I just can't believe your singing...and in tune while getting tattooed. You're just leaning there like 'yep i'm getting my tattoo and i'm singing along not even flinching'. I like that. Kudos, Hopefully when i get some traditonal work done (if i find the right tattooist) i'll be as relaxed as you are and just take the pain in my stride.
no outsiders can't and shouldn't have a pe'a.its only for samoan people, but now a days, the culture and the custom only for samoan people and certain family members now I see any young girls have them but don't know the meaning of the pe'a or malu.and most people make money of it thats not cool.......if you had a pe'a or malu know and understand the culture.
The malu actually originated after Samoa received the Soga'imiti . The story goes that two women wanted to prove that they too were tough and strong just like men so that is the meaning behind the malu . But the patterns and the Malu and the Tali Malu have a special meaning . Unfortunaly i do not know the meaning of the malu (the diamond behind the knee) but the Tali Malu is there to hold the Malu up , almost like the saucer with a tea cup . Each pattern has a different meaning .
girl i give you props!!...i dont think i would have been able to sing at all....all i could do was breathe & squeeze the heck out of my dads hand while I was getting mines done :/ lol Beautiful voices by the way :)

Dang...you ladies have some beautiful voices..I give you so much props for getting your malus. I myself have been longing to get my Pe'a...I just gotta save up..lolz. I remember when my dad got his back in early 80's...I think it was only $300. But I will get it in due time..smiles. Keep using them beautiful voices...smiles..and wear that malu with pride.
How awesome is it that you're SINGING while you're getting tatted!!!! Um I only have a lil tatt on my back and I was soooo not able to breathe...(let alone sing)...while it was getting done!!... MALO LAVA!!!
you and your sistahs have beautiful voices...I think I would have been screaming...you got skills to be singing while getting your tat! More props to you!
i remember constantly watching your video the week of me getting my malu just so i could get the pain out of my mind. lol. and it actually got me thru the process the day i got my malu done. lol. i just kept thinking of your video and song. hehe.
lol... so they are! i really thought they were POMS! they are good... for YANKS! i thought maybe i got them confused with ben fold's five but they're yanks too! oops - first rule of journalism... CHECK YOUR FACTS!
you know, it doesn't matter how much samoan you got in you, or whether you just have a little speech in the lingo, You got the malu all for the right reasons..
I dont get why your hated on,, but I hope for those who got a malu, i hope it was not just for the fashion..
we live all over the world now - nz, australia and hawaii but originally we're from south auckland HARD! in samoa, our family is from apia (tufuiopa) and afega.
Love this video. You all is straight crazy. lol Makes me more proud of being a Samoan. To get a traditional tat and sing your ass off at the same time is truly soldier. Take care girls!!
from what i've been told, back in the days, girls got it in their teens - usually the taupou who was supposed to be a virgin. i know i was way too old to get mine and i have 3 kids already but i want the tradition to continue so i did it anyway! i did this FOR my kids.
for both or just one leg? cuz one of my aunties took 9 hours for both legs.. and my other aunty took 4 and a half hours for one leg each cuz she got hers done over two separate days.
Way to go toughing it out AND making sweet music at the same time. I'm getting a tattoo soon and now I feel like a poseur with a mechanical needle! Nice.
being a student of the world, and a respect-or of different cultures, i wanted to get traditional tattoos from the places i visit. but i heard it was disrespectful to get those if you're not part of that culture, i would like love to get a traditional tat, but i wouldnt want to disrespect an entire culture. is this true?
there are haters out there - people hated on me for getting it but i didn't let that stop me.
i don't think it's what you do but HOW you do it. if you do it in the right way - learn what you're getting, what it means and show the proper respect then it's ok.
just out of curiousity, why would people hate on you for getting your malu seeing as that you're samoan? beautiful voice, by the way!! and congrats on finishing your malu too!
omg! people were full of hate! coz i'm only part-samoan, coz i don't speak samoan fluently, coz i don't live in samoa, coz they're religious and believe that the body is the temple of god and getting tattoos is wrong - all for their own stupid reasons or judgemental attitudes. like i said, i didn't let it stop me. it's a personal decision and for me, it was a spiritual one. now i feel connected to my great and great great grandmothers who also wore the malu. i carry the tradition on for my kids.
HEy WE SAW yOU ON THE SOLkRUSH ViDEO WiTH 3HOUSEsDOWN!! LOL WHy DiDNT yOU SiNG WiTH THEM? WELL HOPEFULLy yOU COME DOWN TO CA WiTH THEM SO WE CAN SHAkE yOUR HAND! LOL WE LUV yOUR VOiCE! TAkE CARE!

