not positive, but i'm pretty sure this is about Stephen Biko, the Black Consciousness activist who was killed in custody of the police in south africa. not all of the lyrics make to much sense, but theres enough to point to him as the subject. then again, most songs don't make all that much sense at times
Alright guys, seriously cut it out! Joseph is arguing politely, and he never said anything bad about Bloc Party, he just said that, in his opinion, they aren't geniuses. Seriously, who really cares. You guys are basically arguing about the definition of a word! You want to know what the definition is?
"A person who is exceptionally intelligent or *creative,* either generally or in some particular respect." By that definition, *anybody*, including Kele, can be considered a genius.
Hm. Your profile says you have read many books but your attitude and responses show you have learned nothing from them. You are definitely not "polite" by calling everyone an asshole before anyone insulted you. You seem to have something to prove with your constant arguing, to people you dont know. Wierd. Enough of this, everyone knows what sort of person you are from your responses. No arguing will change that. And this dicussion hasn't been about being critical of Bloc Party, it never was.
You people are assholes. Why is it such a crime for someone to have a dissenting opinion on youtube. I like Bloc Party, I just don't think Kele's the end all and be all in music. The second I DARE to put that on youtube, I'm attacked by his legions of zombies telling me what an asshole and moron I am. FUCK YOU. You people would look perfect at a facsist rally, stomping and screaming in your adoration for whatever demagogue happens to be holding center stage. What a bunch of dicks...
Chill out you pleb. Your crime is not realizing that there are other opinions other than your own. Why are you so intent on converting everyone (people you have never met) to your point of view.
Do you even know what a pleb is, you idiot? What does anything I have said to do with being a plebian? Why are YOU so intent on converting MY opinion(hypocrite)? And like I said, I was completely polite with you, you're obviously a fuckin' asshole(and an asshole who doesn't know what the fuck pleb means, here's a little tip, don't try and sound smarter than you really are by using words whose meaning you obviously have no idea of. Pleb?...the fuck? You're an ignoramus, who's rude to boot...)
Kele Okereke is a genius. I am not using that term out of context. He is a brilliant artist and Bloc Party is possibly the best band out there. I listen to a WIDE variety of music and I know a good band when I hear them. I am sure Kele and others will disagree with this comment about him being a genius, but I thought with regard to all the music he has made, i just do not know a non-genius that could have made music like Bloc Party.
No, he is not, that is hyperbole on your part...I also have eclectic tastes when it comes to music, and I can say with CERTAINTY that, though talented, he is NOT a genius...Genius is a rare commodity, and again, it cheapens the word to bandy it around with such disregard for objective consideration...just because they are your favorite band does not a genius make. Silent Alarm is incredible, but not genius...
MAYBE, in a world wide and historical context Kele isnt a genius, but within his own sphere he is. Genius doesnt have to be original, it can also be doing something ordinary exceptionally well. i would say roger federer is a genius with a raquet. Anyway its all subjective.
You are completely missing my point...Just because something moves you, or you really like it, does not mean that the person who made it was a genius...There are plenty of books that I have read that 'no one else could have wrote', and that I thought were brilliant, but that does not make them genius writers. One can be brilliant, but still not be a genius..but I'm not going to argue about it anymore, because I'm obviously not going to convince you.
I didn't say that, once again you aren't reading my comment clearly...I said, and quote, "Just because something moves you, or you really like it, does not mean that the person who made it was a genius." I said, just because something MOVES YOU, like many of Bloc Party's songs do, doesn't qualify them as geniuses. You are seeing what you want to see in reference to my argument. Read more clearly, then come back at me, and I will gladly argue (in a civil manner, obviously) with you...
JosephK1980, how do you determine who is genius or not? What is the criteria for being one? Is there a test you have to take? A certain IQ level? hmmm.... no, one only becomes a genius by being recognized as such by the general public. Einstein was only a 'genius' because he was at the right time and the right place. If enough place call Kele a genius, he is one then, because there is no criteria for being a genius. People will say he is, some will say he is not. CONT
Besides this little return, I'm not going to argue with you. Anyone who has the audacity to say that Bach isn't a genius obviously doesn't know what they are talking about...And Einstein was a genius only because he was in the right time and place? What in the hell are you talking about? How do you figure that Einstein wasn't a REAL genius. Now I'm going to be an asshole, and say that you are truly ignorant. Only a moron would say that Bach and Einstein aren't geniuses...seriously. CONT...
'not going to argue'... funny. I won't go so low as to insult you, but how can you prove that Bach/Einstein/whoever was a genius? A FACT can be proven. Like gravity, you can prove it. But in ALL human issues, there is rarely the case that something is a fact and usually is only an opinion/idea. And yes, if Einstein had not published his ideas at that time, there were others that were close behind him in thinking of the same ideas. In fact, Einstein was one of the biggest critics of CONT.
...critic of quantum mechanics. He was VERY against it, even stating "God does not play dice". This is a genius? Or someone who had excellent ideas about something? And Bach/Mozart/Beethoven/whatever, are they all genius's? Beethoven became what he was because his dad pushed him as a child because he wanted his son to be like Mozart (who came first). So is Mozart the first genius? And Beethoven the copy? Anyway, it is an opinion not a fact that someone is a genius... You can't prove genius. CONT
Genius depends on the era, the population, etc. Consider if an artist with great talent was living in the Soviet Union during the Stalin period. Would he be a genius? Who would know? You can't call oneself a genius. Maybe his friends would because he was their "favorite artist". See my point? Anyone can call anyone a genius, but how do you PROVE that. I am not arguing with you, I just want others to know that you are wrong and that they can call Kele a genius if they want to.
