The ones on here who are saying that GMC should just let it go and move on have no fucking clue how much money is actually involved here. He wrote the rhyme and dude didn't even change the lyrics to suit him because he himself was an idiot. This song still plays today and every time that record plays a check for royalties goes out to BBH. From 1979 to 2011 and that song still kills and is considered a classic. GMC should be compensated for that cuz he introduced a hip hop classic to the world.
in 79 hip hop was new mostly made up of street kids this shit about copy rights did not exist among so call friends. the end result is greed. hank never gave caz the respect and part of his money or credit to caz. don't blame caz for being bitter this rap made millions during 79 and caz got nothing but a knife up his ass. is rough to see your ex friend driving a cadillac or living in a big house and your money pay for it..

If you ask me, and I'm NOT justifying theft, the decision was made because Hank had that Jolly,rolly-polly look, and he had the VOICE that was better for a record. Also, they weren't going to market more than one dark-skinned brother. STILL, it was theft and Hank & Sylvia were wrong. Lesson learned? Copyright your stuff. Hate to say it, BBH did nothing illegal; unethical, immoral? YES! But nothing he could be sued for.
is ashame that this rhymes became world known and nobody including myself knew they were stolen. how can a human being enjoy the royalties the money this rhyme produce and live with himself knowing that the real artist was still strugling to pay bills, caz i would organized a group of followers and go to every event that hank appears and protest this motherfucker till he cracks and finally admits the truth.
That kind of shit been happening to muthafuka's since music has been recorded to wax and became a business. Elvis Presley and a whole shit load of muthafukas stole shit. Thats what muthafukas do when presented certain opportunities. The only problem is when youre young you don't realize the snake in the grass coming to bite your ass.
Take a look at an Elvis record. How many songs show up as written by Elvis? The problem isn't that they took what he wrote, it's that they took what he wrote and gave him no credit.
I heard a long time ago that GM Caz wrote it, but I always thought he got paid to write it. That's some foul ish right there. Sugarhill Gang was stupid for not paying him then. They might have been more successful had they been paying GM Caz to write some more songs for them and plus help him blow up in the meantime.
Just foul, the more things change the more they stay the same. It's sad.
Oh please just look at Caz right now, all gangsta and shit? Swearing, using nigga and all. He wasnt like that when he was rhyming in the 80's, he is fake as hell, he just dresses like that and swears and shit just because the rap game changed.
It could be that Caz just wanted to vent about not getting proper credit for the rap(s) he wrote. And maybe, just maybe, he is burning about not getting the paper.
I don't know the record industry like that, but I believe that had he copyrighted the song, he EASILY would be a MULTI-millionaire right now.
@CoolKidX85 If you wrote the rhyme that was the first Rap song to ever been put on records, goes down in history, legendary in everyone eyes, and you get nothing how would you feel?
i mean come on, if the record didn't blow u wouldn't even be complaining. he said your name twice in the damn song, but you should be compensated for your contributions
Let that shit go CAZ - YOU were and still is/are one of the best of all time and glad to see CC4 is still together and reppin strong. no reason u can't do get paid. everybody know who was cassanova fly !!!!
I think if Caz wrote 4 Hank he should have been the Producer of Hank and got 50% of the his gross. If a man uses your lines and can't write his own u made him!
@Dfuq1 Did you catch that? "The record was Rapper's Delight and most of the rhymes were written by Caz." I'm not a mathematician, but it seems to me most of HANK'S rhymes were written by GMC, NOT the group as a whole. It's a bit misleading. I wonder if Caz has called up Rahiem and asked if he wanted a piece of the pie, too. I doubt it. Even though Caz is entitled to something, money often turns people into idiots.
In a way I feel sorry for Hank. It was such an obvious screw up that I'm not so sure it was deliberate. Was it an ADD moment? Why would he introduce himself as Casanova Fly? Something doesn't smell right here. Caz has a right to be confused and upset, but something else is at play here.
