I bet to create this effect they have a human head replica with ears, and very sensitive microphones put inside the canals. Then they record the sound it makes while moving the matches around it and play back for us to listen.

I went for a demo of nuance speakers one time.. I sat in a room completely surrounded by speakers.. speakers all around, I closed my eyes and heard horses galloping by, a full band with drums trumpets and violins.. you could hear exactly which direction each instrument came from as if they were right in the room in front, beside, and behind me. I opened my eyes and the guy said ok now only these two speakers are plugged in. (front left and front right)

I had to hold my eyes closed with my hands because I almost couldn't bear keeping my eyes closed. While I may have found a new phobia of mine, make more of these please! They're so intense O.O

@Bocist yea, I went of to have a listen to the others. no offense but this one's the best out of the lot :p It had really nice sound quality and played with 3d sound much more than the others. When I closed my eyes it was like being interrogated in an empty black room (with the exception of one of those hanging lamps) by some guy crazy about matches. The whole interrogation picture in my head is probably what made it so tense. :)
