Fighting militarism is probably one of the primary reasons that we showed up for the RNC.
Can you tell me which book/lecture that chomsky quote comes from? Because I also remember him saying that the U.S. is the seat of global economic power, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the entire U.S. population is privileged, and that huge segments of the population don't live in dire poverty.
I honestly cannot tell you where specifically to find that position of his (it is not a DIRECT quote), though I do remember it was in a response to 9/11 and the truth movement.
I would also have to fervently disagree with you and say the entire U.S. population is tremendously privileged. I get plenty annoyed when I go to some place like China and encounter subjectificaiton as the Rich American White Guy, however disadvantaged I consider myself. But the point remains, our poverty doesn't hold
a candle to the poverty experienced by the majority of the world population, and that is something we need to acknowledge. Fighting that reality is pretty much akin to white folks, fighting anti-racist oppression activists of color, who say "Well, there is racism against whites too you know!" -- The point has truth, but it detracts from the largest most systemic issue at hand.
Finally, surely anti-militarism was a central facet of the RNC actions. I am simply speaking to the overarching "police state" narrative oozing from the video and the majority oft he comments here. It's hardly ever done from INSIDE activist circles, and that's unfortunate.
A lot of folks commenting need to seriously step out of their back yards for some much needed perspective. Please go live under one of the many existing authoritarian regimes before using similar rhetoric about your absurdly (usually white-) privileged situation. I guarantee you will come to a number of beneficial realizations. Stay radical, but at least NUANCE your perception and let it inform your thoughts and actions
Maybe you understand we have "more rights", but it honestly seems like you don't have any idea how far away the US situation is from something like North Korea. What you said is really like saying "Oh fuck I'm itchy I need to get checked for leprosy, don't want to wait until it's too late". There's a good point that Chomsky has made before: "Why expend all of that energy fighting for the most privileged populations in the world?" Fight to reign in militarism, the police the world can feel

I understand we have more rights than others, but it shouldn't have to be fucking North Korea before we do something.

seconded, because once we do get to that point it'll be much more difficult to do anything about it.

so inspiring
the public needs to know the evils of this world, through the eyes of the journalist.
its disgraceful what the police did to the journalists.