@DEMTOiLOLOsS so 3HD are coming back to HI n i'm on a mish to sing with them! gonna start a campaign using social media to get their attention and permission. hopefully it happens!
Good Job. My sister just had her malu done this year. I plan on making the commitment to have my pe'a done in about 2 yrs from now. My wife thinks its a bad idea since I have a health condition that may cost me my life if I do get it done...but I'll leave that in God's hands. Again Great Job.
"malo lava le onosa'i". No offence, but I actually laughed when I saw your clip (not in disrespect) but because most people would be singing a different tune if they were getting that done!!! "nice work"

yes, all three of us. i was supposed to have a friend as my soa but she pulled out (cough*CHICKEN!*cough) my sisters are both in this clip too - one playing the gat and the other filming - all singing!
man! wish i had thought of singing while i got mine done ... but instead i chose to lay there, listen to what the tufuga was playing on the stereo ... try to block out the tapping noise & smoke my lungs away!! muahahahaha!! malo le onosa'i suga!! xoxo
On you on Bebo, if so look up Fala Afamasaga, thats my page and its not private just in case you want to check out my sogaimiti...The tufuga that did mines is from falealili but resides in New Zealand...auckland area...
we are from all over. i came from hawai'i, my other sis (playing the gat) came from new zealand and my sis that is filming came from australia. but new zealand is home to us all!
it was special that we were able to come together in samoa for this bonding experience.
as a soga'imiti - you know what it takes to go through this ordeal! malo lava to YOU!!
You guys need to sing a song that grandma knows...lol...try a track from penina o le taifau or punialavaa...lmao jokez, jokez, Malo lava le finau ma le onosai...fa'apea foi ma le fa'amalosi...I know the feeling, I myself have sogaimiti...Pride is forever linked in our culture.
haha... oh we sang A LOT of songs that day! Samoan songs, Fijian songs, Maori songs, palagi songs... all our cultures were represented that day!!! Lots of church songs too - just for Nana!!! We just didn't post them all here... too many!!!
wow.. so can i just say that you are damn hardcore for this? lol.. mad props to you, girl.. i could only wish for that much courage.. lol getting a malu and still singing? you go, girl!!
DAYUM...only samoans can be in intense pain, bleeding, numb, bruised, lay on their side, basically having some beat the hell out of your leg and yet ya'll still SING IN 3 PART HARMONY!!!!! malo lava teine samoa moni...oi, ma oe fo'i tina!
Awesome! Yes, they have taught many, MANY people over the years!! They are teaching a brass band right now in Afega, Samoa. My grandfather still plays his 2 pu everyday!!! At 87 years young!!!!
DAMNNNNNNNNNNNNNN THAT WAS HELLLLLA bOMb!!! WOW!! My SiSTERs GOT THEiRs DONE TOO bUT WE WERE jUST PLAyiNG A OLD SCHOOL CD AND THE OLD PEOPLE WERE SiNGiNG bUT yALL WAS STRAiGHT HAViNG A jAM SESSiON!!! THATs WASSUP!!! GET EM GiRLs!!!
well thats what its all about aye...my cousin said when she had hers she cried during the ceremony and when the ka pe'a was doing the whole ritual she just felt proud...and if you can sing through yours im hoping i have the ability to just sit there and handle it lol but thanks and mean voice by the way :)
Sister your sounding great as ever. How da heelll did you sing through the pain... You go my sista. I'm glad that you are doing good now. I tried to call you. Love and miss you...
I just can't believe your singing...and in tune while getting tattooed. You're just leaning there like 'yep i'm getting my tattoo and i'm singing along not even flinching'. I like that. Hi what's the true meaning of the Malu ?
80Leota 3 months ago
@80Leota