I agree, people are making it out into something so huge. If he did change the lyrics, that only would of made it worse. Sure "Fly" should of gotten a piece of the pie but looking over the entire song, their entire career, they are making a big hoopla over a small section of a song and they diss Hank. They really have gone overboard in the rap community about a small section of a song. Again he should be acknowleged but damn they went crazy about it and trashed Hank
@1980Triumph I know why Hank won't, but he should just throw some cash Caz's way, stick his name on the album, along with Rahiem and everyone else in the rap community, and just be done with it. Elvis didn't write many of his songs, but he's still a legend. If you want to be fair about it, Hank jacked some rhymes, but he's a pretty good rapper for a guy who was just a pizza boy and wasn't classified as a rapper until he was signed to Sugar Hill.
maybe it wasn't up to Hank, may it was sugarhill records? IT just annoys me how big this thing has blown over a few verses in a song, not even everything Hank said was a Caz verse. I am not saying Caz shouldn't get credit, but people are making Hank into a villain, but Caz GAVE HANK the lyrics to use. I am just saying, this video is acting as if Caz wrote the entire song, and/or every verse that Hank rapped
True Elvis didn't write may of his songs (in fact, the Jackson 5 wrote NONE of their songs, or so I've heard), but proper songwriting credit WAS given to the ones who DID write the lyrics. If not the money, I think Caz simply wants to be properly acknowledged for his contribution.
Thank you. That is what these kiddies do not understand. Caz should have been acknowledged. Of course, the money is an issue because that record was successful, and I do not blame Caz for being somewhat bitter. He deserved a piece of the pie: a BIGGER piece than Hank.
Back then, it was all about the love of the game... GrandMaster Caz is a legend. A brilliant writer and true MC. Big Bank Hank was always a fake ass MC. He back doored his friend? What kind of shit is that? Caz is placed up there with the all time greats! Where's Hank? Just like he said... let him stay neutral for the rest of his MFin' life!!!!! When I met Hank I told him he owes Caz his career. He couldn't even answer back on it either.
Even Russell Simmons said the same thing on the movie "THE SHOW". Russell said that Hank was a "fake" Caz. Sugar Hill made the record w/Hank saying Caz's shit and Caz not get any credit for it, no shout-out, not even gave the man any dap. WTF?
Why would Caz or any MC let another MC use his rap without getting paid first. I would of never let any one use my rhymes, he shouldn't be complaining he should of asked for money straight out, but good thing he did let him hank use his ryhmes because hip hop might not have evolved without the commercial rap "Rappers Delight"
I'm sure he was a dumb kid then and thought it was an opportunity to get known or get paid. He didn't have a head for the business. Gave some lyrics to a friend and thought he'd get hooked up, obviously never happened. He's all the wiser for it now.
BIG BANK HANK on "Rapper's Delight" : "..A time to break and a time to chill/to act civilized or act real ill\\But, whatever you do in your lifetime/just never let an MC steal your rhyme.." OOPS!!
I'm Curious if Bitch Ass "skank". I call " HANK" " SKANK". Has heard NaS remix of where are they now? and realized that another nigga from the hood. recognize real.?? Did it have to take that long. And how long will it take for the rest of the world to see. And Somebody give my brother a damn Contract. cause he so nice. WORD!
Thats TRUE!!!!because the other BEEfs is just like "You Siad This and Im Gonna Do That" or "You Did This And Gonna GeT mY rEVENGE" bUT THIS GOES BACK TO the 70s where Hip Hop started and shows a Real BEEF
i always knew the entertainment business was shady.Caz is the only "ghost writer" that never got paid$.. wow! ..thats the breaks..kurtis Blow said it best..lol
I actually took one of the Hush tours in New york and Grandmaster Caz was the host along side JDL and he explained the whole thing about How Hank said to him that he was gonna get him on this track and he just needed the rhymes to show to the producers and that he was taking Caz with him. Hank was his God damn manager for fuck sake!!! you can't steal other peoples material especially when you represent them! Period! Big up the cold crush brothers!
valid arguments all....personally CAZ was robbed..not that i ever recall sylvia robinson or any member of the SHG saying anything good or bad....but,CAZ was right about one thing...no thanks,no credit, not even a shout out...WOW!
one thing i will add to the whole thing---even if CAZ was involved thoroughly from the jump...he still would have been robbed.such was the nature of the beast back then...and let's face it...mrs.robinson was no benevolent angel.
