i bought the fake one and i knew it was a fake and it was obvious when a looked at it, but it sounds a lot better than the original mic of my Canon T3i. For $5, i had nothing to lose. I don't wanted to pay more for the use i will make of it.

The band has an EXTREAMLY poor sound system ...WAY BASSY an mutted . Under normal situations The fake sounds better..fuller and richer.. the Real Sony sounds thin and tinny  on voice or normal situations.

I also bought a ps3 dual shock control thinking it was the real one and it came out to be a fake one! I thought it was real because it looks just like the original and it had the Sony brand on the control but when I received it and opened it (which by the way even the packaging looked exactly like an authentic one) it felt really different than from the original one it felt heavier and harder so I decided to open it up to see the parts and everything was like really cheap material the battery,

In France the "real" Sony mike costs about 10 times the price of the fake one (on eBay for ex). The true question is: is such a price difference worth with regard to the respecive audio quality???

Anyway I get both left and right channels just fine when I don't have it plugged in but when I use the mic with and without the adapter I only get the left channel. Any idea what could be the problem? I know you can go back in an editor and fix that but it shouldn't be that way.

most electret elements will yield 20khz response down to well below human audible. the material and physical construction is obvious, as the sony original actually looks like the mold production people were paid to work, but the fakes look like some guy scraped the mold with an xacto knife and sandpapered the finish. the parts fit is poor on the fake, the printing is sloppy and the raised lettering is easier to read on the true sony. my 'fake' i bought performs just as good as the 'real mcoy'.

I gotta say this is a great informative video, just the reason why you tube was created. I got the bootleg and it works fantastic. Don't knock it before you spend $70+ on the real mccoy! The sony Dictaphone digital unit I have has bad low end response and the bootleg mic has increased bass sensitivity so I actually recommend it and I only paid $5!

I actually got my Zi8 to do music videos (liked the ext mic opt) so I bought the Audio-Technica Pro24 Stereo mic. You'll spend a bit more for it tho - about $70 US. But with the level control on the camera, it's very good for recording both solo & live performance.

You will need an extension cable for that, but they are pretty cheap & good to have.

You can get a 6 foot 1/4 inch (3.5mm) cable for about 2 bucks.

The fake market seems to be huge. I bought an earphone/mic combo from some random vendor on eBay for my Sony Ericsson cellphone for about $5. It didn't work.

Bought the genuine article direct from Sony. It worked. I compared the two, including packaging, and there was no noticeable difference. It was only when you plugged the fake in that you knew it was fake because the phone didn't recognize it.

Anyone else notice the packaging on the fakes? It seems that if they come in those sealed "chip" bags, they're fake. I've never seen fakes in retail packaging. It also seems that once the price gets under about $30, it's pretty clear that it's not genuine.

If you want to see a guide for upgrading the fake mic, check the video posted by 'fishycomics' - he uses a bedford tech mic replacement.

As for finding the real thing for cheap, just shop around. I actually got my real mic off of ebay. I asked the seller plenty of questions before bidding and also made sure the picture in the auction was of the mic I'd be getting. A lot of sellers show a real mic and send a fake. Real mic was bought for approx. $25 on ebay. Fake one was purchased on Amazon Marketplace. "real" mic comes with cable and removeable lapel clip. Note: real cable has "Sony" embossed on it.

Great informative video!!! Sorry to say that I too was an idiot by purchasing the fake version on Ebay. But thanks to this video I determined mine was a fake an opened up a case on Ebay. Subsequently I received a full refund. Now that I'm stuck with the fake, I want to know if you can share with us what $20 inner replacements are you referring to (to improve sound quality)? Thinking about buying the "REAL" version if that doesn't work. Thank you!
