@aquagirl626 A 10lb bag of Golden Brands 464 would only cost you $14 at candlescience, which would be enough to make 30 of these 8oz tins. Once you add in fragrance, wick, and dye that would come to about $3 per candle. These make great gifts and can be very profitable if you decide to sell them. If you only want one candle then you're right it would not be affordable to make it yourself, this is, however ideal for people who love candles and would like to have several or give homemade gifts
@AUSNick87 No, in fact it tends to be the opposite. Anything you add to a candle will tend to slow the burn. So generally speaking a colored candle will burn slower than an white candle using the same wick.
I have a question; I followed the directions according to this video here and on the website as well as the instructions on the website as well and my candle tops did not come out smooth. Why was that and how do I avoid it in the future?
@rmbb10 Rough tops are generally caused by fragrance. Make sure you are weighting the right amount of fragrance, adding it hot (185 degrees F), and stirring well (2 mins). That will usually fix the problem.
I really enjoyed this video; I wanted to know what containers you recommend using and do you heat the up 1st. I really like the apothecary & interlude glass jars; I want to get into candle making.
@rmbb10 Thanks! We recommend tins for beginners, you might want to try them first. Otherwise the Status Jar is really great since the sides are parallel and it's a manageable diameter for soy wicking (3" instead of 4" in the apothecary). We recommend preheating jars to the same temperature as the wax is recommended to be poured. With Golden Brands 464 that is 135 deg F.
@kensfreedom That is caused by the wax shrinking. If you follow the directions on this video with Golden Brands 464 you should not have shrinkage problems.
Is there a burnin point for the fragrance oils? I make soap and alot of fragrances burn off in certain hot temps. What's the best temp to add fragrance without the wax being too hot??
@xxkleenexrockxx If kept at a high temperature for too long certain FOs will lose strength. We recommend adding hot to make sure the FO can fully dissolve, but then not leaving the FO hot for very long.
can you tell whats better..soy wax flakes or a bar?i'm from germany and here i can't really find soy wax flakes just 1kg bar but all videos i saw they use flakes :-/ should i invest more money for flakes or or not?
@JustTryAndTry The form that the wax is in doesn't matter. To my knowledge all US produced soy wax is flaked. But if you can get high quality soy wax in slabs it should work fine.
I've come back to this video several times - you guys are seriously awesome! One more question for you though: When I pour my wax, the wick tabs sort of pop up a little and I have to be careful not to let them move. I'm attaching them with glue dots like you suggest. Is this an issue I should be concerned about? Maybe I'm pouring too hot? (Using Ecosoy Advanced, pouring at 155 like their website says for small containers.) Thanks again! :)
@afkeyes Thank you for the compliment! We recommend pouring CB Adv at 125, you may want to try that. Also since we made this video we have switched from glue dots to the wick stickums we sell on the site now. The stickums work much better and will almost never pop off the bottom of a clean container.
This is a fantastic video! Can't wait to try making candles! Two questions though... I don't get how a pound of wax makes 3 8-ounce candles. Shouldn't it only make two since a pound is 16 ounces? And you mention heating and pouring temps in the video, but if I purchased a different type of soy wax should I use the temps on the Candle Science product page?
Q: I don't get how a pound of wax makes 3 8-ounce candles.
A: Containers are rated in volume ounces, not weight ounces. If you look at the containers on our site we show the conversion. A pound of wax fills 3 8 oz containers by volume.
Q:if I purchased a different type of soy wax should I use the temps on the Candle Science product page?
A: Yes, the temperatures listed in the video are only for GB 464
@candlescience Thank you SO much for answering my question! I just made my first 8 ounce soy tin today - it's drying right now and - so far so good! :) This video is wonderful. You guys rock! :)
Thanks for answering my question. I have another. why do I get air bubble and holes around the wick when then dry. What i normally do is save a couple ounces when i pour one, then when it drys I go back and melt the left over wax, and top off my candles and it works perfectly but its very time consuming.
@southern8127 That is going to require more room than we have here. Go to our website, click on the support link in the top navigation, and send us a support email. We'll be happy to help.
@liukitty Unfortunately I am not familiar with shipping policies of other sites. I just searched Google for 'UK soy wax' and found several local distributors.
@southern8127 135 is the best temperature. Just remove the wax from the heat and stir occasionally while monitoring the temperature. It will not be hard to hit 135 on the dot. Consistent pour temperatures are very important to making quality candles.
Hi! I love this video - explains everything perfect. I do have a question though. When I put my dye chip in, stir let it cool and then pour the candle. Sometimes the dye doesn't "dye" all the wax - and it leaves part of the candle white...why is this? It's happened multiple times and no matter how much I blend (stir) it still happens. I sell them so I end up having to keep those for myself and try again...thanks!
Im making candles and was hoping you can help me out with a question i have, everytime i burn a candle it gets a white film on top, do you know what im doing wrong?
This may be a crazy question, but... I see that there are different soy way ratings for the scents for sale on the site. Can I buy a level 3 and just use less in it to decrease the potency or will it alter the consistency?
@lbritton1 Absolutely. Using less of a potent fragrance is the way to go. Generally the more fragrance, the tougher the candle is to wick. So using less of a strong fragrance is much better than using more of a less potent one.
I really enjoyed watching your Soy Candlemaking Tutorial. It was clear, concise and very helpful. I was then led to your website which I'd not yet seen. Great website. I'll surely be ordering from you in the very near future.
I have one quuick question: I'm looking for wooden wick candle suppliers, would you all be interested in selling them in the near future at all?
I want to order everything that you have used, I have my own scale, I have visited your website, but if it is possible could you send me a message in my inbox telling me a supplies list of the things you have used, thank you very much, I want to get started right away so the sooner I get your response I would be much appreciative.
@chinewmarie If you go to our website and click on the learning section in the top navigation bar, then click the link for 'Beginner Candle Making with Soy Wax' there is a linked list of all the materials used.
I wanna try this sooooobad, but im not crafty, AT ALL. I spend a lot ( like a couple hundred a month) on candles, I just dont know if I'd be able to scent them correctly. Anyone done this and have any advice?
Tha's my idea to save money! I bough a candle making kit because i am a beginner and love candles very much, but they are too expensive,so i am hoping to save some money by learning how to make my own. So here I am looking for some good videos on candle making.
Hi..I am residing in UAE and I love candle making as a hobby or for business in the future. I tried to find a supplier of materials for candlemaking here but unfortunately didn't find any. How can you help me, thank you very much.
@FlOpPiNgGoLdFiSh We use industrial hot plates in our lab that are great but expensive. If you don't want to invest in one a double boiler is less expensive and still very safe. We use the double boiler method in our new video: Simple Paraffin Container Candles.
Can you tell me why my soy candles are sinking when I burn them instead of burning straight across? Also, they have a bumpy texture on top they are not smooth like I've seen before??? I am using 100% SOY WAX
Your wicks may not be large enough 4 the container u r using (thats why u have a well)..always save a lil bit of wax after pouring, sometimes 2nd pours are necessary. Just pour along the top & you should have a nice surface. Or a hairdryer on a low setting can flatten it out 4 aesthetics. Hope this helps
This is exactly what I want to do-start my own business. But, I have nervous for some reason. I have potential customers at my daughter's school already-without product. Where and how do I begin?
I was really apprehensive about trying it out until I saw this tutorial. I was clueless about how easy soy candle making is. Thanks for sharing!
