Even in Malay culture, there r still traces of Hindu or Indian cultural influences (though not as much as the Javanese) - these r more for cultural reasons. Eg brides & grooms r still blessed by their parents with their foreheads & palms of their hands & they still greet d kings with their palms placed together in front of their faces. Btw, God knows us best - He's d one judging us - in Islam, it's your intentions that is important when u're doing something - including doing this. Btw good work
jatayu is an incarnation of garuda. nothing wrong in depicting jatayu as garuda. btw jatayu is not killed in ramayana but his feathers just chopped. my knowledge is thru indian ramayana :) indonesian may be slightly different.
I tried very hard to make no mistakes in explaining this beautiful, dramatic ballet. Every caption was checked by the tour leaders for accuracy. My words were limited to parts of the story clearly described in writing, exactly what I saw on stage, filmed, and could understand. Hopefully I got it right for this specific presentation on Java, a highlight of the entire trip.
Javanese culture is deeply rooted in Hinduism, Buddhism and older traditions. Islam is only a later vaneer. Most javanese are Kejawan few are so called santri (pure muslims stripped of the beauty of Indonesian cultural development).
There 600,000 Tengger Hindus living around Mnt Bromo in East Java. There are also a few Javanese hindus.
We (Javanese) know, that it should be Jatayu. Garuda is in another story (and we have statue of Wisnu [Visynu] riding Garuda). Intrepberkexplorer just sloppy. Just because our national symbol is Garuda, he assumed the bird character was also Garuda.
Most Javanese are Muslim or Kejawen (Ancient belief). Only an isolated society in Tengger (East Java) are still Hindu. But we (both Muslim and Kejawen) preserved Ramayana story.

99% indonesians still read ramayana and mahabharat.
They clearly said that "ISLAM IS THEIR RELIGION AND RAMAYANA IS THEIR CULTURE."

The villian in the Ramayana is Ravana. Ravana kills Jatayu not Garuda.
