No, thats just because you are so involved with this so called 'reality' that it would be impossible to think of other solutions for energy like water, wind, or how about chopping wood and burning it? How about junkyards to get your stuff? Change means change. You cannot uphold this luxory life and be indepentdent/sustainable. You have to give up certain things. Like the guy said: its about comprimising.
There are lots of reasons to go off the grid but most likely most will do it not to stop industry but change industry and just general way of thought of how to live together. If society doesn't give you the option you want, you have to create it yourself. But still this means comprimising, giving up certain things but gaining also.
What the Hell do people have against Electricity. This is not realistic because most people do not have the money and resources Les Stroud has at his disposal to afford this type of life it still takes money and Discovery channel is probally flipping the bill for all this.

I was fairly disappointed by this show. Living off the grid is not about spending a lot of money for a wind and solar system and putting it in your house. To make it work, you need to understand at least the basics.

Someone needs to say this: For every 100 males that secretly and not so secretly want to live some variation of the simplier life, 1 female (at best) genuinely wants to live this way. It might be proof that God really doesn't love us. Very few males (including myself) want to go out there alone, so we keep hoping to get lucky, meet that one in a hundred, like Scott Nearing or this guy did. I'm not being sexist, just honest. I've recently split from a woman that I hoped would "wake up".
You guys are nuts. Living in city is environmentally much more viable. Just imagine one million people doing what you've done, it would ruin HUGE areas of land, everyone having his own wells and such. Living there produces green house gases, wastes energy and social/mental retardation beyond anything acceptable.
oh hell yeah. the only thing that will really reduce CO2 emissions is urban living that's not reliant on fossil fuel energy. There's not enough land area on the planet to fit 100 people per acre in a rural setting let alone a family of four..
Imagine if you tried to understand what you just said? I'll let you think about that, i'll check later. Wow, and who says america is doomed...hey, that would be me!

I want to do this so bad! I am 18 yrs old and live in Ontario, and hopefully one day I can leave the grid too. Maybe outside of Ontario like far far in BC or somewhere..

Hey, I'll tell ya the truth: I do want to live like this. SERIOUSLY I mean, isn't there anyone annoyed about having clothes on sometimes? TRULY all things in this system held by the small group of men, the elite, have produced things that make us lose our sanity. TRULY! LOOK AT US

Wow amazing Idea living in the wilderness . NO BILLS

i had such a woman for a span of 9 years. we had such plans but she died from being attacked, raped and torn apart by 4 blacks in los angeles in broad day light! it's been 16 years since i lost her and i've never since met one like her. women like this are 1 in a million! he's a lucky man!
sorry for your loss. not to be a dick but i would kill every black person in LA if that happened to me. just goes to show that weapons could save lives. so everybody grab yourself a gun or even a knife and protect yourself... pepper spray is good too.
A few months ago I looked into solar power for my house. After running some general numbers I found that it would cost around $40-50,000 (US) to outfit my 2400sq ft home. That's about 35% of my property value! That's rediculous. Until solar cell and installation costs come down the average homeowner can never take advantage of getting off any grid. Hopefully with Les Stroud (I'm a huge fan), and others like him, more awareness and funding will be generated towards cleaner, cost efficient energy.
i could make that technology happen and i plan too. you will see more and more solar technology soon. it should also stimulate the economy because then people would not need to pay electricity or gas if they have an electric heater. its time to increase efficiency in this country!
This is silly. I like the idea of being off the grid, but it seems he is using more energy for just his family. This project feels too impulsive to be meaningful.
I like Les Stroud, but what is this "next big disaster" he keeps talking about? Could it be that this man is some Armageddon thinking type dude? Off the grid is cool but it isn't necessary to clean things up.
He's talking about an economic collapse. Witch means no money power or water. If you live in a suburb or city it would be devastating. But living with your own generated power means that if the power and water plants shut down you still have resources. And if you live away from any cities then you have less looters and vandals to deal. But that's IF an economic collapse happens, and unfortunately our economy is in the toilet. That's the "Big Disaster" he was talking about.
Les Stroud you will always be a hero to me!!! I am sad that there won't be anymore new survivorman, but you've risked your life showing all of us how to survive alone more than enough. Hope he lives a good life with his family
quitting while he's alive. As much as I'll miss the show, I support his choice. It sucks for us, but he did an amazing job, his show never faltered, never degraded, every episode is great. and thats how its gunna be forever.
Survivorman: permanent epicenes. I support that lol
i totally agree hes good at wut he does but i couldnt even do 3 days in a situation he gets himself into thats gotta suck... and ya it will suck it's my fav show
I respect him for that that just shows that he's doing it more for the love of the survival in the wilderness than the cash.I just hope they keep airing the show ya know in reruns or whatever.Thaanks for the reply utterlymoot.
yeah I'd start planing now. High school felt like yesterday, now I'm 22 and almost out of college. Feels like I did a ton of stuff, but I could have done more.... but Life is just a dream and can be changed at any moment.
I think Les and his family are doing something that many people should try to do regardless of where they live. I like the idea of being independent of the centralized systems. Rather than centralized power distribution, we have decentralized power with each home generating it's own sustainable electricity. To be able to carry on regardless of whether there is oil/gas/a power company or not is freedom in it's most basic form. Thanks again.
This is wonderful! I love Les and his show Survivorman. From the ultimate desire to preserve the natural world around me as well as to keep other living beings safe, and from the inspiration and knowledge I can get out of shows like this - I too will live this way someday. It's my goal in life. I'm just one person out of billions, but if even a few of us make an effort to sacrifice a more easy existence for a more natural one, it WILL have an impact on the Earth!