To hear the tru blu rhyme for the very first time from the man...the legend...who's creation it is.....Wow man...that's hip hop history right there. How many Old Skool, even New Skool hed's wouldn't put there notes over the counter to have this in there collection. Like man I got the Original Grandmaster Caz record, check it out. Not many!!!!
Yeah man I heard about this for my first time that GMC was the ORIGINAL when I got this Old School Hip Hop dvd when i was on my first deployment in Iraq in 06 I Was like WHOA!!!!! its like that! DAAAMMNNN!!
I feel bad for Caz but if he was that talented you would think he would have made his life ghost writing for sugarhill and many other companies if not making his own hit in the early years? You don't have to explain, but you should get back at the world with a awesome rhyme that will bring you much fame and forture. Good luck to you because you are very talented! God bless ya Caz!
i feel you on that caz! thats why i dont see him huh!! keep doin what you doin and have some more old school concerts and hook me up, im a old school hip-hop craze person!
With all due respect to Caz. He gave Hank the lyrics (Hank didn't steal them). Sylvia Robinson not Hank decided who got credit for what. More important, Wonder Mike and Master G wrote their own stuff and Caz is biting Wonder Mike's lyrics in this video and not giving credit himself. I understand where Caz is coming from because Rapper's Delight was "The Daddy". But it Caz needs to move on for his own mental health, nothing good comes from almost 30 years of bitterness.
So if you were an artist, and gave copies or even your sketchbook of drawings to someone because you trusted them as your friend and manager. Then that person goes and puts up an art gallery of those drawings, but claims he drew all of them and made money off of it, it's okay because you gave your sketchbook to your supposedly close friend?
I work in the music industry. My logic is reality. Didn't say it was OK, I just said after this long it isn't good for Caz well being to still carry one about it. I could give you 100 other examples of famous artists getting paid off of others' skill and originality dating back to before Pat Boone bit Little Richard. But if being mad is all you can relate to, so be it.
No, your logic stated earlier that you said it wasn't stealing, because Caz let Hank look at his rhyme book. So yes, it wasn't stealing that Hank had the book in his possession, but it was stealing to pass off the rhymes in it as his own creation. Your logic about how the music industry works is irrelevant to our argument. We're talking about
Caz GAVE Hank the lyrics, Hank didn't steal them. Caz deserves credit for his lyrics but not credit for Rapper's Delight because the song would have happened with or without Hank/Caz. Once again, Caz has a reason to be upset but 30 years later he's playing himself he had some other lyrics in that book of his, use them instead of wasting time mad at Hank. The whole Sugar Hill roster didn't get paid and most of them got on with their lives.
And the answer is, it was stealing, he didn't tell Hank to use his rhymes as his own, he just let him look at his book. Claiming or passing it off that you WROTE something you didn't WRITE is stealing. You ADMITTED it yourself, Pat Boone "bit" off little Richard, you're admitting the music industry does steal, when earlier you said
what Hank did wasn't stealing. We're not talking about how the music industry works, we're talking about the defition of thievery homie, you're going way off topic arguing strawmen.
Is it OK, that Caz is biting Wonder Mike's part of Rapper's Delight as his intro? Once again, its been 30 years!!! Caz has rapped on stage with the rest of the Sugar Hill Gang. There is no grand conspiracy to deny Caz credit, just one businesswoman who did unto Caz just like the music industry did unto Doo Wop artists, early RnB artists, blues artists, "and the beat goes on and on and on..."
Are you involved in hip hop? Well, you should be excommunicated now.
P.S., I'm pretty sure Sugarhill is not under contract with Sylvia Brown and haven't been for a long time, so he could've at any time after shared who wrote the majority of his rhymes.
Is it a secret who wrote what? I think not, Hank isn't running around declaring he wrote anything and the rest of Sugar Hill notes that either they or the ladies of Sequence wrote most of what Hank rapped in other Sugar Hill hits. Sorry that I actually know the real story and that might make my perspective a lot less bitter toward anyone. Caz has had a lot of time to vent; now if that anger was channeled into creation not bitching, the American Public would know his name too beyond Wildstyle.
So they're willing to acknowledge the "ladies of Sequence," and not the very guy who wrote the majority of the rhymes in the FIRST official rap record ever?
