I've read loads of comments about a lot of the songs from the 80's, and about it all being a fashion disaster, that is more true now than it ever has been.
the 80's were a powerful era of music/politics/design/technology none before or since has come close to even equaling what happened then.
@paradoxstate Yes! Yes! Yes! And the powers that be have spent the last two decades trying to discredit it and obliterate all legit memory of it. That period - really the late-seventies/early-eighties - was an accident; regular people were never meant to have so much fun and freedom, and end up gaining so much power (personal, monetary, cultural). The difference between the eighties and this past decade is like night and day. Sad!

Wow, they really sucked all of the funky rhythm out of this one. Really, the drums in the Shirley Ellis original are great and here they're entirely flat. I wouldn't be surprised if they're a drum machine. :(
lol. I remember this song when I was 6 or 7 and funnily enough, I was singing it with my 11 year old the other day. I will have to show her this now :D
it's from a jump rope song. That's how I remember it anyway.
It goes:
3,6,9 the goose drank wine. the monkey chewed tobacco on the street car line, the line broke the monkey got choked and they all went to heaven in a little row boat. My mama told me if I was good she'd buy me some candy, that's what she told me.
Love the song, but they weren't later known as Bananarama. Bananarama were Sara Dallin, Karen Woodward and Siobhan Fahey. The Belle Stars were Stella Barker, Sarah-Jane Owen, Miranda Joyce, Penny Leyton, Judy Parsons.
I loved the Belle Stars when I was a child. I have their album kicking about the loft somewhere. I need to look out for it if its on CD. Brings back sweet memories.
Yes, Belle Stars did "Sign of the Times", which was their big hit. This "Clapping Song" was also released by Pia Zadora, and was a Top 40 hit, back in 1982.
