Let's see, an Arab woman changed the face of the automobile industry, space, medicine and construction. Too bad SHE'S NOT ALLOWED TO DRIVE TO WORK!?!?!? This just goes to prove the potential to which ALL people can excel if given the chance.
@jessica5666 it realy is not that extraordinary, even from an engineering perspective. Changing the structure of objects in a macroscopic scale is what we have been doing for centuries, ever since people started metal foundries... what we should realy be focusing on is manipulating objects at a much smaller scale. Being able to efficiently form allotropic compounds like carbon nanotubes from the elements outside of lab conditions would do for a start...
she casts it with alum spears then heats it up and alum melts out makeing nice clean uniform holes thu the metal
and car frames and such have to be ridged and such and bumpers soak up force due to theres a piston behind them sucking up the force bumper is just for looks
I think they should have been clearer on the fact that that this new metal foam was not strong through rigidity, but rather through elasticity. I worked it out thanks to the talk about bulletproof vests and bumpers. Honestly, you can't compare this material to steel or aluminum very well, they have completely different uses.
@ivanmeili Sure it did. But a hint is different from flat-out saying it, which they should have done considering they spent a lot of the video (probably due to editing) implying the opposite.
On top of that, I think there's at least one horrible analogy per video with scientists because they're trying so hard to dumb it down, and then the analogy doesn't fit. This could easily have been that analogy, it just wasn't - in fact, it was the most apt analogy in the whole video. :)

@KrissWalterKovacs
dont buy junk and most cars can take a 15-20mph blow w/o any real damage ..my dts took a large hit from a envoy w/o damage
but foam bumper wont stop any shock w/o a piston holding it in place
m0zone 1 year ago
okay then put pistons to hold it.
but thats not the point.
"prototypes" at first aren't user-friendly.
