It's really bugging me that Tommy got cut off before he could do whatever it was he wanted to do with that bottle of wine. He looks genuinely confused and upset at the end! What was he going to do?!??!?
Because Tommy still didn't trust CBS after all those years; he KNEW, in 1988, that if he and the writers had inserted just ONE "offensive" joke concerning President Reagan or the Republican Party in general, it would have been censored, and the whole issue of censorship and "free speech" would have started in again, and probably would have kept the Brothers off TV for good- and he was right. If CBS could silence him at 5:33, they certainly would have done it over 20 years ago...
fromthesidelines, No question about it. Tommy Smothers was right! Thanks for sharing that. I feel that now more than ever we need to hear what's really going on!
I do think he close to correct. I don't even like Jay anymore. And Conan has always driven me nuts with his self-debasement. Daivd just seems to not be creative and I've never liked the band. Paul is a 'yes" man. I rarely watch any but Craig is OK if he'd leave the gay jokes off. He's always up. I agree with the bandages cencorship. She wore extreem clothes enough but it was family tv and she didn't have the right to show off those. Why would that be important for her to do?Silly.
Being younger, I knew these guys mostly from The Smothers Brothers Show that was made in 1975, without a lot of the social commentary of the original show. Now I've sort of rediscovered them and have an even greater appreciation. They're still incredibly funny and relevant!
I'm not surprised, 'josedaplumb'. CBS is still leery about what people say on their network (especially during the current Bush administration)- when the network wanted Tom & Dick to be as agressive about topical humor as they were on their original series, for their 1988-'89 revival, they politely declined. And I KNOW why...
Did anyone notice the bad edit at 5:33?I was a member in the audience and they totally chopped out a chunk of what Tom Smothers said.He called USA a fascist country.Said this is the worst he has ever seen this country in his 72 years of life.Said when the corporations own the media and the government, that by definition is a fascist country. He named the Dixie Chicks example of celebs afraid to speak out for fear of losing their careers.Case and point of fascism was CBS editing this out.Shame CBS
Tommy Smothers is looking like Johnny Carson these days. What a great team. They don't make them like this anymore. They've still got the genius of timing, wit, depth of critical awareness, absolute graciousness and wonderful uniqueness.
It's true the Smothers Brothers are getting old, but that's what happens when you don't die young! They look FANTASTIC and they are as smart as ever. I won't mind being 70 if I have my wits about me like they do. Great to see them with Craig, my favorite late night host.
To be complimented by the Smothers Brothers and compared to Carson. Dang!

I really hope Craig's kidding about "problems with CBS" since he says that a lot.
