When I do this it only displays my iPod screen for a sec or two then shuts off and says that the cable doesn't support my iPod, anyone know what I can do to fix this?

Thank you I got one for 3g iPod it told me it works on any ios than I put it on my iPod it told me it doesn't support my device any clue do I have to jailbreak it it's on a 3.1.1 ios