How do you know he wasn't creating? It's not a matter of if he created or not, he just maybe chose not to go mainstream. BUt in the effect that mainstream artists are using his material, professionally, and common courtesy would tell you to credit your source.
He wrote a third of Rapper's Delight. Master Gee and Wonder Mike brought their own stuff to the table. Caz deserves credit. Caz deserves credit. Caz deserves credit. But he's better served moving forward instead of looking back with bitterness. Rapper's Delight was going to happen with or without Caz and Hank. Caz needs to move on.
we all new that was caz's shit! FUCK HANK!!!!!!!!! FUCK YALL THAT DONT SEE A STRAIGHT ROBBERY!!!!!!!! I guess u think Bush got us in Iraq to free the people! FUCK HANK!!!!! FAT ASS!!!!!
Innercity, you have to emember though, back then there were no contracts or record deals and also, a mans word meant something. It's a shame though Cazz didn't get props for this, but everyone knew this was cazz'z work.
So hank uses his homies lyrics to come up and gives grandmater caz NO money, NO credit NOTHING. Ya hank is really keeping it real! Thus the term sell out, weak mutha fucka, that old ho bitch shit or whatever the fuck YOU want to call it! What if it was your lyrics being used in one of the biggest rap song of all time and you did'nt get shit from it? How would you feel? No hatin here. hanks just a BITCH. And anyone that disagrees is a BITCH. Wake up ya SORRY BITCHES.
If it were my lyrics, they would have been given to them under contract so that I would make sure I would be properly compensated for my work, not handed over without a second thought. My point has nothing to do with what Hank did, my point is entirely that Caz could have avoided all this if he'd thought ahead a little and insisted on some sort of agreement. I'll bet he hasn't made that mistake since.
If you had a painting and your friend said, "could I borrow it for inspiration to paint my own stuff?" And then you let your friend borrow it, and he goes and uses your painting as his own claiming all credit for it.
It wasn't a business transaction, it was a friend letting a close friend borrow or look at his work, you don't get all, "let's make
a contract about this," in that sort of a situation.
"Hey man, I'll lend you my car for the weekend so you can travel down to meet your parents." And then the guy claims the car is his because he let you use it? If you let your friend borrow your cell phone to call someone, do you say, "hey well umm, we better make a legal document clearly stating
He knew exactly why he was giving him the book. Friend or no friend, if someone asks me for something I've created so he can be on someone else's album, you bet I'm going to be having both him and whoever he's recording with signing a contract promising me royalties for the use of my creation. That's good business, and the whole "friend" thing is just an excuse for not thinking ahead.
How can you be a sellout when your first step into the music world is as a commercial act? That's like calling MC Hammer a sellout: he was doing exactly what he wanted to do. It's a term driven by jealousy moreso than anything else. If you think you know how it should be done, then get up and do it; don't stand there pointing at the people who have really achieved success trying to question it's legitimacy.
Yeah Hank was too stupid to change the lyrics up...but uh....You were too stupid to give him the lyrics...It's this guys fault his lyrics got stolen and blasted as the first hip hop hit. He shouldn't even be bitchin' IT'S HIS FAULT
If your close friend asks to use your cooking recipe for a dish, and you let your friend know it, you're not thinking, "uhh oh, better get my lawyer to make sure he doesn't steal my idea." It's a guy he hung out with, his friend, and manager, not some random businessman on the street you moron.
Everything the man says is true. But: this is what happens in a fledgling art form that hadn't at the time learned the importance of protecting what you create. In the hip-hop world at the time until RD became the first gold single, that just wasn't something people thought about. The guy *gave* Hank his rhymes, and now he regrets it. I don't blame him for feeling that way, but at the same, time, well...sorry, man. Hope you learned your lesson: Always handle up on your business.
Capitalism and the blind pursuit of money kills all sincere art forms. The second a musical genre becomes heavily commercial it looses all of the original intent and realism. Salaam.
He's much too old to be wearing a jersey. I mean he is a grown ass man. Put a suit on or something. But, in anycase, Caz needs the credit he truly deserves. He's one of the many old school artists who put paved the way for the artits you see today.
