@red12dirt i think that distance between what appears semi professional and expert is little now. d7000 is all we all need. go to... freedslr . com remove spaces and take an opportunity to bring home a new Nikon D7000
how come nikon nowadays make overp[riced crap? i bought my nikon analog camera almost 20 years ago and its still owrking but my nicon DSL have broken down in less tahn 3 years. I've gone thru 3 of thier DSLR crap. It seems that NIkon design their camera to be replaced every 3 years no matter how well taken care. overpriced crap
it's NOT the camera that matters. What matters is you as a photographer being in the right place freezing the right moment.A guy with a 150$ camera who shot an unexpected dramatic event is worth more than a guy with 3000$ camera who stays at home playing wii.CONSUMERIST SHEEP.
@delonge5000 Not everyone that wants to make an informed decision before spending a good amount of money on a product is a "consumerist sheep". Also, while it's true that the person matters more than the camera, having a nice camera has it's own advantages. Your idealized depiction of two people is silly and depicts reality in rare cases. Photographs are not just right place, right time. Art is usually the picture itself and not just the event depicted, which takes careful planning.
Does the D700 feel really awkward in your hands, compared to the D90? I have average size hands -- is it something I'll get used to quickly, or are ergonomics just not one of the D700's strong points, like the D300/D90? No local camera store stocks this beast, so the only way I can get one of these D700s in my hands is by renting it off the internet for $270 (which I'd like to avoid, of course). Thanks
@ragnarocking I think the D700 feels great. It is heavier than my D90 without the battery grip on it. But if you have a grip on the D90 it's almost the same. I have big hands so I bought Camera Armor for my D90 and I love it. The D700 doesn't seem to need it. A friend just got a D300s and I didn't like the feel at all compared to the other two. If the D700 is what you want I don't think you'll regret it.
thanks for the reply - I pulled the trigger on the D700 + bg last week and you're right... I don't regret it. It does feel slightly "different", though, not awkward.
The Chrome shutter button on the D90 is classy and stylish. How could anyone think flat black plastic looks better than Chrome??? I always thought they made a mistake putting the cheap, tacky plastic button on the more expensive cameras.
I own two D90's and have tried out both the D300 and the D700. I prefer the D90's handling to either of the others. Those of you looking to buy a Nikon DSLR should hold each of these in your hands a little while before you shell out up to 3 times the dough for one of the other bricks. The D700 is big and heavy. Over 50% heavier than the D90. Many people mistake heavy for Pro and light for Cheap. Try each out in a store first.
I want to upgrade from the d50 to one of these. Which one would you recommend? I do portrait and working with models and people in general. fast action aviation and sports. nature, landscape, band and general photography.
It really depends on how much you`re willing to spend. I just the D90, with a 18-200mm VR11 Lens, and I love it for about 700.00 for camera, Lens was 800.00,. The D300 is about 1,700.00, it`s weather proofed, shoots mor FPS. I couldn`t go into all the details here but for the biggest bang for your buck the D90 is a great camera. If you`re a professional I would probably do for the D300, if money is no option go for the D700...
i have the d90 and it withstands rain just fine. the d300 is just not worth it in my opinion. the quality of the image is exactly the same as d90. the d700 is only thing i would consider in the future, but im waiting for a d700x :)

