Those old Yamaha's like the one Carlos is playing will sustain for days because of the weight and that piece under the bridge

that I believe is solid brass.

This one didn't have that brass plate under the bridge. The sg2000, which was designed with the help of Santana, had it. The sg2000 is an upgraded sg175 (the one is this video), according to some of the Santana's specs plus the research of Yamaha. Look for adds on google and you'll see how they were constructed...pieces of art!!!

right now there are a sg175 and a sg3000 and a few sg2000 (re issues though) for sale on ebay. SG175, like sg3000, had no brass plate under the bridge, also the sg175 has abalon bindings on top (see the first seconds of this video), similar to sg3000. sg2000 has only the typical white bindings ala Les Paul. Those are the most visible differences, pickups are different too. Dunno about sg175, but sg2000 has alnico5 and sg3000 has Spinex, that I tyhink are alnico2. Hope this helps.

Can you not see the man turning toward his amp at 55 secs trying to make it sustain! But it did not work in that instance when he got harsh feedback instead! Every time he sustains, he positions himself at a certain place in front of the amp! You can see him do it every time in the video!

He says that before the gig, he finds the place on stage in front of his amp where the feedback resonates at the right frequency to sustain indefinitely (forever). He then marks the spot with some tape, and when he wants to sustain a note he stands there and turns his body until the guitar is in the perfect place to sustain. That is why when he sustains a note, he does a little moving as possible.

Santana never used pedals except for a delay, a wah pedal and in this case, chorus! His tone is all guitar + amp most of the time.

Pedals are a cluster fuck! Why would you buy an expensive ass boutique tube amp and hang a bunch of shit solid state pedals on it? Unless you have a specific need for an effect, like whah, phase, chorus or delay then pedals are stupid! Especially for distortion! I don't want that bullshit coloring my tone! Sorry!

His PRS tone has been fucked up for a very long time! The old 70's Santana tone is superior to that PRS bullshit! However, recently his PRS tone has been improving. I think its just the way he dials his tone in! Over time his preferences change and you notice a difference in his tone.

I think he underwent a long period were he tried to emulate the old Clapton "Woman Tone" or the "Brown Sound" where all the fucking treble is rolled off! The "Woman Tone" is shit IMHO!

You know,,,,I read an article about Carlos set up and it actually had an Ibanez Tube Screamer in there. Now that threw me completely off considering he is using a very expensive amp that can get you just about any type of overdriven sound possible. To me Tube Screamers suck.
