave his life for tourism."
The original Memphis is in Egypt, don't cha you know....
What I think people would do well to remember is that this came out in 1979 . . . . the year the King Tut exhibit came to New York. It was absolutelty a frenzy. This song marks that, and it's not saying anything about Egyptian culture or politics.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow

After he'd sworn never to sing that song again, he walked off the stage.

He knew exactly what his audience wanted and gave it to them.
