@aardvaark069 - whoa whoa ... hold on ... you must understand. At that time, I highly doubt that anyone in that audience had ever seen such a singer of religious music. They are not bored, but spell bound, & it shows on their faces. I am not a religious person, nor do I subscribe to Ms. Mahalia's belief's, but it doesn't matter. She is miraculous nonetheless, & one doesn't need to get up & act crazy to appreciate her. She leaves me in tears, & the audience to! :)

This is at a cathedral (Lutheran?) in Sweden in the summer of 1969. It's name is recorded in "Just Mahalia, Baby," and I can't remember.

never said it was ONLY singing.... mahalias SINGING is the centerpiece....i guess if you want to, you go so far as to say thats sound system, thats lighting. they all make the event. BUT miss mahalia is the reason people were there. i think it might be safe to say that not many came to see the lighting or hear the sound sytem.

Just imagine this fabulous voice with modern acoustics and real background in place of a skating organ. For me she was for gospel what Janis Joplin (without the southern comfort) was to the woodstock crowd me included though the Woodstock crowd was just as as enthralled by this voice.