I love this song, and the guys, but honestly, but this song came out in 79, jesus. MOVE ON, do you, people don't understand this.. he needs to move on and do what he needs to do to make money now.. not worry about what he lost. karma is a bitch, and he should just let karma take care of hank...
it's easy to tell someone else to get over something. That's a part of Caz's legacy being the writer of a song that shaped music history. Never mind not making money from that. You can't get mad at this dude for demanding what is rightly his. History gets rewritten far too often, one of the main reasons certain people exist in the disadvantaged states they do for others taking credit for what they did not in fact do. Fight apathy!
I'm not saying its easy to let go... but for a person to grow and become a better man, he should let it go, shit honestly i know caz and hardly remember bank hank.. it might not be written down, but i remember this guy. I agree, its a shame he doesn't have the credit he wants, but you live and learn. He got screwed. Honestly, people get screwed everyday, and most of it is not fully educating themselves in the situation. He even said he was blinded. He should have consulted someone.
AsSalaamMuAliakum brother. I feel what you mean. However black people in this country have developed, invented, and improved countless items and art forms; and gained very little money or credit. Caz has suffered a great injustice, he helped found a musical genre and has been forgotten. I wonder would this happen if he were white and it was Rock instead of Hip-Hop? Karma is a good concept, but it is past time we (black folks) seek justice instead of karma. Stay srong black people. Salaam
who's justice? most people who say "seek justice" end in jail. all these beef videos do nothing but promo hate and no growth. He should set a better example as a man first (if your muslim i'm sure you'll understand that) and then move on. All these vids promote is men actin' like complaining women. Stop complaing about he said she said... and grow up. This isn't about a white or black thing, thats tired, he got screwed cause he didn't protect himself, he should have consulted someone.

Isnt it a little late, and with that I mean almost 20 years later, to diss someone? Shiiiiit.
CoolKidX85 1 year ago
@CoolKidX85
Just off that one rap he wrote.

Dfuq1 2 years ago

Caz has a right to be confused and upset, but something else is at play here.
surfer53 2 years ago
he didn't know how to emcee! he couldn't rhyme his name anywhere in those verses and make it sound right because he didn't know what he was doing.
abovefilms 2 years ago
@surfer53
1980Triumph 2 years ago
@1980Triumph I know why Hank won't, but he should just throw some cash Caz's way, stick his name on the album, along with Rahiem and everyone else in the rap community, and just be done with it. Elvis didn't write many of his songs, but he's still a legend. If you want to be fair about it, Hank jacked some rhymes, but he's a pretty good rapper for a guy who was just a pizza boy and wasn't classified as a rapper until he was signed to Sugar Hill.
surfer53 2 years ago
@surfer53
maybe it wasn't up to Hank, may it was sugarhill records? IT just annoys me how big this thing has blown over a few verses in a song, not even everything Hank said was a Caz verse. I am not saying Caz shouldn't get credit, but people are making Hank into a villain, but Caz GAVE HANK the lyrics to use. I am just saying, this video is acting as if Caz wrote the entire song, and/or every verse that Hank rapped
1980Triumph 2 years ago
@surfer53
UdoShan 1 year ago
@UdoShan
Thank you. That is what these kiddies do not understand. Caz should have been acknowledged. Of course, the money is an issue because that record was successful, and I do not blame Caz for being somewhat bitter. He deserved a piece of the pie: a BIGGER piece than Hank.

WTF?
JLJ310 2 years ago
Why would Caz or any MC let another MC use his rap without getting paid first. I would of never let any one use my rhymes, he shouldn't be complaining he should of asked for money straight out, but good thing he did let him hank use his ryhmes because hip hop might not have evolved without the commercial rap "Rappers Delight"

But it Caz needs to move on for his own mental health, nothing good comes from almost 30 years of bitterness.
jcsomerville 3 years ago
So if you were an artist, and gave copies or even your sketchbook of drawings to someone because you trusted them as your friend and manager. Then that person goes and puts up an art gallery of those drawings, but claims he drew all of them and made money off of it, it's okay because you gave your sketchbook to your supposedly close friend?
Your logic is stupid.
