FIrst world cup i remember. watching kempes, passarella, arie haan and then after replicating the games in the field next to our house. fantastic memories.
flippin great ..... me and my best mate wrecked our parents lawns playing football that year, so exciting, now they play computer games and are fat and rude to their parent s and teacher.s, so not all progression is good...x..
Me also,i was 12 years old and it was such a lovely build up to this world cup,Scotland were not as bad as everyone say's,remember they only went out on goal difference and lost only 1 match,great memories indeed???
Fantastic 78 world cup argentine melody loved every moment, kempes, luque and paseralla late night football ticker tape we want our money back and san Jose,
@tamnaharrie I can recvall one thing from those days Pro players who were not spoilt as now pl;ayers like Ardiles Kempes passarella all the Dutch players France Bettega Rossi and many more who ran and ran covering every blade of grass, and entertained you! Not like boring stuff now settle it with Penalties UUGGHH!
I've still got this as the vinyl single somewhere! One of my favourite sporting themes. I don't expect the 2010 world cup theme can possibly be as memorable!
Yes, Holland and Brazil were both mugged in that World Cup. Should have been Brazil vs Holland or Italy in final. I think FIFA changed the later group stages to knockout after this world cup.
Great tune. But I was a Holland fan - still am actually, despite being English. Nederland CHEATED out of that World Cup, at least in 74 you can say Sepp Maier played well and Germany were determined defenders, but in 78, Holland ruled that final, Argentina just cheated all the way through. DAMN THAT GOALPOST!
@SeventiesMania SO glad to hear of another English Oranje fan! All my work colleagues are wearing their England shirts to the office tomorrow to mark the start of the WC, so I will proudly wear my orange!!
We were robbed in '78, the junta made sure their team won the tournament. Top theme tune though, hearing it now for the first time in 32 years - special.
@tranmere66 Great!... well, I still support England but just *love* the Dutch style of voetbal and the fans! Johnny Rep was the coolest man on the planet in 1978: I remember cheering loudly when he scored against Scotland, offending our elderly neighbours, who wanted the 'British team'. In 98 I nearly put my head through my ceiling when Dennis Bergkamp scored against the Argies :-) Sadly, I have to work on Monday afternoon, but will wear an orange tie, just like Prince Willem-Alexander's ;-)
my memory was Brazil having to play on a "cut up" Mar del plata pitch (some say the groundsmen applied salt water all over it....on instruction) and Brazil came alive later but did not make it. The best team did not win, that was Italy, who beat the winners on the way.
we wore all the grass out in my garden that summer, and the park and the fields..nearly every kid played football and was slim in them days...magic !!
For those people who have come here on-the-back of the Argent vrs Kiss debate re. 'God Gave Rock and Roll To You', here's a bit of pure nostalgia ...by Rod Argent himself no less, in 1978 and adapted for BBC coverage-programmes of matches that summer. Ahh... the joys of doing A-level final-exams when a world cup was on... I think not. Great little tune.
This was by Rod Argent, under the name of Rodriguez Argentino or something. And it featured either Andrew or Julian Lloyd Webber. It was performed on Top of The Pops at the time and has been shown on TOTP2.
Pretty much the first World Cup I can vividly remember. This fantastic tune brings loads of good memories back and is the one that really stands out in my mind as being associated with the BBC world cup programme of 1978.
watch England will win it again by The Cloned great video,very clever !, brilliant sing a long tune! FANTASTIC ENGLAND SONG

@marcusantonius90 Me too, I watched parts of 1970 and 1974 but this was the first one where I saw most of the games.

Didn't someone get sent home in disgrace during this one?I have vague memories of a scandal but I was only 10 at the time.

@123rickyt That would be Willie Johnstone, in a weird drug scandal. He never played for Scotland again.

I was also 7 years old in 1978 and this is the 1st World Cup I can remember (though, barely).
* Archie Gemmill's goal
* Cuba beating Scotland
* Argentina winning the final
capricious71 2 years ago 2
@capricious71 PERU beating scotland
Italy beating the winners
Brazil playing on a crap pitch at Mar del plata (Argentina "doctored" pitch)
Peru getting paid off
Clive thomas blowing whistle while ball in the air
France scoring against Italy in first minute of game
Argentina held up final and then moaning about dutch players plaster caste on arm, (which he had all tournement)
