This song that Bessie Smith sang (Black Water Blues) in 1927. I'm doing a home work question and just felt like asking for those who like this song, what is the most powerful element that Smith's voice conveys?

@LaughingFreaks
The song is called "Back Water Blues". Bessie Smith is the vocal singer, and James P. Johnson is playing the piano.

It is Backwater Blues, she says it in the song at about 2:22, and again after.

Black Water Blues is a rewrite of Black Snake Blues as sung by Victoria Spivey in 1926.

@stcyrist Black Snake Moan. And many blues are "rewrites" of other similar songs. Bessie Smith wasn't the copy of anyone. Any. One.

this is as genuine as it gets...Johnson lived through "The Jungles" musical era in Manhattan where this piano style most likely originated (pre-WWI)
