Hi Deadenear, Just how long have you been on a roof installing?I started out in high school working for my Dad who had been on the roofing game since 1952. I have seen everything over the years as far as shingle manufactures and their problems.Most reasons shingles don't last is because 80 percent of the roofers don't know how to nail in the correct area.As of June I will have been on the roof for 40 years and when you gain that many years you will understand who makes mediocre shingles.

Start by getting rid of IKO.Garbage shingle. They will only last 15 years. It's a builders budget shingle.Laminate seal will not hold up and granules come off prematurely.

10" stagger is for looks of  shingles(dimensional or randon pattern) mostly of roofers do 6" because is faster.

@2miangels , correct using a 10" spacing means the but end of the shingle is within 2" of the undernailed shingle which is a potental leak problem.

Why cut the tabs off the starter course to have the tar edge on the bottom when the Cambridge shingles already have tar on the bottom edge. You re just wasting time. You also only need a chalkline along the edges to ensure proper overhang. I agree that 5-6 inch stagger is enough, 10 inches on low slope maybe. Butt real roofers who like to avoid safety fines wear boots. Shoes are for girls. Just watch your treads dont dig in the warm shingles.

Do Not follow these instructions at all! What real Roofer wears Boots on the roof? Where was his safety equipment? Why was his foot in the gutter? 10" stagger? The stagger can be the same as the exposure of the shingle, which on Cambridge shingles is 5 7/8".
