  • Great info. Added to my arsenal.

  • Hey i really enjoy ur videos thanks, only been doing bjj maybe 3/4 months but love it and find these videos on you tube a great help.. obv watch these and then go and practise them :)

  • Regarding the whole choke versus neck crank thing.

If you are having a problem throwing this submission on and it is a neck crank, or someone tries it on you and is just cranking the daylights out of your neck it is probably an issue with arm placement.

The arm that hooks the head needs to be as deep as possible. I have found if there is any space that that my training partners will report I was cranking their necks instead of choking them.

  • thanks ima try this at juijitsu today

  • @funman2100

    SHUT THE FUCK UP

  • @honeydew455 .... how did you find this

  • I've learned so much from watching your vids. My sub game is improving greatly, thanx

    -Chokeaholic-

  • Awesome tip on the squeezing practicing. I never thought of that.

  • Oh for the record I like this video. That last comment was in reference to some comments I read about sweeping or bein swept. Just felt like giving my opinion. I'm addicted to arm triangles, brabo's and anaconda chokes at the mo for nogi. :)

  • I generally try to do the upa to reverse mount so I go to closed guard top. The second I feel someone crossface me in mount I know they can't post that arm out anymore so I immediately bridge straight onto the shoulder being crossfaced and roll into their guard. I would never try to crossface from mount myself unless I was anticipating the bridge. I like the impaler though. Bet that's some nasty pressure!

  • I dont like the way you teach no offense

  • @sexyivan19 that's cool...the world is a big place and there are lots of videos out there. Roll on!

  • @Submissions101 i do...i wanted to say thanks, cuz watching your videos whenever i get bored has helped alot (especialy since i get bored often)

  • @Submissions101 Im not trying to suck up or anything and I know its a matter of opinion but I couldn't disagree more I find your methods very effective and have found it very easy to integrate a lot of your techniques in to my arsenal. You've inspired me to continue furthering my game so thankyou very much and please keep it up.

  • @sexyivan19

The guy has some cool techniques!

  • The guy haS some cool techniques!

  • Nice one man, my triangles and arm triangles suck balls but this video should help me out alot.

  • I love how Ari apologizes before the Impaler. Classic.

  • I don't understand "Track Stance, Chimp, and Impaler" meaning.

Please teach me what meaning it is.

I can't do Arm Triangle well.

Please teach in Japanese if it is possible.

  • it is what he is doing with his legs and feet is you watch them you can get it. its basicaly saying put your feet to look like one of those like a track racer and ect.. but once u understand what he said its easy to get.

  • track has legs spread, chimp had a knee up on the stomache area, and impaler is when the knee is up to the throat. they're to get better leverage

  • i learned this move today. i do it by wrapping my hand round the guy's head like in the video. Then i grab my left bicep and my left hand pulls my head in and my head applies pressure to my choke. if it doesnt work well, keep it there, then move out to my left, impaler. The impaler can be used on the stomach, sternum and so on. I personally love the sternum because of the pain it produces.

  • Ari Bolden 4ever...

  • is the arm triangle a crank or a choke, my instructor says it's a choke but every time someone puts it on me it cranks in the back middle part of my neck, and vice versa when i tried it a couple weeks ago i messed up a guys neck (thank god it got better) and don't try it any more.... is this from incorrect technique or is it actually supposed to just crush the neck

the technique we do is similar to this but we don't pull them up on their side, i'll try this though thanks

  • Honestly a bit of both. Though in competition or MMA you're most likely not gonna make a guy tap from the "cranking part". People get put to sleep all the time from this technique, so it's definitley a choke. The goal is to cut off both of the coratid arteries in the neck, one with your bicep and forearm and one with the pressure from their arm against the neck (due to your head, squeeze, and angle)

  • Its a choke your suppose to feel on both sides of the neck, you probably did some aggressive movement just think like an anaconda(if that makes sense), just squeeze until its over don't beast just gradually add pressure.

I go to the Renzo Gracie Academy in New York and if your gi is too dirty or your just not clean you get sent out the class. Skin Infections are no joke.

  • MRSA is nasty, and anyone who doesn't keep clean needs to stay out of the dojo.

  • i believe it is a choke, i could be wrong. but the arm triangle in BJJ is a choke. while im a judo fighter as well. we have a very similar move that is actually a crank. but its slightly different

  • @T0KIWARTOOTH whats it called?

