I'm a Drummer and I've watched all this guys video's, he makes good sense gives good advice and he's a good drummer. I have noticed lots of negative comments from would be drummers and unfortunately it seems to be normal for drummers to give other drummers a hard time and I reckon that sucks!
I feel like Expert Village videos are sarcastic videos towards people who ask dumb questions. like "How to hold drum sticks", or "how to play faster."
he teaches the technique very differently. not necessarily wrong....but it sort of goes against...what i think many people are taught. grip with thumbs, dont use middle finger?
@Zergikun A video of me using better technique would be irrelevant because I didn't say I could do it better. By simply comparing this man's technique with more professional drummers, I came to the conclusion that this man's technique is far from good.
I keep hearing all these people saying, "Thumbs down" and "pinkies in". Does it really matter how you hold your hands? If you can play you can play. Same with guitar. It doesn't matter how you do it as long as you can do it.
@HumanGuitarist Yeah but when you're teaching you should use a more accepted technique... I mean pianists don't really have to use 5 fingers to play a scale but they should teach students how to use proper fingering either way... Same for drums.
Expertvillage is pulluting the whole training sections on Youtube. They are all over the the place like a weed trying to destoy the good crop. Very annoying.
@kentsmedblom I'm a drum teacher and stumbled on this video, and looking at the comments... To alleviate some confusion. It has nothing to do with how the pinky looks for the audience. If you have the proper control, all the fingers should make contact with the stick. The roll is a matter of form and relaxation. No disrespect to Jason's example above. His closed roll sounds great, but I imagine it would "feel" better without using the squeeze or tension he mentions. Hope this helps.
@jfenichel A lot of people keep pinkeys out for finger control but if your using all your fingers you would have more control, with double strokes too. plus the pinkey being closer to the turning point of wrist.
when you guys hold the sticks... dont hold the with your pinkies or anything coming off of it drastically, it gave me a sist in my wrist and i had to go through alot of stuff... so when you guys think all this "technique" is for nothing, you think absolutly wrong...
yeah, I notice that now. Van Williams from Nevermore also takes his fingers off, but I can hear how his diddle quality suffers, even on the albums (when he rolls on the ride).
I've been in a world champion drumline for 4 years, so I've been trained to hear all the minor faults and identify all the technique issues. I can't help but get irritated when someone teaches something the wrong way. But even I still let things like this slip in my regular set playing.
you're not supposed to grip the stick with the back fingers for a press roll - they will interfere with the natural rebound/buzz. Otherwise you are right.
If you pinch the stick with your fulcrum, you cut off the stick's bounce. If you hold on with equal pressure on all your fingers, you maintain a firm grip while allowing the stick more freedom from the fulcrum. This allows you to buzz longer per stroke, and it'll sound better when you buzz in the middle of the drum.
Free your fulcrum, use all your fingers, and pump the forearms up and down. (I wish I could demonstrate)
I've always been told to let go of back fingers and just use thumb/index. I'm not saying you're wrong by any means - you're probably better at buzzing than I am. To keep the sticking from "dying" you regulate the fulcrum pressure to keep it buzzing. But your way sounds like it would cut down on the muscle tension in the hands but it just sounds awkward.
yeah, it takes getting used to, and it is easier to buzz while pinching the fulcrum. But if you're able to get it down using all your fingers, it feels much better, and you can go for a lot longer without getting tired.
For short quick burst, I've caught myself many times pinching my fulcrum, but for longer more dynamic buzzes, it's better to use all fingers.
@albinochase most of your playing will come from your wrists, but if you're doing fast rolls or buzz rolls it's impossible to maintain good sound and speed with just wrists.
I've come from a 4-time WGI World Championship drumline, and we used forearm for fast/buzz rolls. There is some wrist and fingers used to implement the diddles, but the power comes from the arms.
RLRR LRLL and R L R L R L R L as fast as you can, use 8th note spacing first to help build speed and muscle memory then hit the 16th notes and increase speed.

YOU NEVER TAKE ANY FINGERS OFF THE STICKS!!!!
Less fingers = less controll = less sound = less technique = more stress on the fingers you ARE using = sore fingers = all bad
:( they need to rename their franchise - Expert Village is pretty misleading
TheUltim8Apocalypse 2 years ago
it's personal preference.
some of the best drummers in the world have ways of gripping that might not make sense in the first place.
look at mike portnoy - i believe he slips into a modified two-finger french grip on his right hand at times?
