  • This is a really great movie, and the score is well played and better sung. I enjoy it, and the libretto is not so bad. Mozart will be happy (and Schikaneder too, I think)

  • what a pity it is not in German

  • I love how the bird looks side ways after he plays.

  • i'm asian

  • Mozart würde sich im Grabe umdrehen, wenn wer diesen us-amerikanischen Schwachsinn sehen würde.

  • @Bhupha On the contrary...I think he would be quite pleased at this imaginative production.

  • I have seen many versions of Die Zauberflote but I've never heard such amazing singing. The orchestra is brilliant too. It's not too slow, not too fast. Absolutely amazing. Thank you so much for sharing.

  • This is a nice movie. I don't mind too much that it's in English and it's very well enunciated. My biggest complaint is that all the music is played very fast. "Das Klinget So Herrlich" (part of "Schnelle Füße, Rascher Mut") is such a wonderful melody but is ruined by the speed at which it's played. They also should have kept the racism and the sexism and some very important lines of dialog have been changed or omitted, which only really matters if you're into studying this opera.

  • PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE MAKE THIS FILM AVAILABLE IN THE U.S.!

  • PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE MAKE THIS MOVIE AVAILABLE IN THE U.S.!

  • Interesting interpretation of Mozarts masterpiece and the first time for me to watch in english.

  • Iv been looking for this Movie for sooo long....Thanx so Much :D :) :D

  • aw, Papageno's suck a dork XD

  • il gico della bottiglia...? o.o"

  • it's the smoke monster!

  • personlly I've never liked Tamino's entrance...but the 3 women after him is always a hilarious aria.

  • Even in English I still can't understand it very well :P

    This is interesting though.

  • Nice version.

But it's a pitty because the Mozart-Schikaneder's masterpiece in english sounds PATHETIC.

  • @arageneralbelgrano Maybe, but the text is much more poetic in English than in German, doesn't it?

  • @arageneralbelgrano 100% with u, the only advantage it has is that i can understand what they are saying...execution on the piece 0% sounds worst then a Broadway musical

  • @arageneralbelgrano On the contrary, this libretto is far superior to Schikenader's.You just suffer from the sock of actually understanding the words.

  • @HConstantine i totally agree. i know the original by heart (i´m german myself) and while i love it, i can´t help noticing some of the rather silly twists and inconsistencies (not to mention the funny misogyny!). this version is a very gentle transformation which preserves all the good parts, gives the plot a new universal direction and highlights the character relations (friendship tamino/papageno, antagonism sarastro/queen, the romantic/funny couples).

  • okey, that guy is pretty funny

  • "if only girls were more bird-brained" haha

  • To all who are against abortion - your humanisms name is ExoticGawdess.

    Loon.

  • Tomorrow I'm going to make my own nun's hat and see if I can fly.

  • give me some of that ole time religion

    LOL

    2:50

  • Thank you soooo much! Amazing!!!!!

  • I love this! :D

  • I'd love to see Branagh versions of other Mozart operas. Any upcoming projects?

  • idk why, but what if people actually sang to get rid of poison gas...i just had a weird picture in my mind lol.

  • YAYYYY! PAPAGENO!

  • Flying nuns!!!

  • i think they're nurses. or some people from the red cross... I keep seeing the red cross symbol

  • Is it just me, or is Joseph Kaiser dead sexy?

  • @Arnarkusaga it´s definitely not just you...;-) nicest tamino i´ve ever seen!

  • not nuns.... just nurses?

  • I love the translation. My students can understand and thus enjoy this version much better. The singing isn't as good as some other productions but still great enough for me to share examples of great opera singing. I love how the 3 ladies are are all nuns dressed fabulously in white and then show a little bit of their slutty side. Hysterical! Mozart would have loved it!

  • papageno's so cute, love his expression at 6:45-6:47

  • their nuns how can they love him if their nuns? wa wa what!? how can they show cleavage if their nuns!?

  • @razack0404 That's the point, they're not really nuns it's just to get Tamino to believe the Queen further making them look like the good guys.

  • I will write it in the next letter for my father.

good guys there in g.b. !

  • super super super

  • Dude. Awesome.

  • I kind of like this version, above all Papageno. Whereas, Pamina, the three boys and the Queen..... oh well not much. They sound a little too sharp and squeaky. Personally I think the translation is not so bad, but obviously it spoils the musicality of the German version.

I'd say I like Bergman's film much more!

  • joseph Kaiser is wonderful in this!

  • in dutch is best

  • Dutch? :P

  • I DONT LIKE IN ENGLISH

  • Me too somewhat.

  • in english, of all this version, all the movie

  • truly? How many acts does the opera have? (It's been several years since I saw the opera).

  • i'd like to have the lyrics in english too, could you send it? thanks in advance!!

  • is the entire movie uploaded?

  • I think the german lyrics match the music better. The translation is often hard to understand...

  • i think it works fine. and actually, even though i´m german, i don´t understand all the words of the original if i don´t have the libretto to read along ...;-)

  • FirstLifeFan: For English-speakers like me, learning German from old operas can be dangerous. "Frau" is now the appropriate word for "wife", whereas "Weib" (used in Die Zauberflöte) is now pejorative. I learned that the hard way. Also, words like "Knäbchen" and "seist" have become archaic. I never did find out what the latter means. How is, "sag mir wer du seist" different from, "sag mir wer du bist?"

  • podx990: "seist" in this case is just archaic, as you say. here, it means exactly the same as "bist". technically it´s the conditional mode of the verb. for a native speaker, the german libretto here reads old-fashioned, which it is, but easy to understand nonetheless. i can imagine the differences must be hard to spot for a non-native speaker.

  • Cool. So, it's kind of like the difference between, "tell me who you are" and, "tell me: who might you be?" - not much difference lol. THANKS!

  • as far as i can tell, you nailed it. don´t mention it, i love languages!

  • isn't seist Konjuktiv I in this case?

  • It is not different. "seist" is very very theatralic, more then by Shakespeare.

  • Mozart in Heaven On December, 5 of 1791 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Entered heaven, as a circus artist, doing extraordinary acrobatics riding a miraculous white horse. Astonished, the little angels was saying: What happened? What did not happened? Unseen melodyes have flyed on the Supplementary Superiors lines of the stave. A moment was suspended in the ineffable Contemplation. The Virgin kissed him on the forehead. And, since then, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was the younger of angels M. Bandeira
  • do somebody know where i can get the lyrics?

  • German, or English?

  • this movie is fantastic but the "nein nein" part is not the same if you sing "no no" :/

  • I notice that too; it just doesn't sound as nice as "Nein, nein, das kann nicht sein." Oh well, I found the music to be quite nice in this movie, although I like "das klinget so herrlich" played slower than is usually done; it's such a nice melody.

  • Thank you so much for this!!! I love this movie so much, but living in the U.S, you can't find it anywhere.

  • what is this movie called? :-)

  • The Magic Flute! :)

  • sorry I clicked negative on your comment by accident! Should be +4!

  • No problem :)

  • @DreiKnaben1 Well, in Canada (Quebec) it's only available since April 13 2010!!
