I have been both a Scottish (piob mhor) AND Irish (uilleann) piper for many years. My main teacher on the Irish pipes admired the gaide and indeed all the Balkan pipes. He collected them and played them well. He also spoke some of the Balkan tongues. I like them too, though I don't know the language.

The bulgarian "kaba gaida" bagpipe is simply magnificent... it has been saved through the ages... Bulgaria was under the yoke of Turkey for five centuries and the Turks were humiliating the bulgarians. However, so has the culture saved through the ages... therefore is Bulgaria unique... because it was behind the times...