there is no diffrence u hav nikon d40 or nikon d700 because if u just have lot's of money and want to ''Look like photograph'', u can't do beautiful photos.. I see that many people think, that they will do better photos with seorius nikon d700 or canon 5d..
@lybones. Same here:-)! After having done a lot of research before I bought my first DSLR, I finally decided to get the D90. Best decision I ever made...
I bought the D300s (with the Nikon 10-24mm lens) but could have stretched to the D700 body. The reason being was the lenses. I'd have needed to spend a lot more to get the full frame lenses to make full use of the D700 superb performance. My long term plan is to add full frame lenses starting with the 24-70mm f2-8 and then in a few years get the D700/800 or whatever takes it's place.
a few questions... 1.) Doesnt the d300/d300s only have the P , S , A , M,. Modes? and the only difference between the d300 and the d300s is the video right? Like the proce is the same?
I've never used a 50d but they have a higher resolution. All I know is if you're looking for a NIKON(!) then the D90 is a fantastic camera for the money. I've used one quite a bit and for £700 or whatever it is these days its fantastic. semi-pro body for entry level prices. I'm concidering getting one as a second body. oh and it has hd video remember.
The way I see it the really successor to the 40D is the 7D(even though it should be in a different category). The 50D was just an improvement on features and higher MP, but that comes at a price.Anyone one owning a 40D should not consider upgrading to a 50D.The difference in features just does not worth it.
without the battery grip the D700 shoots at 5fps, the d300s shoots at 7fps. the d300s does 720p video while the d700 is just for photos. the d300s has a cropped sensor while the d700 has a full frame one, which means u need decent quality lenses to go along with it (£1000 upwards).
Great review. I am looking to upgrade from my D50 and was torn between the D300 and the D700. I had not even considered the D90. BTW what does the "S" stand for in D300S???
hey, nice videos, i wanted to ask whether the door latch in teh d90 is a real problem? have u ever foind it to just open up wen u trying to take fotos? is it something that hiders teh overall quality of the camera like the olympus 520?
@Sh1n1ngForc3 i am planning on going FX but i gotta ask u a question i am used to the featherlight d5000 will the weight of the d700 really bother me that much?
brilliant review!! i'm currently trying to decide whether i should go for a d300 or d700. this review helps a lot in knowing its key differences. thanks :)
The D90 Video mode is made for people who are shooting stills and find something that really shoot me shot in motion. For instance if your shooting a tiger in the wild and it jump on you, the video mode might come in handy to explain your lost arm or such.
But it's not a replacement of video cameras. It's an option that you have at your hand when needed.
But it's my reason to get the D90. I have plenty of situations in which i wish I had a video camera at hand. I am a DP and a HD cam is heavy
I enjoyed this review very much. you focus on the relevant stuff that have not already been discussed in other videos. I already have the d300, so it couldn't help me, but it was quite interesting anyways to see how well the competition does. a confusing thing to me was that the aspect ratio of your videos. they are hugely distorted so that I don't even recognize the d300 as one. the camera-shift actually was quite hilarious. loved that. keep on doing great reviews. I appreciate. :)
Nikon D300 is the best! Most ergonomic, bang for your buck camera that does not fool the shooter by drowning him with all these bells and whistles! Nikon D300 is the PERFECT camera!
Thank you again for the helpful video. If you still have the D700, is it possible to do a video on its operation, e.g.: speed of focus on moving objects such as children, how well it expose the scenes, etc.? I know it might be too much to ask but I think many people will appreciate it :) (If you could use a lens like the 50mm f1.8 that would be even more awesome!)
It's for reducing camera shake. You know... once you press the shutter buton the mirror goes up, camera have time to lose vibrations and then wait for second shutter button press to open shutter and expose sensor. It's a very good function especially with the long exposures.
nice video man.... i just bought a d90 because of the cheap price compared to the others. if have could bought a d300 or more but i really did not need it.... thanks for your video.
its a good choice if you don't need the 6 fps and want a slightly better low light high ISO performance. The autofocus may not have 51 points but it still beats some of Canon's high end focusing systems.
Thank you very much for this swell explanation. I have a D90 and am in the process of learning about Nikons. Your clear and concise help was great; now I'm going to your Part II.....Tome
The D90 is a huge improvement when compared to the D80. In fact it has slightly better high ISO performance when compared with the more expensive D300 (although its very hard to tell). Definitely shell out the extra cash for the D90 you won't regret it.
I have a D90, is real that she (a she :D my "piri") heats up, but is not that huge deal. last month i shoot a presentation 5X5minutes=24 and was litle heat.. couldnt tell the diference if it was my hand sweting or the camera...for me not an issue i think its a good camera comparing features vs price
The D90 CMOS sensor heats up when it is exposed and processing that much info and light for an extended period and so must shut down after 5 minutes of continuous filming. It is not a file size limitation or anything like that although you must have the appropriate amount of memory.
is there anyway we could mod or get an adapter for the D300 eyepiece view finder to look exactly like the D700 !

At first I was going to get the D300, but after lengthy research the D700 seems like the more sensible plan.
D300 noise is a fair bit worse than the D700.
Only thing I wish the D700 had is dual SD/CF slot.
Video mode? Who cares, just buy a Kodak Zi6 for £70, which shoots 720p and better sound quality than the D300s.
Also the fact the D700 actually has the exact same image quality as the D3x for 1/3 the price is great.
wiggyster 2 years ago
D3x has twice the resolution. and the advantage of having video on a dslr is the fact that u can shoot video with different lenses etc.
DemonicGenocide 2 years ago
Twice the resolution, but a stupidly small ISO range, and slow FPS. Unless you're printing HUGE photos, virtually every week it's un-needed.
Nikon D-SLR's still suck at video, jello effect is overwhelming and the built in microphones suck.
A ~£300 dedicated camcorder will be full HD, 70x optical zoom plus have built in 80+GB HDD.
Video on D-SLRs is still a gimmick, but admittedly okay for capturing the odd moment.
wiggyster 2 years ago
you're forgetting the fact that DSLR video still has one big advantage... the lenses.

I know it might be too much to ask but I think many people will appreciate it :) (If you could use a lens like the 50mm f1.8 that would be even more awesome!)

Great videos man. I'm a huge fan of Nikon and I would have to say I'm very impressed with the D90. Such a great camera for it's size.

What exactly does the mirror lockup function for? Beside cleaning the sensor. Thanks.

The autofocus may not have 51 points but it still beats some of Canon's high end focusing systems.

unless you need the durability the d90 i would say being a d300 owner is a better camera overall

Thank you very much for this swell explanation. I have a D90 and am in the process of learning about Nikons. Your clear and concise help was great; now I'm going to your Part II.....Tome

is it worth buying the d90 over the d80?
mavrockk7 3 years ago
The D90 is a huge improvement when compared to the D80. In fact it has slightly better high ISO performance when compared with the more expensive D300 (although its very hard to tell). Definitely shell out the extra cash for the D90 you won't regret it.

i have to agree with u sh1n1ngforc3. i have held the three cameras and when it comes to handling i am most comfortable with the d300. nice vid bro

I have a D90, is real that she (a she :D my "piri") heats up, but is not that huge deal. last month i shoot a presentation 5X5minutes=24 and was litle heat.. couldnt tell the diference if it was my hand sweting or the camera...for me not an issue i think its a good camera comparing features vs price
pedrojorgeclaro 3 years ago
The D90 CMOS sensor heats up when it is exposed and processing that much info and light for an extended period and so must shut down after 5 minutes of continuous filming. It is not a file size limitation or anything like that although you must have the appropriate amount of memory.

Why do you only get to shoot 5 minutes of hd video? im sorry if this is a dumb question but id like to know...
