I was born and raised in Newark during the civil rights riots of the 60's and the antigovernment hippie Vietnam war era. I left in 1975 for the Marines and came back four years later to marry and live with my family until I left for Florida in 2005. I have returned a few times and I am sadden that many of the people that made Newark what it was,....are now gone. I am also sadden by the condition of the areas north of the ironbound that were never rebuilt and are crime and drug ridden.
I was a long time resident of the Ironbound neighborhood. My Grandfather was born 1885 in the Ironbound and he said the name comes from the fact that you can not leave or enter the Ironbound without going over or under railroad tracks thus Ironbound.
the area was closed in by rail (iron)and in the 1800s had about 10 foundries (irish-scotsman) owned, also irish catholics & blacks dug the morris canal.
thanks for posting, i miss newark so much i started crying. im portuguese and i only been there 2 years tho but i truly consider newark my home land because, me, as an artist, recieved so much feedback from the population that it kind of shocked me at the same time to see how united the newark population is. im in portugal now, trying waiting and trying to get my green card so i can go back, cuz i miss it so much and i just love that city and section wich is newark ironbound. I grew up there!
I spent 10 years of my life living in union st.
I went to Lafayette st. school like so many other kids from that area.
Years later I came back to Spain where I live now.
I'd love to go back some day.