  • kata gatame or the "hell hold" in judo it is a submissive hold, but i have tapped people out with it. ya know?

  • This confuses a lot of people, but its actually because most white belts don't know what they are doing 'wrong' with it. When you have your right arm around the head (for example), if you lock it in by puting your left hand up by your own head, then this is a choke. If you put your left hand on HIS head, then it will turn into a crank. The crank is his head staying stationary while his neck coems towards you, this wont happen if you dont put your hand on his head. Hope that helps

  • head grab and reverse, knee pass to half gard and reverse(stu106)

  • ahahahaha listen to him talking at 3:25 when he was getting choked, its so funny

  • good tips thx.

  • A response to stu: you don't sweep per say when your "escaping" mount, it's an escape or "reversal"

one good way is the hip escape, trapping one leg then , bringing the knee through on the other side to regain full guard

look up mount escapes I'm sure you'll find it.

  • Yeah I know, but this other guy was talking about getting "sweeped" from mount. Just improper termonology I'm assuming.

  • sweep*

  • Is the Arm Triangle Choke a vascular choke?

  • yup

  • good but not effective becouse it is very easy for this guy to got sweaped before he sub him.

  • who's getting swept? The guy on top is in no danger of getting swept unless he really sucks.

  • how do you swerp sombody who has you mounted?

  • I like that impaler variation, gonna have to give that a try next time I roll.

And I'm with the guys above.

I always rock a long sleeve rashguard and gi pants, and I'm fanatical about keeping it clean.

Got 5 sets so far, so even if the washer breaks or something, I still have clean gear to train in.

    Tip:

If you have people who aren't too particular about hygiene, print out some pictures of bad staph infections and post them up in the lockerrooms, they'll RUN for the detergent.

  • that wouldnt be a problem as long as i keep my own hygiene at a decent level right?

  • I've seen too many people with skin infections to roll on dirty mats or with people who don't wash their gear.

    Not worth it.

The suggestion about posting pics of staph was obviously facetious, but if you have people who show up in dirty gear, if people aren't washing the mats, etc, talk to them.

The way I see it, every time you get on the mats it's your responsibility to make sure you don't injure your partner, and good hygiene is as much part of that as not jerking their joints of out socket.

  • I like to finish by hopping off into side mount... more stable, less likely to get countered, and you can really drive your shoulder into their arm if you need it.

BTW, I got your badge in UFC 2009. =)

  • Thanks for your input! What do you mean you got our badge in UFC 2009? Don't have the game lol.

  • Great video! I have had problems in the past with finishing the arm triangle, now i'll just impale them! haha

I got the badge too! In the career mode of the game you can bring in guest trainers and one of them is Eddy Bravo. If you train with him enough you get to put the 10th planet logo on your fight shorts.

  • If you do 5 martial arts seminars with 7th Planet, you get a badge that you can sew onto your shorts in the game. =)

The rendering of Eddie Bravo in the game is not too bad, really.

  • ^7th^10th

  • actually i think its more likely to get countered if you lose the full mount, the opponent will try to hug is own leg with the trapped arm and the use his leg power to counter the presure on his neck ( at least thats what happens to me with my trainig partner... i have to tap him from full mount or change to arm bar or something else.

Tips are welcome, cause as u can see I'm pretty new to this

  • personaly I would just go into my master key sub move and that would be the end.

  • Wouldnt you just be able to buck and roll as soon as that arm is trapped under the neck and wind up on top in his guard?

  • from where? knee on belly ?

  • if he was mounted you might be able to buck and roll if they aren't properly balanced but you'd still be caught in the choke but from guard position

  • that's what i was thinking. but from what i can tell. the guy that has mount is too far up for the bottom guy to trap his feet. that's the key to rolling them over, trap the feet.

    who knows. good point

  • it can also be finished from guard.

  • and if you roll and he rolls with you you could both be caught belly up again and it will be sort of an anaconda right?

  • If he tries to roll not that easy but I would really Let him then I would take his back and then he is in far Worse position.

  • You are absolutely right! He's not resisting.

  • i like how u guys completely cover up while training unlike on tuf where they train without their shirts which just causes diseases from sweaty arm pits on peoples faces

  • I agree... Sometimes a grappling partner will not be covered well and it gets so gross I start making mistakes because I just get disgusted and frustrated with it.

