"subtle whoring" is another way of expressing "free love" or "promiscuity", hence the following phrase "that costs too much to be free". ;)

The song is quite pretty, but it is much more meaningful and has more depth when sung in first person (like the original by Charlene) rather than 3rd person, like here. Here it comes off as more "preachy" and judgmental.
