I dont know about anyone else but when ever i listen to this now , i always think of that"CRACKER" episode on tv when the woman chains her ex boyfriend to a bed then plugs a lead in and electrocutes him. Gruesome. Beautiful record though.
You are the greatest Dusty. You went to music heaven when you weren't supposed to but at least we can see you and listen to this classic song until we meet again. Many thanks.
Actually she spoke in several interviews that she often felt conflicted in her pop image presentation as a perfectly heterosexual woman because she knew "i could just as easily fall for a woman as i could a man." I forgot which interview that quote was from but i never forgot it. She was openly bi towards the end of her career and life.
what a voice today's singer are all shouting for some reason they can learn alot from watching this, she has a very well controlled voice absolutely brilliant.
A white woman had the best voice. And the best (ammount) songs of any female performer. Her greatest hits cd is 24 tracks full and still not complete.
How I love this song! The very first record I ever bought, and still one of my favorites! One of the best songs ever! RIP, Dusty, You always will be remembered!
I heard Elvis Costello once say that try as he might, he's NEVER been able to replicate the fantastic sound of the piano in this song, probably produced by Ivor Raymond? As for Dusty, well there's simply never been anyone like her and the world lost a lot of love and laughter and of course music, when we lost her. God bless, Dusty.

This was such a fantastic singer...and this song is giving me wet eyes. Her voice is fabulous and so soft and sexy (is that the proper description?). Maybe sensual and strong would be the right description.
Love this song and I love Dusty. It does tickle me how she can't keep her hands still while singing. Watch any video of her and they're moving along with the song. Sort of like an extention of herself to add a little drama to the performance.
when i was eight i knew it was a special era for music - just wished back then i had been ten years older. i had the 70s which were good - but the 60s were exceptional... you can't follow an exception. today's music - half-written cliche'd predictable chorus-based dross......
Her best by a fair distance - packs a massive steel punch in a velvet glove - "I close my eyes and count to ten and when I open them you're still there." - We've all been there !!
Plutootje posted a live version from 1968 elsewhere in YT, and this very beautiful and dramatic song simply doesn't come off. Whether on vinyl or CD, it's a very studio record and I think it should stay that way. So also never, never any cover versions, pleaze.
This single just knocked me out when I first heard it. She was doing all sorts of fabulous records then (I well remember the album "See All Her Faces," which was a treasure trove. She thought of herself as a very plain girl and was determined to successfully transform herself physically to match the musical talent she fully knew she possessed. And look at her! Gorgeous! A very very bright woman who basically produced all her own big hits despite what the label said!
The limited recording technology copressed the dynamic and frequency range which, in my opinion, added to the track. Vinyl LPs usually sound better than CDs if played on a decent (usually European) turntable - the sound tends to "ooze" out of the speakers in a more natural way...
True. I've got a (mono) 45 of this track from '68 and it sounds far better than the CD recording - played on an original Thorens (German) turntable through BBC monitors.
wish i could close my eyes and you were still here dusty but you will never leave us all i need to do is listen to your music and your wonderful voice and you are still "HERE" r.i.p.
Reminds me of my trip to Australia while in the Navy back in 2000 onboard the USS Hewitt, I would sneak my CD player in my coat on my lookout watch and listen to Dusty and especially this tune, ah her beautiful voice the soundtrack to the picturesque view of the sunrise/sunset out on the Pacific ocean so memorable!
It sounds so beautiful the way you explain this.. And to listen to Dusty while in nature makes the experience become even more alive. Thanks for sharing this. It sounds amazing! I'm going to listen to Dusty when we go to the shore and watch the sunrise and sunset or even just while sitting on the beach. I Love music and the shore. Especially Dusty's music! Thanks for the idea. *)*
Aside from the fantastic vocal (unequalled today), this is a spectacular arrangement and production, too. Is this one of Phil Spector's? Or maybe Jack Nitzsche without Phil?
No, but Dusty was influenced by the Spector 'wall of sound'. This song was recorded at Chappell Studios, London, in 1968. Her recording manager at Philips throughout the 60s was Johnny Franz, but Dusty later said that she produced and arranged most of her own records as she knew exactly what sounds she wanted. She recorded this vocal with a hand mike at 6am in the ladies loos (better ambience than the studio) to a round of applause from the cleaning ladies! Incredible artist.
Thank you so much, Nicklas --- that is a *great* story, with lots of detail (I'm almost as interested in production as I am in music, itself). I'm not surprised (though I am tickled, of course!) to hear that Dusty recorded the vocal in the bathroom. Before the days of digital "virtual rooms", there was a lot of that going on --- if I remember right, the guitar solo on Led Zep's "Heartbreaker" was recorded in a big shower-stall, for the quick "slap-back" echo it provided :-).
I don't recall this song back then, maybe it wasn't released in the US. Maybe it's time to reissue or someone else cover it...just don't screw it up and turn it into a gospel song.

Damn. Someone's a bit uptight, eh? I haven't been in a closet in decades and thought, for someone your age, you'd be a bit open-minded.
Minds are like parachutes and don't work very well when they don't open. But that's your loss. I'm done here.

I thought the idea here was to comment on the music, not carry on immaturely,as you are.I have said nothing to inspire such vitriol.I`m sorry, you`ve obviously been the victim of something nasty.Oh,by the way,I`ve been winding you up!

Ha! I've been winding YOU up, Dude! You are like the gayest thing on here! And I'm so glad we both lurv us some Dusty! That's one more thing we have in common! I just hope you get the help you need, y'know, before it's too late. Bye now - I'm counting to 10....

COME ON FOLKS
Never mind Dusty's private life. She was an iconic English Rose with a remarkable voice that could move you to tears. Look who we have now... Amy Crack House...

This song was written by the late CLIVE WESTLAKE, a wonderful song writer, regretably no longer with us.

why would it matter that she was gay?She was still the same person and without doubt the best british female singer EVER!!
In this day and age people should not have a problem with peoples sexuality, unless they got something to hide!

Yes she was gay, but was does it matter. If you loved her it shouldn't matter to you.
theresacoots 4 years ago 3
Besides, what makes you think she'd
even look at you, "stud"? (seriously. just kidding).
Nothin' like a little Dusty!

When I said I loved her I was referring to her music not her self.Who she batted for was her choice obviously.Bit of a waste though!