Holyfiremikey 3 years ago
I work in the music industry. My logic is reality. Didn't say it was OK, I just said after this long it isn't good for Caz well being to still carry one about it. I could give you 100 other examples of famous artists getting paid off of others' skill and originality dating back to before Pat Boone bit Little Richard. But if being mad is all you can relate to, so be it.
jcsomerville 3 years ago
No, your logic stated earlier that you said it wasn't stealing, because Caz let Hank look at his rhyme book. So yes, it wasn't stealing that Hank had the book in his possession, but it was stealing to pass off the rhymes in it as his own creation. Your logic about how the music industry works is irrelevant to our argument. We're talking about
Is it stealing? Yes or No?
Holyfiremikey 3 years ago
Caz GAVE Hank the lyrics, Hank didn't steal them. Caz deserves credit for his lyrics but not credit for Rapper's Delight because the song would have happened with or without Hank/Caz. Once again, Caz has a reason to be upset but 30 years later he's playing himself he had some other lyrics in that book of his, use them instead of wasting time mad at Hank. The whole Sugar Hill roster didn't get paid and most of them got on with their lives.
jcsomerville 3 years ago
And the answer is, it was stealing, he didn't tell Hank to use his rhymes as his own, he just let him look at his book. Claiming or passing it off that you WROTE something you didn't WRITE is stealing. You ADMITTED it yourself, Pat Boone "bit" off little Richard, you're admitting the music industry does steal, when earlier you said
Holyfiremikey 3 years ago
what Hank did wasn't stealing. We're not talking about how the music industry works, we're talking about the defition of thievery homie, you're going way off topic arguing strawmen.
Holyfiremikey 3 years ago
No, you said it was okay, you said it's okay because Caz let him look at his book, so you said it was okay that Hank passed it off as his rhymes.
Holyfiremikey 3 years ago
Is it OK, that Caz is biting Wonder Mike's part of Rapper's Delight as his intro? Once again, its been 30 years!!! Caz has rapped on stage with the rest of the Sugar Hill Gang. There is no grand conspiracy to deny Caz credit, just one businesswoman who did unto Caz just like the music industry did unto Doo Wop artists, early RnB artists, blues artists, "and the beat goes on and on and on..."
jcsomerville 3 years ago
Are you involved in hip hop? Well, you should be excommunicated now.
P.S., I'm pretty sure Sugarhill is not under contract with Sylvia Brown and haven't been for a long time, so he could've at any time after shared who wrote the majority of his rhymes.
Holyfiremikey 3 years ago
Is it a secret who wrote what? I think not, Hank isn't running around declaring he wrote anything and the rest of Sugar Hill notes that either they or the ladies of Sequence wrote most of what Hank rapped in other Sugar Hill hits. Sorry that I actually know the real story and that might make my perspective a lot less bitter toward anyone. Caz has had a lot of time to vent; now if that anger was channeled into creation not bitching, the American Public would know his name too beyond Wildstyle.
jcsomerville 3 years ago
So they're willing to acknowledge the "ladies of Sequence," and not the very guy who wrote the majority of the rhymes in the FIRST official rap record ever?
How do you know he wasn't creating? It's not a matter of if he created or not, he just maybe chose not to go mainstream. BUt in the effect that mainstream artists are using his material, professionally, and common courtesy would tell you to credit your source.
Holyfiremikey 3 years ago
He wrote a third of Rapper's Delight. Master Gee and Wonder Mike brought their own stuff to the table. Caz deserves credit. Caz deserves credit. Caz deserves credit. But he's better served moving forward instead of looking back with bitterness. Rapper's Delight was going to happen with or without Caz and Hank. Caz needs to move on.

fitzscott 3 years ago
If it were my lyrics, they would have been given to them under contract so that I would make sure I would be properly compensated for my work, not handed over without a second thought. My point has nothing to do with what Hank did, my point is entirely that Caz could have avoided all this if he'd thought ahead a little and insisted on some sort of agreement. I'll bet he hasn't made that mistake since.

If you had a painting and your friend said, "could I borrow it for inspiration to paint my own stuff?" And then you let your friend borrow it, and he goes and uses your painting as his own claiming all credit for it.

Everything the man says is true. But: this is what happens in a fledgling art form that hadn't at the time learned the importance of protecting what you create. In the hip-hop world at the time until RD became the first gold single, that just wasn't something people thought about. The guy *gave* Hank his rhymes, and now he regrets it. it's easy to tell someone else to get over something.

Salaam
