@yndalicia At a time when we lose, our ego would naturally blame At a time when we falldown, our soul would naturally be terrified The memory of going through days of losing hopes and getting drunk My body is without a soul just like a scarecrow But life really is just like the tide of the sea They rise and fall by turn Goodluck, Badluck U just have to wake up and get to work, do it. Thirty percent is Heaven's will, Seventy percent is hard work To win, you have to give your all. (Ai pia cia e ya)
This song brings a tinge of sadness to me. Many years back my friend worked as a bus conductor and his second job was to deliver newpapers to small distributors around town in his old mini van. One fateful morning he had an accident and died tragically. That day his wife was in hospital a few hours after his death she delivered a baby boy. He had said "ai piah cia ae yia".It's thru him that i get to know this meaningful hokkien song but unfortuanately he didn't win but instead lost his life.
this song reflects Taiwan society in 1960~late 80s, due to the fact that TW quit UN, international obsticles and other things, the over all moral is low. So lots of this kind of song were written to boost the moral and promote the idea of hard working. Still, the basic idea works today.
I'm an IBC (Indonesian Born Chinese) now living New York. My great grandparents came from Hokkien to East Java. I think my dad know this song, but I can't speak Hokkien. I just notice that in Malaysia, besides Cantonese there are lots of Hokkien people too. PS: Thanks for the translation of the song.
from a popular music standpoint...the Taiwanese are the ones who have preserved much of the popular hokkien songs for people to enjoy. There are lots of Taiwanese in Flushing. I'm sure if you love to karaoke in Hokkien...many of the Taiwanese functions have karaoke contests...and would probably welcome you.
Excellent !!! Bravo !!! I have this song in CD . What is the title for this DVD or VCD ? Can I get this DVD or VCD in Penang , Malaysia ? Which shop ?
great... i don't really know the exact meaning of the song but it's a motivational song. But it roughly goes like:
Fear not though one failed once; life's merely cycles of crest and trough. Success is 30% predestined and 70% attained by means of hardwork. Hence, hard work ensures success... :)
No offense to the singer. This song is very meaningful but somehow it's always associated with some LOUD and HORRENDOUS singing during wedding dinners :(
I was waiting for someone to translate, tks for translating raym42. I don't really understand hokkien (mi-nang-yi) but cantonese no prob for me. Have been looking for the vid a long time. Tks for uploading.
When you lose your stablility once, do not sigh & complain. When you fail once, do not lose hope. If you lose hope, you will be drunk everyday. A man with no soul is as good as a scarecrow. Life is like the waves of the sea, sometimes up, sometimes down. Whether good luck or bad luck, all must be accomplished through hard work. In life, 30% is decided by Heaven, 70% is decided by ourselves. You must work hard in order to succeed.
This artist is a Taiwanese artist. My family has a VHS with is videos in there. I am curious to see whether this song/video is in the collection. Most of the "Hokkien" songs originated in Taiwan with possible Japanese influences.

I like the way you commented. What has it got to do with malay or chinese when it comes to understanding Hokkien? I'm malay, and i can speak your language, this includes hokkien, cantonese, mandarin. If you don't know what you are saying, i reckon you should keep your mouth shut instead being a twatface in the public. Thanks!
O_o i can't guarantee but i can try. the cantonese version is on my ipod and i don't know how to post it on youtube but i'll try okay? Wish me luck :)

@beitahan88 : AHAHAH !!! It's Hokkien... a Chinese dialect
JimmyLeong 1 year ago
I don't know where this "Tibetan sad song" idea came from...sounds pretty ludicruous.
Tibetan music genre is totally different...they are very religious first of all...and music pertains mainly to their lamaism rituals and prayers.
The only "secular" songs I know of are when men and women sing to each other insults and try to out-sing each other with better insults.
anotherdavidc 1 year ago
I don't know who told you this is a Tibetan song...sounds pretty ridiculous.
I studied music of Asia...and Tibetans are very religious...
This song is typical Taiwanese music with possibly Japanese influences.

Live is sometime discouraging
Live is sometime disappointing
So should we give it up, fooling around all the day
Living without a dream look like a dummy?
Live are like wave on the sea
Sometime rise, sometime fall
good times, bad times, you still need to stay in your position and step on the ground
30% depends on fate, 70% depends on hard-working
Success will only wait for those hard-working