To do this, and feed a family of 4, you already need one hell of a big nest egg! Then after it's built, do you plan on feeding the whole family without any paycheck? Maybe you should resurect that pot garden....
I've lived in suburbs, city, and country. I like all of them I'm just saying for a young kid the switch from Urban/suburban to country style is tough. Though like grahamid said you'd probably start to like it after while.
Trust me if given the opportunity to survive away from civilization your instincts would kick in and you would be fine. I mean come on people lived like this for nearly a million years you would make it.
les is an amazing person being able to do his survivorman show. i go camping every year for about 2-3 days only and i already cannot stand living without electricity. i like his show because it's interesting and very educational. i learned alot of survivor skills from just watching it. keep up the good work les.
Les is getting ready for $500 a barrel oil way in advance of other folk who think they are surviving just because they have solar power and crank radios.
Thanks for posting this. I've been wanting to see it. Les is cool and this is pretty interesting, however, I worry about his kids. They can't possibly like living like that. They'll have no friends. They'll be isolated from everyone. :/
Hi. I did watch the entire thing before posting a comment. And it wasn't a negative comment. It was simply a statment of concern. If you watched the whole thing, you'd see that Logan (Les' son) actually expressed the same concern. He didn't want to be so far away from his friends. Believe me, I'm a big fan of Les. I wasn't trying to make a rude or negative un-informed comment.
Impressive and informative, but possibly more so, if you were able to achieve this within existing tract housing.

Going off grid does not have to mean living in the remote wilderness.
I have lived for 15 years off grid in a solar cabin I built myself. I garden, raise animals, hunt and fish for most of my food supplies.
I drilled my own well, solar composting toilet, and solar water heater and I have no house payments and no utility bills.
BUT I also have internet, antennae tv, cell phone and live 15 minutes from a good sized town.
You can see my off grid cabin by clicking solarcabin.

jezus. with all the money you've spent
(just within this video) you are more problem than solution.
i wish i could watch the whole thing, but it reeks of hypocrisy and BS.

Working with, rather than against, nature, is good for both people...and nature (after all humans ARE part of nature)

Thanks for posting these videos to YouTube.

Maybe you should resurect that pot garden....

for les and sue it might be fine to live out there, but i'd hate to be a young kid in that situation.

I've lived in suburbs, city, and country. I like all of them I'm just saying for a young kid the switch from Urban/suburban to country style is tough. Though like grahamid said you'd probably start to like it after while.

WOW you can afford healthcare these days!
Trust me if given the opportunity to survive away from civilization your instincts would kick in and you would be fine. I mean come on people lived like this for nearly a million years you would make it.
YBMAN1215 3 years ago
sounds fine but I wouldn't be able to sacrifice healthcare and education. Especialy when it comes to having children.

les is an amazing person being able to do his survivorman show. i go camping every year for about 2-3 days only and i already cannot stand living without electricity. i like his show because it's interesting and very educational. i learned alot of survivor skills from just watching it. keep up the good work les.

You should watch the entire part before you post a negative comment.
kryss119 4 years ago 2

If you can post the rest of this or tell me where to find it I would really appreciate it.
