I seldom hear the inner voices as clearly with other pianists and this elevates the performance for me to the sublime and brings Bach to life again.

In some of the middle dances, I think I hear somebody humming in the background, probably Gould.

Gould tends to hum a lot during recordings. I believe he stated that how loud he hums is inversely proportional to how happy he is with the piano he's using and that he can't help it, it's just automatic.