  • i wouldnt roll with anyone that wasnt covered

  • I have come to that point too... I accept shorts, as a matter of fact, just for conveniance I wear fight shorts much of the time myself, but torso is a must as far as covering goes.

  • As long as everyone has good hygene that shouldn't be a problem. what pisses me off is people that obviously never shower or wash their gi.

  • nothing like being caught in a triangle by somebody who thinks 'it will get dirty anyway' my shit gets washed every time i train

  • Ari, these vids inspired me to take judo! thanks so much.

  • thought this was BJJ?

  • It is he just kinda does his own set of moves which are in BJJ and calls it his own style.

  • my favorite choke. thx ari you've taught me so much

  • Sic intro sick vids keep it up once i get the cash im buying some 10th planet vids

  • Idaho isn't about potatoes anymore..

You guys are doing a great job..

  • Man you guys ROCK!!

  • i just got the gracie combatives dvds..... its the one sub that isnt on it... i think everyone in the military and protective services should know....

i do jap jitz and its my senseis fav choke :D i love it also

ps ari where are u in this?

  • This was taken at Keith Owen's BJJ school in Boise Idaho

  • love it !!! much thanks!!!!!!!

  • Good vid. I usually try to attempt this when ever i can but it can get a little tricky. I have that same Hayabusa rashguard lol.

  • arm triangled someone last night, but i typically get it when they are in my guard

  • WOW you are CRAZY!

Take it easy on them guys 30% ? LoL

  • Arm triangle its my best choke. I love chokes in general they're a huge part of my game due to the challenges my disability presents. But the arm triangle is my favorite choke of all. I never finish my mounted like that though. I have super super tight hips so i stay on and squeeze. my favorite way to get it though is off the guard pass. You either get the choke, they roll away and you get the back(w/ your underhook in place gotta love it) or side control so all is good. Thanks Ari. good vid.

  • closer to the Judo version.

  • only if not properly done , I use to have trouble with it till I did some research on vein and artery placements from a anatomy book, the beauty of this move is it can be started standing by countering a hay maker or a undisciplined punch, with this choke position combined with a basic judo toss and finish off with this sleeper , classic combo

  • It does suck when you are on the receiving end of it. I choked someone out with it the other day. The guy blacked out in seconds and afterwords I asked him why he didn't tap. He responded with 'I didn't even know I was being choked'.

If done correctly it is a wicket blood choke.

  • Agreed. Arm triangle choke is a staple in jiu jitsu and mma world wide. I have to think that this comment is a 'trolling one'. The arm triangle can be seen in hundreds and hundreds on matches-proof is in the pudding.

  • Ari how was my filming was ok heh your friend Ty Hatfield

  • Ty

Thank you very much for your help! It was great spending the weekend with you! All the best!

    Your Friend

    Ari

  • i love the laugh behind the camera at 3:31 lol. and i love the arm triangle. probably the easiest submission from mount in a grappling match

  • Word...gotta love the arm triangle. I know Brandon Quick likes to gable grip, but I'm all about the hand on the biceps like this. It seems to sink deeper for me but maybe it's because I'm a lighter guy. Any thoughts about which is better in different situations?

  • He likes to gable grip on the reverse arm triangle i think he does it this way when he is doing a normal arm triangle

  • Ok right on, yeah I'll watch the dvds again, maybe it is just for the RATs, though I like to go for the biceps on those ones too. It just always seems tighter

  • love the head and arm choke! great tips-- thanks for the post, ari.

  • This guy is great

  • arm triangles are sick, and nice new intro guys haha

  • thanks again for posting more stuff on arm triangles

  • and i was going to move to idaho...i could have been at this seminar >.> nice video btw

  • u guys ready for naga this year?

  • There are several Keith Owen guys going to NAGA.

  • I want more, more mooore. Think of me like a herion addict, this is like heroin to me. Think of me as a nimfo, these videos are the equivalent to a promiscuous women. I'm a child and these vids are like sugar coated sweeties. Give me more dammit, more herion, more women, and more god dam sweeties!

  • jeez man share=)

  • Impaler... LOL Love how every laughed at that. But excellent vid as always.

  • Nice!