Oh, and i3mg, like I said, I'm not going to argue with a moron who dares to say Einstein and Bach aren't geniuses. Seriously, you are a complete jackass who's countering me just because you happen to love the taste of Kele's nutsack. I know what objective and subjective mean, and it is NOT subjective to say that those two giants are geniuses. It is FACT. Ask any classical musician or musical theorist about Bach, and they will MOST DEFINITELY tell you he's a genius. Same goes for Einstein...
CONT. Considering someone is 'genius' is subjective and not a fact. For example, your reference to Bach and others being 'genius'... they were good... but I don't think they were genius's. They were definitely good, very talented, and trained at a young age to be like that. You can't just say to people that think someone else is a genius that they are wrong. They aren't wrong. It is their opinion, which is not a fact. Just like your ideas about Bloc party, that is YOUR opinion, nothing more.
And it is NOT AN OPINION that Bach and Einstein are geniuses, it is widely recognized FACT, you fool. You shouldn't use the words objective and subjective anymore, because you think you know what they mean, but obviously you are confused. Next you'll tell me that Mozart isn't a genius. You are beyond belief. Anyone with any brains would laugh you out of the fucking room with such ignorant, bone-headed comments...
Dude im laughin but im laughin at joseph. Genius is comepletely subjective, anyway all these examples are from the past, im not so sure they were all recognised as 'genius' in their time.
You know, I was completely respectful of your points, and argued as such. I didn't attack you, and tried to be as polite as possible. So I'm wondering, why are laughing at me? You are an asshole. And by the way, Bach and Einstein were MOST CERTAINLY considered geniuses in their times, so please, don't talk about what you don't know..."you're not so sure they were considered geniuses, etc.,etc."...exactly...not so sure, which means you don't know.
I know I'm going to get all kinds of shit from you zombies for saying this, but I'm gonna' say it anyway...first, I love Bloc Party (although Silent Alarm is much better than there succesive albums), but I assure you, Kele is no genius...stop using that word, you cheapen it with such hyperbole. A genius breaks molds, achieves something that no one has ever acheived before...sorry, but Kele and Bloc don't fit the picture for that. Now bring on the thumbs down, sheep, cuz' me hungry...
Maybe 'genius' is it bit far, but kele has a great philosophy outside of music and his lyrics have intelligent, subtle messages that deserve mentioning.
I agree with you whole-heartedly, (although his lyrics can be a bit ham-handed, sometimes)...I enjoy reading interviews with him, and I think, as a song writer, he is very talented...but if I went around calling every group and author and director who I liked a genius, boy there would be a massive number of geniuses out there. Just because something moves you, doesn't mean you have to lose all perspective and objectivety (not you personally, generally speaking)...
Dostoevsky is a genius, Bach and Kafka and Norman Mailer as well...these men have done something that ASTONISHES the mind and makes one feel small, almost inferior in a way...that is the true power of a genius...
Seriously...i have seen them live and this is the greatest band live that i have ever see , THEY are just tottaly awesome live and im not a big fan of bloc party...if you have the chance to go see them live lets go you will never regret it
like rizoinabox said; it takes pretty epic to get better than silent alarm, and witc, im not so yet impressed by the new sound, would love a song or two more like like eating glass or positive tension
but they got some nice things new too but just not liek the old ones
Sukuna-Biko The Japanese dwarf god who is associated with healing" ... Idk this might have something to do with the song
I love bloc party more than any other band out there right now silent alarm was incredible, AWITC was amazing and I havnt heard all of intimacy but I dont like the electronic stuff as much but this song is amazing I love it...
no, actually "beso" means kiss in Spanish. But whatever. I only know of an anti-apartheid activist who was killed in South Africa in the 70s named Steven Biko. I don't think this song has anything to do with him though. But Peter Gabriel's song "Biko" is about said Steven Biko. I wonder what this Bloc Party song here is really about though...
It is about a friend of Kele's that is dying of cancer- "If i could eat your cancer i would but i cant". And yeah im guessing this is called Biko cuz Biko is please in nigerian so its like asking there friend to please toughen up and not be sad or w/e cuz they have cancer
I don't think that Bloc party has stolen this part of the lyrik from curt cobain. But if..it's okay. He had the same pain and feelings at this situation.
the new album makes a whole lot more sense when you know the background to it, personally i love it, possibly even more than Silent Alarm. Ares is different but Bloc Party like to open their albums with in your face high energy songs like eating glass on Silent Alarm and song for clay on AWITC, so for me its the perfect track to open the album.
i just noticed somthing if you add an h to the abriverations of a weekend in the city you get a witch and ironicly one of the soung is hunting for witches, maybe thats some irony or its kele's geniussness showing through
BLOC PARTY DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT TURN BLACK, HOW FUCKING DEAR YOU SAY THEY THERE STOLE NERVANA SHIT, THE SONG WAS WROTE BASED OFF THE FACT THAT I THINK ONE OF KELE FRIENDS GOT CANCER SO THATS WHERE THATS LINE COMES FROM. SO DON'T SAY STUPID SHIT LIKE THAT.
WITH KELE'S GENIUS THEY DON'T NEED TO STEAL ANYBODY LYRICS.
im glad you like insulting people you cant see over youtube! just for the record i dont even really like cobain or nirvana... (pearl jam = much better).
maybe in your tight small box of an existence... im a massive fan of bloc party but some of their lyrics are more than questionable and their later stuff is declining in quality.
mmmm same, glad you are not some douche jus givin me shit. jus in my opinion theres more musical qualities to pearl jams stuff (and a fair few bands) than BP's new stuff. It takes something pretty epic to get better than Silent Alarm though!!!
mmm yeah i love bloc's new stuff too. & i reckon songs like this one, ion square, signs & zepherus are btter than some of their old tracks. but in general silent alarm and AWITC do it for me more than intimacy
Bloc Party are a solid band with massive talent i hate it wen people go off a band just cuz they change a little bit bloc party are still as brilliant as they were wen silent alarm came out
Sorry to disagree with you, but in my opinion Bloc Party are one of the most lyrically intrigue bands of recent times. Songs like 'Cain said to Abel' have biblical references, while others such as 'Rhododendrons' have staunch historical reference. They deal with difficult themes such youth subculture in 'England', contribution of media hysteria concerning terrorism in 'Hunting for Witches', and even suicide in 'SRXT'(Seroxat).
Although I do agree with you about their sound. (Sorry to rant)

