This video's title is extremely misleading. The elephant wasn't scared of the tiger, it just didn't want to waste its time or its energy with an unnecessary fight. Not because you're scared, you just don't want to get scratched. If something had agitated the elephant, the tiger would've been killed. And most likely very quickly.

To be honest it depends on the experience, size, age, and strength etc. of the animals, a tiger is bigger than most people think, it could seriously injure vulnerable parts of the elephant like the trunk, throat or head or possibly even kill it, whilst an elephant could seriously injure a tiger with its tusks, trunk or incredibly large legs, and could also kill it, but in this case neither of them needed anything from the other animal. So neither of them risked death for something not needed
lets not forget that the bears tigers are hunting are not the grizzlies that americans are familiar with. full grown male grizzlies can weigh over 1500lbs and the large subspecies stand close to eight feet tall regularly. the tiger is hunting a much smaller version, the asian brown bear, still a grizzly but smaller.
tigers and elephants like to avoid confrontation, but in the case of an african bull elephant, if they have calves to protect they won't tolerate the presence of lions or tigers.
There r videos that shows lions leaving thier prey and running for life on seeing an aproaching elephant...but this one demonstrates the courage of the Tiger...eventhough the fight breaks out and tiger got killed,the elephant will hardly live for few hours as the Tiger's attack would be that powerful!

Elephants are more powerful than tigers, and a tiger is NOT going to bother with an elephant unless it has no choice. Its too dangerous for either animal to chance, it wouldn't make sense for them to fight and risk injury or death for no reason, they have instincts to avoid high risk confrontations like that.

@hustler2406; I think both animals are dangerous to each other! There are accounts of both animals fought eath other and both got injured or died. Recenlty, in south india(Kerala) wild elephant herd were coming out of the forest during nights and was destroying all crops in the nearby fields. And the officials this time did an innovative idea, they recorded tiger's roar and played continously during the night times. That worked. It kept away the elephants coming out of the forests( Sept 2009)

@wwwotherguy Like the Captainbeermanguy said already, there is a risk for both animals. For example the trunk of a elephant can easily be damaged by a tiger bite and a mutilated trunk is a grave injury as it makes it difficult to eat, drink and pick up things.
Also elephants don't need anything from tigers so even though they have better chances, they won't fight.

Its important to make the distiniction between an Asian Bull Elephant and an African bull elephant. The African Bull Elephant dosent live near Tigers, the Asian Elephant is smaller and less agressive. However, at about 7000 to 11,000 pounds it still can crush a bengal tiger with its tusks or by stomping it. But usually there is just standoffs these two animals will rarely engage in combat.

I saw a movie when I was a kid that was filmed in India. They set it up where a tiger jumped on an elephants back (though I don't know how). The tiger dug it's teeth and claws into the elephant. The elephant was able to knock it off and then crushed it to death. I remember the sound of the tiger's skull being crunched.
Of course an elepahant can't catch a tiger. It didn't run after it. The tiger attacked it and it defended itself. This movie was many years ago, but I don't see how it was faked. Of course a single big cat ordinarilly would not mess with an adult elephant, the filmakers probably try to set it up for the confrontation. As in Africa, I seen elephants chase away lions all the time but rarely get a chance to kill them.

They have been known to kill small brown bears resident to the parts of russia they inhabit, and if you are talking about the indian tigers, then the resident bear in India is the sunbear I believe? I could be wrong but the bear species outside of North America are much smaller, and it is unliker a tiger could kill the larger species of bears, like the Kodiak, Grizzly, or Polar bears.
I don't think a tiger would run from an African elephant, male or female. Also, a large male grizzly would probably fight off a tiger, I think. We'll probably never know for sure.

I did not say that the Tiger was "scared" of the Elephant, rather that the Tiger has no reason to quarrel with that animal. However, it would be foolish of me to say that it is impossible or for that matter that there are no cases in which a Tiger has killed an Elephant by whatever means. Though I would like to see some documentation of this before I am persuaded.

To be honest it depends on the experience, size, age, and strength etc. of the animals, a tiger is bigger than most people think, it could seriously injure vulnerable parts of the elephant like the trunk, throat or head or possibly even kill it, whilst an elephant could seriously injure a tiger with its tusks, trunk or incredibly large legs, and could also kill it, but in this case neither of them needed anything from the other animal. So neither of them risked death for something not needed

lets not forget that the bears tigers are hunting are not the grizzlies that americans are familiar with. full grown male grizzlies can weigh over 1500lbs and the large subspecies stand close to eight feet tall regularly. the tiger is hunting a much smaller version, the asian brown bear, still a grizzly but smaller.

There r videos that shows lions leaving thier prey and running for life on seeing an aproaching elephant...but this one demonstrates the courage of the Tiger...eventhough the fight breaks out and tiger got killed,the elephant will hardly live for few hours as the Tiger's attack would be that powerful!

Elephants are more powerful than tigers, and a tiger is NOT going to bother with an elephant unless it has no choice. Its too dangerous for either animal to chance, it wouldn't make sense for them to fight and risk injury or death for no reason, they have instincts to avoid high risk confrontations like that.

@hustler2406; I think both animals are dangerous to each other! There are accounts of both animals fought eath other and both got injured or died. Recenlty, in south india(Kerala) wild elephant herd were coming out of the forest during nights and was destroying all crops in the nearby fields. And the officials this time did an innovative idea, they recorded tiger's roar and played continously during the night times. That worked. It kept away the elephants coming out of the forests( Sept 2009)

@wwwotherguy Like the Captainbeermanguy said already, there is a risk for both animals. For example the trunk of a elephant can easily be damaged by a tiger bite and a mutilated trunk is a grave injury as it makes it difficult to eat, drink and pick up things.
Also elephants don't need anything from tigers so even though they have better chances, they won't fight.

Its important to make the distiniction between an Asian Bull Elephant and an African bull elephant. The African Bull Elephant dosent live near Tigers, the Asian Elephant is smaller and less agressive. However, at about 7000 to 11,000 pounds it still can crush a bengal tiger with its tusks or by stomping it. But usually there is just standoffs these two animals will rarely engage in combat.
But small and young Elephan calfs can be pray for an experienced Tiger

I saw a movie when I was a kid that was filmed in India. They set it up where a tiger jumped on an elephants back (though I don't know how). The tiger dug it's teeth and claws into the elephant. The elephant was able to knock it off and then crushed it to death. I remember the sound of the tiger's skull being crunched.

Of course an elepahant can't catch a tiger. It didn't run after it. The tiger attacked it and it defended itself. This movie was many years ago, but I don't see how it was faked. Of course a single big cat ordinarilly would not mess with an adult elephant, the filmakers probably try to set it up for the confrontation. As in Africa, I seen elephants chase away lions all the time but rarely get a chance to kill them.

They have been known to kill small brown bears resident to the parts of russia they inhabit, and if you are talking about the indian tigers, then the resident bear in India is the sunbear I believe? I could be wrong but the bear species outside of North America are much smaller, and it is unliker a tiger could kill the larger species of bears, like the Kodiak, Grizzly, or Polar bears.
