That is a great question DaFreki! My answer would be that the hardwood abrades the surface of the chain. However, I would not really describe it as a scratch. Actually, in my opinion the hardwood polishes and brightens up the fine 0.999, sterling or gold metal. I have also used a hardwood drawplate with color anodized craft wire. The wire seemed to be untouched but had a brighter shimmer .
My x wife had the patients to plow through Sigurd's Saga's. I picked up a little from her. Very strange and fascinating. I was particularly enthralled by the story,s of men who could turn themselves into sea creatures and swim to other places. Another, favorite was the explanation settling a death feud and how it required 3 generations.
Thank you for providing clear instructions. I look forward to viewing parts 2 & 3. I hope to be creating within days to incorporate with my handcrafted jewelry.
What fascinates me was an exhibit in the National Museum of Iceland. They had samples of Viking knit found in Viking cremation sites. The samples were too small for jewelry. What they speculate is that they left home with long chains and clipped off sections to use as money.
I also noticed a necklace owned by King Tut at the Musée du Louvre In Paris had the exact same weave. It’s been around a lot longer than the Vikings.
Wow! It really makes sense that they'd cut off small pieces of silver to use as payment. The vikings traveled a lot, as you know, and in the Eastern Roman Empire, vikings even served as mercenaries. All the traveling might have contributed to spreading of viking knits and crafts. So, perhaps it's not "viking knit" after all, but something the vikings brought home from somewhere else. :)
I've just finished a Viking King's Chain and Viking's Queen Chain. Quite fun to make. :)
i love this video it is the only one that CLEARLY shows step by step how to start a viking knit . as soon as i can i will be investing in the other videos as i think they are very pretty and want one for my daughters wedding
Great video! I love the bit of history! Easy to follow and good photography. Thank you so much for taking the time and effort it takes to put together a good instructional video!
Hi Kary, I hope you check your You Tube often. I would like to make this chain for a project for my Silversmithing class, but am finding it difficult to find your Videos 2 and 3 that are supposedly available on your website. I do not see them listed. I need to complete the project by next Monday. I am in Kansas City, so unfortunately cannot take classes from you--but would love to!
Diving in through the crap being thrown about..... I absolutely enjoyed your tutorial. Being a knitter, this was totally understandable. I have seen pictures of the 'old' artifacts and have always wondered about what looked like a twisted knit stitch I-cord in yummy silver/gold metals. Thank you for your time and expertise. The kindergarten class members need just to go back to manners/ettiquette for a review. Lovely work.

Like many "instructional" video's, plenty of self indulgent wafffle...safety goggles...watch the cat dont get in the way, then a quick, blurry bit of actually how to do it....AND in this case, the guy tried to sell the remainding parts of the 'how to'. (what an a*ss). Promote your products/business yes, but utube aint for direct selling of video material.
An amateur'ly filmed, bad instructional video, from a greedy guy.
It's not perfect, but thanks to the visual, I can DO this now! This is a great basis for building off of. ( I never just use only one source anyway.) There are hundreds of websites that will help with other aspects of this. So he doesn't have to cover EVERYTHING there is to know. And yes. I"m sure he would like you to take the class too, but he was nice enough to show us this much for FREE.
AWESOME video!! thanks so much for these instructions. I have the books and many paper instructions, but there is nothing like seeing it done in person. Thanks so much, I look forward to Episode 3... hopefully soon! :)
Later today I'll be out getting some wire and possibly some polymer clay to make a viking Pendant. I'm in the SCA and this will work great with my Viking persona.
I went to see the 2nd and 3rd but one has to pay, is that the correct site for this particular vk chain? Thanks!

Doesn't a hardwood draw plate scratch the wire face?

I agree I like the double too. I was tried a triple knit. It didn't really make that much difference. It just made the weaving harder.
One thing that is cool about the single is that you can do a twist DNA type effect.

@troutstail ya it's awesome to add in a few highlight colors. on the overlay. did that for my grandmother's christmas present.

What exactly is SCA? Thanks! Juli ;)

SCA = Society for creative anachronism.
Archaic food, dress up, stick fights in full plate armor, folk music and all that type of thing. You know, renaissance fair stuff.