SAD SONG BTW, BUT AMAZING AS ALWAYS IS BLOC PARTY

maybe youre right that it isnt stolen and tha kele is genius but you dont have to react that agressive ok?

you're suck a dick fair doos, all that guy said was its extremely similar to cobains lyrics. get over yourself.
rizoinabox 3 years ago
Just one or 2 lines, get over yourself first, and get off Cobain's dick.

im glad you like insulting people you cant see over youtube! just for the record i dont even really like cobain or nirvana... (pearl jam = much better).

Amen to that...

bloc party and their lyrics take a long dump on pearl jam any day of the week
astm37 3 years ago 6
maybe in your tight small box of an existence... im a massive fan of bloc party but some of their lyrics are more than questionable and their later stuff is declining in quality.
rizoinabox 3 years ago
hmmm well as long as you are a BP fan & not some idiot who comments on vids of bands they hate solely to piss their fans off.
but still...original bloc party > new bloc party > pearl jam
astm37 3 years ago 2
mmmm same, glad you are not some douche jus givin me shit. jus in my opinion theres more musical qualities to pearl jams stuff (and a fair few bands) than BP's new stuff. It takes something pretty epic to get better than Silent Alarm though!!!
rizoinabox 3 years ago
I don't know, I really like the new Bloc Party... Its more alternative and less rock.
numberonetreehugger 3 years ago
mmm yeah i love bloc's new stuff too. & i reckon songs like this one, ion square, signs & zepherus are btter than some of their old tracks. but in general silent alarm and AWITC do it for me more than intimacy
astm37 3 years ago 3
he might of used it for that reason, i doubt he nicked it

great tune lads!! remarkable.. but who will tell me what means 'Biko'?
balast69 3 years ago
Biko is probably the name of one of Kele's friends.
GogglesVK 3 years ago
Biko is for Steve Biko, he was an anti-apartheid activist in South Africa in the 1960s and early 1970s.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
i love this band, lyrically there not that strong however there sound is soooo good, i love it
goldiekid717 3 years ago
Sorry to disagree with you, but in my opinion Bloc Party are one of the most lyrically intrigue bands of recent times. Songs like 'Cain said to Abel' have biblical references, while others such as 'Rhododendrons' have staunch historical reference. They deal with difficult themes such youth subculture in 'England', contribution of media hysteria concerning terrorism in 'Hunting for Witches', and even suicide in 'SRXT'(Seroxat).
Although I do agree with you about their sound. (Sorry to rant)

how long did you spend drafting this comment? well written...

this is what great bands do, transcend expectations with a unique, refreshing sound. it works, it's just not what people expected.
