As another note to all the guitar players who see bass a simplistic instrument, yes it is one if you play simplistic music.... But if you want to play the harder hitting funky jazzie off the hitch stuff you really need to memorize pitch axis theory in a revolving motion of different keys and chord changes... So you may hear 2-3 notes per measure, but those 2-3 notes are quite pivotal notes.

dude stasik is ungodly as are all of the members of UM, I mean hes no Victor Wooten or Stanley Clarke but they are front men who play a backing instrument... As a funky, innovative, and solid pocket bass player stasik makes most conventional bassists piss their pants. I mean the ability to make up those lines on the fly and adapt to what ever is going on on the stage is a really hard thing to do, even with hand signals.. UM rocks hard.

I feel like a good bassist knows that hanging behind the focal point of the song is their job. I love Bass because it is so simplistic, its easy for everyone to hear you if you choose to play that way, but its more difficult to blend in.  Les Claypool is kind of an exception to that, I'm talking about MOST types of bands.
