@fourcups1 And you sir, are an uneducated idiot that cannot appreciate the founding of you own heritage and an insult to your forefathers and those that molded this country into the great nation it is today. You are also an insult to the 650,000 men that died fighting for their rights to believe and defend such!
As an 18 year old back in 1990, I was floored by how good the PBS Ken Burns Civil War documentary was when it first aired that Summer. Shelby although not the main narrator added to the documentary superbly, that excellent southern accent and the way he explained things only come from people with a tremendous passion for what they do.
Generations will see this masterpiece and Shelby Foote will always be remembered as what he was.........a highly intelligent, classy southern gentlemen.
Its from a memoir of a civil war veteran Private Barry Benson( Army of Northern Virginia, 1880) it is familiar to most because it was the ending of the Mini series "the civil war" by Ken burns . It is even more moving with the stanza before the common quote that talks about Valhalla and the warriors death. As a veteran of four wars...it is even true in todays climate

@michaelhuye This is the last stanza of the final chapter of Ken Burn's Civil War series. It was written by private Barry Benson of northern Virginia army.
@jrnyjrny He would often say "as a Southerner" specifically . No one is saying he wasn't American and didn't represent that but specifically the South .
@haibane13 I think he was talking about those in history when he'd say, "... as a Southern ... " e.g., J/Davis, as a Southerner ... ", "As a Southerner, StoneWall J probably felt ... " i.e., not as in him speaking for himself 'as a Southerner'. ... ... ... ... ... ... Just my take. ... ... ... ... ... ... PS. The guy was soooo fre*kin' great my Yankee azz wants to lay claim to him too - can't ya tell!;) Go Shelby!!
SHELBY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! civil war class used to be boring until the Ken Burns series, cuz Shelby Foote was in it.
